Title: Miyamoto Working On Mystery Original Title

Pikmin 3 is also mentioned as one of the titles being worked on.

Shigeru Miyamoto is working on an unnannounced, original title, the designer confirmed in an interview with Zoomin Games.

In the interview, Miyamoto talks about the legacy he has at Nintendo, explaining that many of the developers behind Super Mario 3D Land were once kids that grew up playing Mario games.

Near the end of the interview, it is confirmed that Miyamoto is working on several titles, including Pikmin 3 for the Wii U, Luigi's Mansion 2 for the 3DS and an undisclosed original title. The report doesn't mention which system is the game for.

Sure hope this new game is character based with some big adventure. Though i'm betting he is trying to pull a new Wii Sports/Nintendogs.

Unfortunately I agree with Caterkiller.  I want a character based adventure but Miyamoto isn't into that sort of thing these days.  He's getting old and it shows in the projects he gets excited about.  I expect something laidback, non-threatening and casual because he's pushing 60 and it fits his age.  He made his exciting adventures like Mario and Zelda in his 30's.  In his 50's he made a puppy simulator and an exercise game.  It's no different than how my Dad went from a Led Zeppelin fan to a Celine Dion fan as he passed middle age.  You go from wanting thrills and adventure to wanting routine and comfort.  Wii Fit and Nintendogs are routine comfort kind of games and, what a shock, they're incredibly popular with people over 45.  Unfortunately I'm 30 years younger than Miyamoto and still want thrilling adventures in my videogames.  I don't expect him to be inspired to make such games at this point in his life.

Still though, if gardening can turn into Pikmin, I sure hope something else seemingly laid back can amount to some thing as awesome as that. He needs to take up martial arts, even if it's slow tai chi, that will put ideas with fighting spirit back in his system.

Pikmin 3! I don't care what it costs or what else is there, if Pikmin 3 is a launch title I am absolutely on board with the Wii U day one.

I wonder if this original game is the same type of game he was talking about a couple months back about creating a new character. Hope it doesn't turnout to be something like steel diver.

Actually, this makes absolutely perfect sense. Not just because of what Ian said about him being old and into that kind of stuff, but also because if you think about it the Wii U is going to need some epic casual title to launch with it, and probably be included with it as a bundle just like Wii Sports on the Wii. Look at how well the Wii did thanks to Wii Sports being bundled with it as a way to demonstrate it to everyone.

I'm with you and Ian that I want to see a new character adventure game, but I don't think that's going to happen if nothing else than because right now Nintendo needs to repeat the success of Wii Sports and pump out something in the same vein as that to be the casual killer app that sells the system to nongamers. If Miyamoto was the one behind the original Wii Sports, then its likely he is involved in whatever this mystery bundled game for the Wii U is as well.

The only thing is, will it be a collection of sports tech demos like Wii Sports? Or will it be assorted mini games like Wii Play? Something else? Or some combination thereof? It has to be something which has near universal appeal for it to be in line with Nintendo's strategy of targeting all demographics. This immediately rules a character adventure out, because these sorts of games have no hope of winning over nongamers. Sadly, therefore the only characters you will find in this game will be the bland personality-less Miis which you design yourself.

Maybe make a collection of the various tech demos they had at E3 last year? Some of those looked pretty fun.

I agree with others.

Wish it was a new character, but it is more likely a new "concept" instead.  Don't get me wrong, the guy is obviously the greatest genius in all of gaming ... the deity of all that is digital bliss...  but it'd be nice if he came down to Earth once in a while and breathed new life into the familiar.  Instead of simply uncovering my unknown desire to, for example, tilt my body until little spheres fall in designated holes.

Maybe once he gets all his current projects wrapped up then he will move on to making the sort of original IP we want him to make. Even though I don't care for casual nongames at all, I can certainly acknowledge it is in Nintendo's best interest to get something like that out as a launch title for the Wii U so that it can have a good chance of maintaining 1st place in marketshare. But there is no reason that should be the sole focus of Miyamoto's (or Nintendo as a whole) efforts. They should do what they need to do to get the console selling like hotcakes to nongamers, but once that's done they should go back to making actual games.

If the Wii has taught us anything, its that once you have about a dozen or so high demand casual games out and selling like crazy there isn't much need to make more. Games like Wii Play, Wii Fit, and so on keep selling strongly years after release, so one could think once the Wii U gets its own equivalents of these games it can then "coast" along on their momentum of sales without needing to keep pumping out sequels to them all the time.

But traditional games I think are a different story. That's something that you could and should never stop working on. If you're making a casual sports game theres only so much you can do with a baseball or tennis game with Miis, so there's no need to keep doing it. But character adventures have unlimited potential. You will never hit a wall where you can't develop a new type of character or world for that character to adventure in.

I agree with Chozo about the Wii U needing some epic casual title to sell the system with the crowd that ate up Wii Sports.  Though I would like it if it was a title that was truly for everyone and didn't come across as strictly a casual title.  Tetris had the same sort of casual appeal that Wii Sports had but it wasn't a compromised or dumbed down game at all.  Tetris wasn't really a casual game, it was just a game that had gameplay that had enough universal appeal that people who didn't normally play games also loved it.  Recently Guitar Hero/Rock Band was the same thing.  Casuals loved those but they were not specifically designed for a casual audience.  They were just games.

What always bothered me about Wii Sports is that is specifically designed to be casual.  It's calculated and intentional.  They went with really simple graphics and provided few options.  The gameplay is intentionally simplified.  No fielding in baseball.  No moving in tennis.  They didn't set out to make a motion controlled sports game and it happened to have casual appeal.  No, this was alwasy meant to be a casual title.  That's lame.  I would prefer if Nintendo targetted casuals with more "universal" games where it's just a normal game that has the same amount of complexity and depth as any normal title but casuals love it too.

That's hard to pull off but it would be so much better than this "this game is for you guys and this game is for those guys" method Nintendo has been doing.
