Title: NWR Mario Kart T.T. Records
Post by: Caterkiller on January 03, 2012, 04:49:55 PM
Without almost any internet for the last 2 weeks I kept busy with Time Trails in Mario Kart. I think we should have a dedicated thread to all of our records. As people post I will update it.

Most importantly though I want to learn from other people in how to get those insane times. There are some outrageous times I feel like I could get close to but then there are still others in which I am not sure they did legit. I don't think think my times are that fast but if you feel that I cheated trust me it was a lot of trial and error.

sh*t man, you got me beat by around 10 seconds on all those posted times lol.  I have to look up some youtube videos to see how some of you are getting these good times.  I need to see where I'm going wrong.  I got the powersliding down but I have to admit, I'm not much of a short cut taker.  Never thought that'll cost me this many seconds though.

I'm still working on unlocking stuff so I can figure out the right kart combination so that I can cut across the grass without being affected like so many other players I see.

I always thought that's the result of them using those off road tires.  I got the sponge tires which have decent off road ratings but my speed still grinds to a halt as soon as I go on grass or any other surface.  I always thought those people were cheating when they cut across grass and the like at full speed with the only exception being if they used a mushroom at that point.  That's the only way I manage to get across at full speed.

I thought mushrooms too until I saw the guy in front of me with 3 shells circling him actual pass me by taking a small cut through the grass. I guess it's possible he did a really quick slide boost, but I wanted to believe that it must be the shoes tires.

I don't know, I'm so suspect of the things that go on during the online races.  I know lag is a big issue when it comes to distorting what you see happening on the track but there are just some ridiculous speeds some of these people hit on straitaways that it has me wondering.

EDIT:
I just looked up a few videos online, specifically this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxHOY9C5HCI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxHOY9C5HCI)
This is the best known time for Bowser's Castle at the time of that filming.  Some things I notice from that run along with a few others on youtube is that these people powerslide multiple times in one turn whereas I just do one powerslide through the inside lane of the whole turn.  Also, this person hugs the sh*t out of the race lines, almost to the point of teetering off the edge of the course.  That's some serious handling there.  I guess after seeing these videos it does make them seem more believable.  Still, I don't think I can match that level of skill though.  I also enjoy pulling off the perfect powerslide through a turn so I don't think I'll enjoy linking multiple power slides on a single turn.  It'll just seem so unnatural to me compared to one smooth slide through a tight inside turn that it'll just kill the whole vibe for me.

Damn, how does he get it to power up on the slide almost instantly?
He hit red sparks in the matter of a 1sec in some cases.

I got some practicin' to do.

I have no idea, I always tried to wiggle left and right to try and create the friction faster which sometimes it did but other times it didn't seem to do anything.  That also almost ruined some of my slides too so I stopped trying them.  Oh well, Zelda SS and the laundry list of other games that need completing will make sure I don't ever get the time to reach this level of skill though lol.

Tips from Caterkiller: (Wushu*Matt in game)

2 blue boosts < 1 red boost

Basically hold on to that boost as long as you possibly can. Sometimes you will finish a curve into a straight away with only a blue boost, though difficult keep drifting awkwardly in that straight line until it turns red.

Hug the edges!

The wider the turns the more over all time. If there is no railing, your front wheel can actually hang off the edge without losing speed. This might actually hold true for off road terrain as well, I forgot. On stages with the Red and White painted curves make sure you drive on that as it is solid ground.

Get coins ASAP!

First lap you might negate certain short cuts or other time saving curves to get coins. The more coins you get the faster the top speed. By 2nd lap try to have the majority of coins you could possibly collect for top speed. But only if getting the coins means that you will not basically throw your time out the window. Some coins are not worth it. If the ghost you are racing has the same character and set up as you but 1 coin more, it will be a constant struggle to catch up if they know what they are doing. Not every coin is worth it though.

Flying Vs Driving.
Depending on the stage, flying actually will make you lose time. Best example is that Toad circuit or GBA Bowser Castle. If there are boosts on the ground avoid the flight and go for the ground. The time you make up is huge!

As for the best car, I think for all weights the general best would that White one on the cover of Mario Kart DS. The B Dasher I think. But mix and match wheels like slick and golden to see what suits you. Still those are hard to control so maybe mushroom would fit some of you better. As far as over all speed goes the clear victors online are the set ups with major speed and weight with lesser acceleration. The heavy's have been out doing the lights by a huge margin. Still though I'm sure there are some stages or custom set ups I haven't dove into yet that make them that much more better.

If you are registered as friends, does it register your friends' times? I don't think it does which is too bad. I saw you could choose several different ghosts to race against but it would be better if you could race a friend's ghost instead of random ghosts.

Im almost certain as long as we race each other online we can race each others ghosts.

Good to hear. I've been using that one since the beginning, and hoping that my poor times weren't because of the kart. But now I know it's just me. I need to work on my drifting.

Good times, Caterkiller. Time Trial is the real single-player content of Mario Kart. You only play Grand Prix until everything's unlocked, but Time Trial is dozens of hours of fun. Over the long-term, that's always the mode I spend the most time with.

I've only had MK7 for 10 days, mind you, so there's still a long way. As such, the only time I've logged that I feel might hang with this company is 02:29:503 on WII Maple Treeway. You've probably got me beat there, but hey, that's 5 seconds quicker than the best Nintendo Staff Ghost, so I was happy.

You've given me stuff to work on, though. My times on Daisy Hills and DK Jungle are both just 2 seconds behind yours - it's on!

I should play MK7 more, but everytime I open my 3DS, I check my Swapnote and then put the 3DS away again. EVERYTIME!!

You got me beat Killer Man.

One thing I noticed when I really get into it. I start turning my head with the curves as I skid along, anyone else do that? I never did it as a kid and now I just can't help my self!

I took a few of the things suggested in here and then finally went and did the Lightning cup 150cc for the first time (I was saving the last 2 special cups for last) and got 3 stars.

CPP attached means my hands were comfortable
used the recommended kart setup
went for coins on the first lap
....computer opponents weren't even on the map during the final lap on rainbow road.
DUSTED AND DISGUSTED!! 4 perfect races :D

1 more special cup to go and then a few cups where I need to get atleast 2 stars

Checking in with some of my times. Most of them are unimproved, none of them are close to bleeding edge, but most beat a dev time. Up date it in the OP when you get the chance caterkiller.

Awesome! Can't wait to see more people pile in!

One more tip about starting line boosting. There are at least 3 speeds. Fast, Faster and Fastest. When the 2 stops spinning hold as soon as possible. You know your close when you constantly mess up and skid the ground.

I know you guys will smoke this time but

SNES Rainbow Road - 1:25.364

I should have had atleast a 1-2 seconds faster but I almost went off the edge and had to let off the gas. I have not been able to beat my ghost since I set that time.

Seeing this list, I am puzzled as to why about half the tracks have different names in the PAL version of the game. Maka Wuhu is the strangest one; I know it as Wuhu Mountain Loop. It's like they didn't even translate that from Japanese.

Do I have to play with guys online to get your ghost data for time trials?
Title: Re: NWR Mario Kart T.T. Records
Post by: oohhboy on January 11, 2012, 11:41:58 PM
No. The Ghost data it fetches are random except fo dev times an the very top players and appears to ignore the actual distribution of times, it gives you times from virtually the entire range. The Ghost "7" data and spotpass is picked mostly based on which standard of deviation you are in with some randomness thrown in. It eventually pushs you towards times you can't beat.

Rainbow Road SNES Lighting cup. 1.22.683.

It's about .5 seconds off the developer time from a month or two back. Until I figure out where the others get their stupid amount of extra speed from, I can't be fucked to improve that time. It's fucking ridiculous.

If anyone from these boards can beat these scores I will give you something special!

Also new tips from Caterkiller!

-If there is an on rails gliding section make sure you hold down on the slider pad. Rearing the kart back gives you more speed then if you just let the game do it's thing. Holding forward actually slows you down significantly. This can shave full seconds off of your time! Air ship fortress and Waluigi Pinpball are good examples.

-If there is a stage that uses grass as part of the major short cuts, cars with good handling off road make a HUGE difference to your mushroom speed.

-When bouncing on a mushroom hold back to catch a lot of air and travel through the sky, the bigger the jump the faster the mid air speed. New DK stage, New Mario Circuit.

-I just realized you can cut off the glider at any point. So far I have only found one stage where that is super important. On the Air Ship fortress, if you break in mid air you can cut off the glider and descend down to the ground faster. But if you do it too soon you fall off the stage, do it too late and you won't maintain the momentum to circle around that big stair case pillar thing.

Seriously try to beat my 3 scores up there!

I'm still not entirely convinced some people don't cheat. But certain times that I thought were once impossible i've actually beaten or in some cases I pass up that racer only to fumble later in the race and lose. Good luck!
