Title: Episode 68: Ambassador's Quest
Post by: oksoda on September 02, 2011, 02:48:04 PM

I hope you're enjoying your Ambassador games, because I know we are.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newscast/27683

We've got a small but sweet cast this week of Neal, Andy, and Scott. The three discuss the full slate of now available NES games for 3DS Ambassadors at length. Other topics covered include release dates and product info for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Professor Layton and The Last Spectre, Tetris: Axis, and a few more. There's also a bit of discussion on GameStop's anti-consumer practices, and last week's 3DS Virtual Console release, Gargoyle's Quest.

Don't forget to send us your listener mail to newscast@nintendoworldreport.com

Downloading the track manually... you-know-what is being a pain again.

Did we ever sort out what the deal with London Life in the EU is?

i actually really enjoy Wrecking Crew. I don't get why Mario can't jump the A/B buttons are the same thing so it makes it more difficult than it should be but still a good time

A DKjr '12 remake wouldn't do much new stuff, DK'94 already cribbed a lot from DKjr so there's nothing unique left.

Metroid 1 isn't that confusing once you get used to the way it thinks.
1. Advance slowly, kill everything you can. Keep the enemy counts low to avoid hits and recover health.
2. Rooms aren't dead ends, if it looks like a room just leads into a wall it's a secret passage. Also check the floor and ceiling regularly.
3. Boss lairs don't contain interesting stuff, only go there to kill the boss and open up Tourian.
4. Use bombs and missiles in combat, your beam is practically worthless beyond freezing enemies.

I like how the game actually makes 4. a good idea. In later Metroids the bombs are fairly weak and the missiles are unnecessary (either your beam will do the job or you need super missiles). I played through it and the only time I used a guide was to figure out where the wave beam is (when I learned about it I was just about to enter Tourian and as you all know you NEED the ice beam if you want to kill the Metroids)

Scott's way of saying "coupon" made me think of a mixture of Final Fantasy's moogles and Xenoblade's nopons.

Scott's way of saying "coupon" made me think of a mixture of Final Fantasy's moogles and Xenoblade's nopons.

After I read this, I asked my girlfriend if I say "coupon" weird. She said "yeah, you kinda do." Who knew! From now, I'll just say discount slips.

Also, we fixed the iTunes mix up over the weekend. Just a little technical hic-up. Should be fine now.

Well, there's no y in coupon, it's not pronounced kyuu-pon.

It's a valid pronunciation, though I don't know why.
Quote
Coupon, related to cope and coup, is of French origin. It has developed an American pronunciation variant [kyoo-pon] with an unhistorical y -sound not justified by the spelling. This pronunciation is used by educated speakers and is well-established as perfectly standard, although it is sometimes criticized. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/coupon)

Ah ha! See, dummies, I say coupon that way because I am so educated and intelligent! Forget discount slips, I'm back to kyoo-pon!

I say "queue-pon" too but I also have a problem saying certain words without some kind of added accent, so I don't think the pronunciation is related to the spelling.

That's how I say coupon as well; it's how I've always heard it pronounced.  I would chalk up the pronunciation to growing up in the South, but my wife's family is from the East coast, and that's how they pronounce it as well.

Ridiculous as their plots points might be, the Professor Layton games tell their stories well; I'll admit that I was also a little teary during the Unwound Future at a couple of points.  I enjoy it in the same sense that I still enjoy something like old DCAU series', the stories are told so well (for the most part) that it encourages you to suspend your disbelief long enough to enjoy the ride.  You don't mind playing by the rules of the Layton universe.  It's cool because it almost serves as an origin story for Layton, and it humanizes Layton by allowing you to see a little of what motivates him through glimpses of his past.  It's like learning for the first time why Bruce Wayne became Batman.

Sundoulos - We totally see eye-to-eye on our Layton love. I definitely see the comparisons between the DCAU and Layton, as weird as it may sound.

I actually beat Unwound Future on a flight to Green Bay for a Packer game while I was sitting next to my brother. I was terrified that he was going to talk to me and I was just going to start crying. I didn't want to have to explain why I was so sad.

I just finished listening to this episode with the almost express reason to hear Scott say Coupon because my Wife and I couldn't figure out how to say it Kyoo-pon and I totally missed it... Where is it?
