Jon is back with treasures from his backlog!

The Lindy-Man is back after a month-long absence, and he got game. Three games, in fact. First up is Final Fantasy 3/6, one of his all-time faves (and yes, he lords over Billy in classic RPG cred). He also revisits the balls-hard Contra 4 and renews a commitment to play both Mass Effect games before the third hits early next year. Let the Massathon begin!
Greg queues up Mighty Milky Way, the last WayForward download title before they transition to 3DS with Mighty Switch Force. Jonny evaluates a pair of so-called Metroidvania titles on XBLA: Outland (which isn't really, but still rocks) and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet (which nails the formula in the best way possible). James wraps up with Borderlands, this MMO-like shooter whose sequel was just announced.
Unfortunately, Jonny had to leave us before the second part of the show began, but the rest of the crew gets on with the task of answering your Listener Mail nonetheless, beginning by rating the odds of a comeback for '80s cartoon creation Captain N. Next, there's provocative questions on whether Nintendo "hates" 2D Mario and what lies ahead for the Mega Man franchise in the wake of recent cancellations, before the show concludes with an emphatic restatement of James' disdain for the name "Mario Kart 7."
Don't forget to play Killer 7 and join the forum discussion! Your comments could become part of the show when we pick up RetroActive in the coming weeks. We also love to get your emails -- this handy form is equivalent to typing in the address!
2. The name of the game is Final Fantasy III outside of Japan. Whether you like it or not, that is the case.
was ff3 on the ds the American ff3 or is it the japan ff3

The Japan one. It got a lot of attention because it was the first time the game was released outside of Japan.
Also, KDR, you haven't played online much, have you? The Roland's turret is a godsend with the right abilities. It provides extra firepower, a shield to duck behind as cover, and it has Area of Effect health and ammo regeneration for all of your allies. It would be very overpowered if it recharged more quickly than every two minutes.
I wouldn't say the revivals of Mario, Mega Man and Street Fighter are cyclical, they're just a result of the developers exhausting all the wrong options until they arrived back at the original design. I also wouldn't call the 2D platformer burnt out. Back in the 8 and 16 bit era that genre was the industry. Now we're seeing dozens of first person shooters every year and people aren't calling that genre burnt out.yes. yes. yes. The FPS has even been popular for 20 years. People can't seem to get enough CoD; it's kinda crazy. Racing/ Sport sim have been around longer and are still top sellers year after year. Why companies like capcom and nintendo, decide to throw away tried and true game-play in favor of unsuccessful projects is really, really weird.
NSMB (both of them) seem to suffer from kind of crappy controls--very un-Super Mario. Also, all the worlds were rehashes, it seemed awful lazy. Those games could have both been much, much better. Better art direction and orchestral score would have been nice, too.
For an NSMB sequel you wouldn't need any big headline features, you'd just need more quality. As far as 2D Mario goes the NSMB games are pretty much the bottom tier. SMB3 and World are still seen as the apex of the series. They'd just need to make NSMB3 on par with the original SMB3 and people will flock to it (works fine for Mario Kart, after all) without any big bullet points on the box. That new feature thinking brought us Sunshine and we know how that ended.
The 2D sequences in the Galaxy games are way better than anything in either of the NSMB games. If they want to continue the 2D games, they need to be more like that.Amen.
