Five points to anyone who can notice the difference.

Nintendo has launched a system update for the Nintendo 3DS which updates the system to firmware 2.1.0-4. While it is not immediately known what impact the software update will have, Nintendo states that the update was to improve system stability and that the udpate contained minor adjustments to enhance the overall user experience.

A closer examination of the firmware reveals that the Internet Browser has undergone a slight upgrade from version 1.7412 to 1.7455, and that additional content was added to the 3DS Sounds StreetPass data in the form of new colors.

Although most firmware updates from Nintendo are specifically released to block attempts to modify the hardware or system software, this newest update does not contain any such functionality except a warning in the update text:

Your Nintendo 3DS system and software are not designed for use with any unauthorized device and/or any unauthorized software. Please note that the Nintendo warranties do not cover any defects to or defects caused by unauthorized devices, software, modifications and/or non-licensed accessories.

Furthermore such use may lead to injury to yourself or others and may cause performance issues and/or damage to your Nintendo 3DS system and related services. Nintendo (as well as Nintendo licensees or distributors) is not responsible for any damage or loss caused by the use of such devices, software, modifications or non-licensed accessories.

IMPORTANT: After the Nintendo 3DS system is updated, any existing or future unauthorized technical modification of the hardware or software of your Nintendo 3DS system, or the use of an unauthorized device in connection with your system, may render the system permanently unplayable. Content deriving from the unauthorized modification of the hardware or software of your Nintendo 3DS system may be removed. Failure to accept the update may render games unplayable.

Why release this? I didn't think anyone had hacked the 3DS fully yet.

I'm hoping this is to help with the Netflix hard lock issue that happens from time to time.

I thought that only happened when people downloaded it the first time? I haven't had it lock on me since it came out.

"Although most firmware updates from Nintendo are specifically released to block attempts to modify the 3DS hardware or software, "
? I think this is just the third firmware update. The first added the Internet browser, eShop, and other features. The second patched a crashing error in Ridge Racer 3D caused by the first update. So what updates have been to blocks attempt at modifying the system or software?

Anyways, I guess I will download it.

Fair enough.  Story modified to reflect that slight inaccuracy.

I don't know if this was because of this update, but I noticed that my home screen scrolls a lot farther to the right than it did before.

Yeah I also noticed that. I haven't updated my system yet though, unless it does it automatically through SpotPass. Maybe it expands after a certain amount of content is added to the home screen in order to make sure it never becomes full, though that's just a guess.

Edit* Just checked, my system has not been updated yet. So the expansion was likely caused by something else.

Maybe I didn't notice it before but the sound channel if you have street pass data it actually tells you the song title, and artist of the people you street passed. This is somewhat interesting now to see what other people have listened  and makes it worth worthwhile to do street pass for it now.

Does it censor song titles like it does messages?

"Does it censor song titles like it does messages?"

I certainly hope so. I want to be able to use Street Pass without vulgarity and ugliness appearing on my 3DS.
