We'd like to thank you for your ongoing loyal support of Mega Man Legends 3. Today, however, we must regrettably announce the discontinuation of this project. From the outset the MML3 Project was intended to give gamers across the world insight and input into the development process. Part of this process includes an assessment of whether the title will go into full production, and is based on a number of criteria with input from different sectors of the company. Unfortunately it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria, and it is with regret that we must announce that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project has been cancelled, meaning that Capcom will not be releasing the Prototype or the full game. Additionally, updates of the Mega Man Legends Developer Room will cease as of today, though the North American Developer Room and its forums will remain open indefinitely. We can only express our deepest apologies to all of you who have lent us your unending support, including participation in the Mega Man Legends 3 Developer Room. On behalf of the entire Legends team, please accept our sincere apology for failing to meet the expectations of the fans. We thank you all so much for your extended support of this title and this community, and we hope that you will continue to support the Mega Man franchise as well as other Capcom games.
Short form message to fans, with an assist from Kirby: t(-_-t)

Proof that legends can die.
Pretty bummed about this. It would have been nice to see a new take on the systems of the Legends games.

Was really looking forward to this title, but at the same time I'm not surprised. I kinda was sensing this might happen with it's "demo" thing not showing up on the e-shop. It seems to have been a product lingering on the edge since they first revealed it. Still very sad this happened.

I pretty much expected this once Keiji Inafune left Capcom. It's a shame. I still think Mega Man Legends 3 will rise again. Probably barely resembling this project but the fans will continue clamoring for it and Capcom will eventually give it to them. It will most likely take someone super passionate about the project to get it off the ground, similar to Yoshinori Ono resurrecting Street Fighter.

He started a new company called "Comcept." No surprises there as that's what most designers do when the leave companies.
Thanks, from that I found this article (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/33868/Inafune_Forms_Two_New_Companies_Intercept_And_Comcept.php). It seems he started a gaming company called Intercept and Comcept is a consulting company for all intents and purposes.

This news unsold a friend of mine on a 3DS all by itself.

I really question the sanity of someone who would buy or not buy a system based on one game.

Plenty of people were going to buy a GC for RE4 before Capcom's first act of war against Nintendo and decided not to afterwards...

I would honestly like to see anybody admit that. It's really dumb to do that anyways. If this case, that person is basically willing to pay $290+ tax for a single game?

No, that person is unwilling to spend that much money unless he can play that game.

This is one of the games for which I got a 3DS, so this is rather disappointing. Unlike other subseries of Mega Man, this one has only two games (released here), the last of which was released ten years ago. I guess a game like Mega Man Legends takes too much effort for CapCom, and so they can't release a version of it every nine months.

Disappointing for me as well. I loved the Mega Man Legends series, and MML3 is one of the games that would have pushed me over the edge as an early 3DS adopter. The only draw currently for me right now is to play OoT and the chance to play Donkey Kong '94. I don't care about the other titles that have been released thus far. So, it's not currently worth the $250 pricetag.
The series ultimately has a small, but enthusiastic, fanbase. I could definitely see someone basing a decision to buy a system on that game alone.
