Title: Terraria: Think Legend of Metroidvaniacraft
Post by: KDR_11k on July 09, 2011, 04:21:43 PM
A thread about Terraria (http://www.terrariaonline.com/) is long overdue here. Some people think Terraria is just a lame Piecraft (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/wab/Piecraft/) clone but it's not about youtubing your pretty cakes. Terraria is a game about exploring caves, finding loot and building up a powerful arsenal of weapons. It has the Minecraft place-blocks-where-you-want mechanic but the focus is much more on combat and adventuring with many more fantasy elements (including magic potions and spells).
And today only it's 75% off on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/105600/?snr=1_4_4_).

I tried it the other week. It was interesting, but ultimately didn't scratch the right itch. It fails completely if you're looking for a Minecraft-like experience. Unfortunately that's how everyone keeps trying to describe it. It's far more akin to Castlevania than anything... it just happens to have some rudimentary crafting and black placement elements involved. Definitely give it a try if you can, just don't go in expecting Minecraft in 2D.

Yeah, I love it because that's what I wanted from it. Minecraft's adventure aspect really NEEDS that adventure update and even then I'm not sure it'll be able to stand up to Terraria.

Does it need to stand up to Terraria though? They're apples and oranges, really. Minecraft may not have boss monsters to battle in its dungeons, but it outpaces Terraria every step of the way when it comes to simply exploring. The very 2D nature of Terraria makes it boring in terms of creating worlds, which is exactly what Minecraft excels at. Not that I'm saying Minecraft is perfect, but it is still in beta. :P

Midweek madness on Steam means Terraria is 50% off just as the new update arrives!

If there were a Mac version I'd have gotten it. I'm not sure why that's such a barrier to me, as I could easily play it through CrossOver, but it is.
