Title: Nintendo Shares Lowest in Over Five Years
Post by: the_dan_x on June 09, 2011, 06:12:35 AM

The unveiling of the Wii U did not convince analysts or stock holders.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26702

After the unveiling of the Nintendo Wii U at E3 on June 7, shares for Nintendo have fallen 5.7 percent to 16,930, the lowest in more than five years and is leaving analysts to question whether or not Nintendo will be able to receive the same kind of success they did with the Wii.

“There were high expectations from the new version of the Wii and this fell far short,” Yusuke Tsunoda, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities Co. stated. “People had expected to see something more at a big event like the E3, but there wasn’t really anything more than what’s already reported.”

Sales for Nintendo have been shrinking over the past two years, and Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is hoping that the Wii U will help to revive sales for the video game giant.

A more expensive console to turn around a sales slump? These days? Uh, not.

D0000M3D!!!

Though I myself do plan to purchase one.

The times are rough, and the waining interest in Wii due to the non-gamers drying up and the tough economy are partly to blame. d000m3d, indeed!  :P:

I'll be getting one day one myself, as well. I've been getting Nintendo consoles (and handhelds) at launch since the GameBoy Advance. I don't think I'll quit just yet.

Curious - what did Nintendo's stock do after the first E3 where the Wii remote was shown?

Well surely THIS time Nintendo truly is doomed.

I mean, sure, it's been said about 500 times in the last 5 years but... THIS time.  Hella doomed.

@ UncleBob

I heard the same exact 5% dip happened after the Wii was shown.  And we all know that thing didn't make anyone a dime.

Is it because of a lack of faith in the Wii U or is the fact that at E3 Nintendo more or less revealed that the Wii is finished?

Probably both. From following video games news feed, I've noticed that stock holders are a fragile bunch. I guess you can't blame them when their money is on the line.

The Wii has been running on vapors for years. The system is still selling like hot cakes, but the games which are driving it forward are the same usual suspects that have been out since 2009 or earlier. Nintendo should be applauded because they managed to create about a dozen or so games which keep selling and driving system sales despite their age. Perpetual motion may be impossible by the laws of thermodynamics, but Nintendo has somehow managed to pull it off on the Wii. New games aren't needed, because the same stuff keeps selling and moving it along...

If you look at Nintendo's stock it has been on a decline for years.  I think part of that is trading on the Tokyo Exchange.

I'm just curious, is anyone reporting the stock prices for MS after their Kinect, er XBox, conference or Sony after their... so-so... conference?

By the way, I hate that modern gaming discussion treads into flappin' STOCK PRICES!!

Play.

I think Sony might have gone up.  The General Press review is very positive about Vita coming out with its "Low Price".

See this is what I absolutely hate about the Wii.  Nintendo has a handful of games that sell so well for so long that they can coast and they DO.  You know why we don't get Xenoblade?  Because Nintendo doesn't HAVE to give us it to turn a profit so they don't care.  Why release only like two games for the Wii all year?  Because they can.  The Wii exposed something about Nintendo that I didn't want to know.

@Ceric

Linky?

@Ian Sane & Chozo Ghost

I'm sure you're both very smart folks, in fact, I think I've seen you both say good things in other threads.

But let's see here, ah yes, it was alllllllllllll the way back in 2010 when we got No More Heroes 2, Metroid Other M, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Red Steel 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Monster Huntri Tri, DKCR, Epic Mickey, Sonic Colors, Tatsunoko VS. Capcom and GoldenEye007.

And if you didn't care about content, but ONLY game sales, Just Dance 2 says "hello!"

So let's see ... all this was when? Oh yea, LAST YEAR!  As in, the most recent possible year that isn't now.

Running on vapors? This is why we don't have Xenoblade??  shhhheeesh.

Name a notable Wii game that came out in 2011.  We're SIX MONTHS in.  This isn't like January.  We're almost halfway through the year and the Wii has been a wasteland.  That's running on vapours.

Oh noes! Not six whole months without a notable release! It's almost as if I have time to play all the games I got at Christmas!

This isn't exactly surprising, since Nintendo isn't currently doing so well in the market. Wii sales are slowing, and the 3DS didn't take off like Nintendo had hoped. Though, I do think it is a bit panicky and lacks foresight to sell now. The Wii U is a tough call right now since so little was shown, but there's still plenty of time to wait and see what kind of games will launch along with it. But the 3DS had a good showing, and with Super Mario 3D and Mario Kart on the way it's pretty much guaranteed to be a hot item this holiday.

I can't speak for investors but I think the Wii was the last Nintendo system I plan on buying for a while.  They abandoned it quickly and never made a good motion control game beyond Wii Sports.  Nintendo didn't make good on the Wii, I doubt the WiiU is going to be any different.

A slew of Halo, Uncharted and G__ of War games await you, my good lad.  May their rainbow of experiences fulfill you like Kart, Galaxy, Metroid, Zelda, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, never could.

Hey this is an n64 person perspective, but back in the day on older consoles once a new console was announced or even before then developers would stop developing for a console not because they knew games would stop selling anyways. Sales slow down like clockwork. If we came out in 2006 an had a 6 year life-span then the optimal time to have games out for it would be in 2008 and 9 when sales would be the highest. If you notice NIntendo always cuts off support for a system a year and a half before the new one comes out. Unfortunately the third parties cut out 2 years before hand making the drought even worse.
Also, wasn't everyone on a couple months ago complaining they had TOO MANY THINGS TO PLAY.

Check this out

Major releases starting from the n64 generation, most of these games were both games that Nintendo pushed and also sold well

Not like DS doesnt keep Nintendo afloat..that thing still prints money, also lost of 3ds games were announced to fill the void, don't have one? Get one.

BTW, you forgot, in no particular order:

No More Heroes 2
Silent Hill Shattered Memories
Capcom vs. Tatsunoku

Which were all good games that bombed, and:

Epic Mickey

Which sold well and was good, but the company that made it bombed anyway.

@ThePerm

I love you (like a brother)

Thank you for being smart.

@leahsdad

All things considered, Epic Mickey sold REALLY well.  And someone must still be at work since the game just got green-lit for a Japanese release.  I'm so tired I'm blanking on the name of the main creator, Warren Specter? I'm pretty sure so long as he's around and the game keeps selling we have a good chance at a sequel.

Just got rid of my 360 since nothing looked good on the horizon.  what games did I have?  Il-2 sturmovik, BioShock, Mirror's Edge, Skate 2, Beautiful Katamari, Worms, and Bionic Command Rearmed--you know all the most hardcore games for SERIOUS GAMERS. Assumptions, assumptions, ass...

Okay, so there is mario kart wii, the rubber banded racing game that pales in comparison to the DS version.
Mario Galaxy that has the lame limited power ups and linear, boring levels and zero challenge outside of the camera.
Metroid, well there's the gamecube left over. that was okay.  OR the great, story driven, space opera that needs someone to flush it.
Zelda--oh, yeah, the gamecube game (that was passable but nowhere near as good as any other console zelda game).

Retreads and inferior versions of better games?  That's why I should care about Wii?
Where were the awesome motion control games?  Nowhere?
Maybe you like worse versions of old games.... I'm not going to begrudge you for it.  I'm not going to pretend like I'm missing out on something when I'm not and I'm not going to pretend that I'm being served as a Nintendo customer when I'm not.

OK, so, you can't find anything enjoyable on any Microsoft or Nintendo platform.

Ever consider the possibility that you don't like modern video games?

Nothing wrong with being a retro gamer if that's what you're in to.

NinSage,

I am retro/old school.  Retro/Old School is also where the money is.  NSMBWii was a system seller.  Mario Kart Wii was a system seller.  There's a reason that some people never bought anything else but Wii Sports--it's because Nintendo never followed it up with anything.  The Wii was supposed to be a return to the old school--but nintendo changed directions as soon as they could.  Nintendo isn't following the market; they're doing something else.  It shouldn't be a surprise that their stock is falling--because the old school has proven many times over that they're not going to follow Nintendo/Sega/Sony/Microsoft.

For the record: Nintendo's stock rose after E3 2006's Wii unveiling.

Well, technically the box was seen in E3 2005 and the controller with tech demos in TGS 2005. E3 2006 was where they showed the actual games we would be playing.
Title: Re: Nintendo Shares Lowest in Over Five Years
Post by: marty on June 10, 2011, 05:48:22 PM
My mistake, Nintendo's stock was rising from the time the Wii was shown at E3 2005 and was still on the rise by E3 2006--it didn't drop once the Wii was shown--unlike now.
Title: Re: Nintendo Shares Lowest in Over Five Years

There's a reason that some people never bought anything else but Wii Sports--it's because Nintendo never followed it up with anything.

Please, elaborate.  If you're saying a substantial amount of Wii owners never bought a game (since WS came with the console), then please, show us the numbers.  How many we talking here? 70%? 50%? 30%?

Must be a lot for you to reach the conclusion that Nintendo never released a Wii game "people" found worth purchasing.

Unless, of course, the emphasis here is on the "some" in "some people" ... in which case this is a wasted conversation.  I'm sure "some people" used the Wii as a means of footwear (http://kotaku.com/5139840/wii+mote-jackets-double-as-kiddy-shoes), that doesn't mean Nintendo joined the fashion biz.

The Wii was supposed to be a return to the old school--

Where are you getting that?  What part of "never before seen control scheme" and codename "revolution" says "return to the old school"?

For the record: Nintendo's stock rose after E3 2006's Wii unveiling.

A company called Nintendo doesn't think so ...

those don't look like falling stock prices to me.

As far as some people go.
I know my parents haven't bought anything for their wii since they got one in 2008.  Same story with other relatives and friends.

And, I'd say making the controller shaped like an NES controller, and not having an analog stick, is quite clearly a step in the old school direction.  Same goes for not keeping up with graphics, online, and having a pack in game that's focus was local multiplayer.  If the Wii is all about new controls, where are the motion control games?  Wii sports is really the only one that "couldn't" be done on another controller worth anything.  So, where are all the great motion control games?  The Wii took off, not because it was new, but because it was fun--old school fun.  Look at NSMBWii, even though it's production values suck and isn't a very inspired game, it sold 2x as much as mario Galaxy, the much more polished, NEW, game.
