Title: Eternal Darkness Character question (spoilers)
Post by: NickNiteQ93 on May 07, 2003, 04:33:40 PM
Yes there's spoilers even though everyone should have had the chance to play the damn game.

Ok, I was reading the official site, and on there it said you can play everything from a "Monk during the paranoia of the Inquisition to a Special Forces commando deep behind enemy lines."

I was wondering, was the commando taken out and replaced by another character, like Mike Edwards?  Or was he taken out completely?  Just wondering if this is a typo that they forgot to correct.

The character they talk about is the Canadian Fire fighter, wazzis name.  The thing is, while he's not "U.S. Marine Special Forces" he was part of A special force during desert storm.  Plus I mean, you do get all the weapons and such, so it's a rather nitpicky point.

(hmm...Now that I re-read and see you said commando, I'm not really sure. I think they were referring to him though)

The Commando character was the prototype for Michael's game.  A long while back, before (or after?) E3 2001, fuzzy ED screens were leaked out on the 'net featuring a person with desert fatigues and a rounded kevlar U.S.-style helmet, arguably the Desert Storm trooper.  Denis Dyack did mention many changes were made to ED's storyline, and was eventually re-written so that the vast majority of the playable characters would be "regular people," chosen to be heroes.  That helps explain why Pious Augustus seems to be the only hardened warrior/killer among the playable cast, and thus doesn't lose sanity at all, probably due to his battlefield experience.

What's left of the commando himself is the corpse Michael encounters at the beginning of his chapter.  Looking at the commando's uniform and weapon loadout, he may have been U.S. Army Special Forces.

Also, in one of the old Silicon Knight/ED wallpapers, there's a husky bald man in the dark background depicted (use a photo editor to lighten the picture) who obviously did not make the final cut.

Karim could be counted as a warrior, even though he wasn't in an army or anything. And I think a firefighter would be pretty hardened too, but in the game people like Karim and Michael have the smallest sanity meters. That's to keep their huge life bars balanced out...The reason Pious didn't lose sanity at all (I thought, but I can't remember, I haven't played the first level in a while) was because it was the first level in the game. They didn't even have the health bar; it showed up when you actually got hit. It was like a tutorial..
