Title: Bioshock Infinite
Post by: ShyGuy on May 28, 2011, 08:52:09 PM
I don't think we have a thread for this game yet.

I thought the first Bioshock was a decent game that over-promised and under delivered. Haven't played BioShock 2.

This new one looks good, and I'm getting hyped. Watching the new gameplay trailer though, you get the impression that your a bad guy running around this world destroying things and killing people. I guess that was true of the first game too.

I really have to question 2K's decision to release gameplay footage of this game last year when it's not supposed to release till next year, but the game does look awesome and way Elizabeth is going to be incorporated into the gameplay has some really interesting possibilities.  I just hope the developers don't use the Columbia setting as a way for them to force their political beliefs upon the player.  The nice thing about the original Bioshock is that you could take the game's satire several different valid ways.  I hope the same is true of this game.

As for Bioshock 2, it's an excellent game in its own right.  I think people expected a lot of unreasonable things with the sequel and were, thus, disappointed.  It has an excellent story, some welcome gameplay tweaks, and even a pretty decent multiplayer mode.  The Minerva's Den DLC is especially great.

I haven't played either Bioshock 1 or 2 yet (though I purchased and own Bioshock 2), but from what I understand they are very different games from one another. In Bioshock 1 you were a human, but in 2 you play the part of a haunted diving suit. So your role in each game is very different, even though the setting is the same.

On the other hand, the third Bioshock game is going to be set on a floating city up in the sky so its guaranteed to be extremely different than the last two games which were set in an underwater city.

OK, if you haven't played the first Bioshock yet, that seriously needs to become a priority for you sometime in the near future, followed by Bioshock 2.  They're both awesome games, though the engine does look its age these days.  Incidentally, the term you're looking for is "Big Daddy", and it's not really supernatural.

I watched one of the gameplay demonstrations of this game, and I have to say, Bioshock Infinite looks super cool. I bought the first Bioshock ages ago and still haven't gotten around to playing it, so that's near the top of my list for this summer's backlog clearance. Having said that, it would appear that this newest game can still be enjoyed just fine without playing its predecessors, as apart from the basic shooting/plasmid mechanics, everything else seems to be really quite different.

Bioshock 2 is only about $11 on Amazon as of this writing, so I'd advise everyone who has a PS3 or 360 grab it because if nothing else its cheap so even if you don't like it you're not out much.

Bioshock has about a four hours worth of content in an eight hour game. It's pretty good, but I was let down after reading a preview in Game Informer before the game came out. A lot of the things promised didn't deliver.

New enemy trailer.

Does anyone else notice that Ken Levine's wide jaw makes him look like a pinhead? He should grow his hair out longer on the sides to balance out the shape of his face.

That's the motorized patriot video, and there's also a more recent video with an enemy that they call handyman.
Title: Bioshock Infinite delayed...
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on May 09, 2012, 11:14:11 PM
I wasn't sure where to put this, so I thought I would just leave it here...

Bioshock Infinite has been delayed to 2013.

Quote from: Ken Levine
When we announced the release date of BioShock Infinite in March, we felt pretty good about the timing.

Since then, we’ve come to realize that some specific tweaks and improvements will make Infinite into something even more extraordinary. Therefore, to give our talented team the time they need, we’ve decided to move the game’s release to February 26, 2013. We wanted to let our loyal (and very patient!) fans know this as soon as possible.

I think new developments have caused this delay. Optimizations for a new system maybe?
There are a lot of fun and unique things you can do with the uMote in a FPS.

I doubt it's a Wii U thing. The post said the game wasn't gonna be at E3, and that would be where you'd want to show off any cool uPad features that would justify the delay.

He said they weren't gonna show off the game, that doesn't mean they couldn't announce it for Wii U at E3 and at a later date show the Wii U Controller functions.

True, and I suppose there are other events between then and the release to show it off. However, they'd basically be saying that's the real reason for the delay but still couldn't show anything to justify it.

I read today that Kotaku speculated that the delay is for a Multiplayer mode.

I know. Just letting you know what it could be for. I'm curious: has Levine been asked about Wii U, before?

He was one of the people shown talking about Wii U in Nintendo's press conference video from E3 last year. Don't know if he has been asked since then though.

When delays are incurred it also means more cash pouring out of the publisher's wallet to finance the extended development. Not a happy thing at all for a publisher standpoint and therefore I imagine securing that additional funding is like pulling teeth. Coupled with the added cost of producing a WiiU SKU (common assets but still considerable labour demands on top of getting to grips and optimizing for new hardware) I have to think its not a great business move at this time, though it would be a popular news clip for Nintendo!
With Nintendo projecting only modest fiscal year WiiU sales (combined 10.5 million worldwide  for Wii and WiiU) by the time of infinite's revised release date, if a version of Bioshock does come I think it would be later rather than sooner...

Unless...Nintendo is fronting some of the cost for extended development...and asked for a universal release in return.  Imagine, Nintendo would think it a good position to through some bones to the developer of one of the best mature games of this generation for their next generation game.

"Nintendo is fronting some of the cost for extended development"

Yeah, wishful thinking but I wouldn't bet on that.  The game is just taking longer than planned which happens 90% of the time in developement.  Really doesn't have anything to do with the WIIU.  Delaying the game and missing out of holiday sales hurts the bottom line but so doesn't rushing an game out the door to meet an deadline.

I know it is just wishful thinking.  I am not actually betting on it being on WiiU at all...but I just thought I would throw speculation into the wind and see if it sticks.

Unfortunately, I think it's pretty obvious that this delay is to implement a shoehorned multiplayer mode that the vast majority of Bioshock players likely don't even want.  Yeah, Bioshock 2's was surprisingly decent, but I wouldn't have played it at all if it didn't have trophies associated with it that I needed for the Platinum, and once I had those I didn't feel any compulsion to keep playing it.

The only other possible scenario is that 2K wanted the game pushed back because they knew it would sell in any time of the year, but Dishonored (as a new IP) needed the holiday sales push.

Either way, this really bites.  Bioshock Infinite was probably the game I was most looking forward to this year, and it's looked near-finished for at least a year now.

That is a great point about the shoe-horned multiplayer but wow 4 extra months for it.
The hope would be then that Irrational games can be trusted to implement a quality multi mode after learning from the previous development.
