Shinobi is making his return on 3DS this September, Sega confirmed following a reveal on the cover of next month's Nintendo Power.

A prequel starring Jiro Musashi, the father of series star Joe Musashi, the game, simply titled Shinobi, will feature side-scrolling gameplay reminiscent of the original games. In addition, Shinobi will support StreetPass and offer a plethora of achievements and challenges.

The game, as previously rumored, is being developed by portable veterans Griptonite Games, best known for their work on the recent Metroid-esque Spider-Man titles on DS. Griptonite makes their 3DS debut in early June with the movie-based Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters.

Shinobi will be out in stores in September 2011.

Never played a Shinobi game before. Also never played anything by Griptonite Games, but I've heard through osmosis that their past work is good, so I'll add this to the steadily growing list of Q3 and Q4 games to look out for on 3DS.

did this get leaked and caused Sega to reveal it? If so that sucks that so close to E3 people couldn't keep mouth shut. I am totally ignorant on the franchise but it seems interesting.

No Batman/Spiderman, no sale (unfortunately).

A Nintendo Power cover announced it already in addition to the leak.
