Title: Gamecube to drop price on system on May 15th 2003?
Post by: r00d on May 06, 2003, 02:20:57 PM
Ive heard gamecube will drop the price of the gamecube on May 15th 2003 after E3 is over.  I think the new price I heard is between 90 and 100 dollars! wow what a deal...  and no this is no joke.  Anyone else heard this?

Ummm i can honestly say that is the biggest load of BS i've ever heard. There was already a price cut ( 149.99 ) There is no way they are cutting it to less then 100$. And if this does happen, ill buy everyone on these boards another GC ( this statement is not to be taken seriously ).

I'm sure it won't happen in May. Nintendo just added Zelda to its bundle offer and there's no way Nintendo is going to sell a Gamecube w/Zelda for just $99.
I do think a price drop to $99.99 later this year - either at the start of the holiday season or along with the release of Mario Kart - would help Nintendo a lot though.
One hundered dollars is the magic number, basically. If something is over $100, it's an investment that people are really hesitant to make. But, if something is under $100, many people are willing to buy it on a whim or at least with little thought or hesitation.
There are three groups of people Nintendo is trying to go after but seems to failing at thanks to the price. Firstly, Nintendo has said since the start that it wants PS2 owners to buy a Gamecube as a second console and I'm sure there are a lot of PS2 owners who would like to but just aren't willing to at $150. Secondly, though the Gamecube has the reputation of being a "kiddy" console, as far as I can tell, very few kids actually own one. The Gamecube's current userbase seems to consist mostly of older Nintendo fans. Parents just aren't willing to buy a $150 game console for their kids anymore. Instead, they're just buying them GBAs because they're so cheap. Basically, a price drop would open the flood-gates to millions of people who otherwise wouldn't be willing to buy a Gamecube. It could make all the difference.
Best of all, unlike MS, Nintendo can drop the console's price without taking much (if any) of a loss. The cost-effective design of the Gamecube is a huge advantage Nintendo has that it just isn't taking advantage of.
The Gamecube may be $50 cheaper than the XBox but that was more than cancelled out when MS started giving away two free games with its console. I hate to admit it, but I can't blame people for picking the XBox over the Gamecube over the holiday season. It was simply the better deal.

at the end of your statement.  Check it out! Because you could've quite possible owed alot of people Gamecubes.  Good thing they may be getting cheaper.

Exactly, I see this time and time agian. Concerned (often Very Religious) Parents come into EB/Best Buy/etc...
XBOX - they see Halo with its amazing world, great engine, mature content... and also guns. Men with guns. Bad.
PS2 - they see the fabulous, esoteric RPGs with detailed stories, character development, and.. what's this? characters kissing and/or touching in the intro movie? no no, little Timmy might get the wrong idea that it's okay to kiss/touch someone of the opposite gender before marriage.
Gamecube - Well, there's happy, asexual, non-threatening smiling Mario with his giddy mushroom pals, and happy, asexual, non-threatening Zelda and his(her?) giddy cartoon friends... but, geez, $150...
GBA - Heck, Ham-ham heartbreak and a game boy advance in cool-sounding *arctic* color for less than $100? Sign me up!

Dropping the price of the GCN to $100, eh?  I dunno... if it does happen around the shopping season a helluva lot of people will buy the system, but at what cost to Nintendo?  Surely they realize that by making another price cut they might end up losing money on every system that they sell instead of making a profit or breaking even??

I saw similar reports of Cube price cuts on Voodooextreme.com a week or two ago. People emailed the mods telling them that they had those in-store promo/signs telling of the cuts and not to display them till told by corporate office.

It isn't B.S.   ALL THREE CONSOLES WILL BE DROPPING THEIR PRICES SOON. There are alot of various game store employees ( EB & GS ) who have seen price drop advertising in their back rooms with do not display until orders on them. It is about $100 for Gamecube & $150 for Xbox & PS2. I am not sure about the date but it will be this summer by the latest.

Nintendo has always said that they don't initiate price drops but if/when Sony or MS drop their prices Nintendo will do so to remain competitive.  This is a pretty old rumour and generally I don't think anyone will be surprised if a price drop occurs.

Personally I couldn't care if the Cube drops in price because I already have one and paid the full launch price for it.  However I will buy a PS2 if the price drops.  I really only care if the other consoles drop in price and I imagine that's the same for most of the people on this forum as almost everyone here has a Gamecube.

that sp thing brings up a valid point..also..when ps2, and xbox are the same price as gamecube it make stupid people think that since their the same price they must be of equal power.

It is definately coming. The recent (this week) ads on Best Buy and Circuit City do NOT list the XBOX console at 199 with both Sega games free anymore (bundle deal thing) -- the XBOX is $199 with one FREE game from Platinum collection. I think they are just getting ready to drop the price.

Take from that what you will.

i know the gamcube won't go down in price, not a full 50$

maybe 120, but then it won't come packaged with a free game.

there is NO WAY that nintendo will market the gamecube at the same price as a handheld.

theres just NO WAY. that could ever. ever. happen, and i also know that they won't bring down the price of the SP barely 2 month's after it was released.

All I'm saying, Syl_Aran, is to not be surprised.  I see your point about the SP, and it does seem a bit strange, but that is what I am hearing.

umm, well i have to shed some new light on this whole topic. i truely beleive that there will be a price drop sometime soon.  we just recieved a large shipment of video game consoles from all of the big players (microsoft, nintendo, and sony in case you didnt know).  this happened the last time there was a rumored price drop and it happened soon after.  i think it is sooner than we beleive. by the way, i work at circtuit city in case you were wondering. this couldnt have been a replenishment either, it was way too big of a shipment to be replenishments.

there just getting ready for all the E3 hype, it makes sense to expect higher cells with all the must-have titles they will be showing.

I don't doubt that PS2 or Xbox may have a price drop, but im SURE the gamcube won't.

why wouldn't nintendo drop the gamecube to $99 and keep the gba sp at the same price...think about it.  the gba is on its playing in its own handheld market w/o current competition.  i know that it would make the gamecube's value look less than the gba sp...people can't find an sp anywhere anyways (not in san diego anyways).  so they can do it for a while...that's what i think

In reply to the kids not owning a GameCube:
I think the price won't help either way.
From what I hear, most kids under the age of 14 or 15 won't buy a GameCube because it's kiddy. My parents are very, very strict (my mom starts sweating when I ask for a M-rated game), but even I got away with Halo, and even DOA: Xtreme Beach Volleyball.
2nd) When kids see "Xbox - $150, PS2 - $150, GCN - $100", they're going to think the reason the GCN is cheaper is because it's a less powerful console/ it's not doing very well.
Above everything else, kids want to do what the "adults" are doing. They think adults are buying Xboxes (which isn't true from what I've seen, most gamers over the age of 18 have a PS2 and many have a GCN).
Of course, where I live price is rarely a concern. So maybe in "less-fortunate" neighborhoods, they will start buying a GCN once it goes under 100.

Just wait until E3.  Nintendo could drop their price in response to Microsoft and Sony.  Then again, if the GCN is priced around a hundred dollars, wouldn't Nintendo be losing money for every system sold?  The GCN is not even two years old in the US.  More realisticially, I see a price cut down to $119.99.

They can join the club then. Its not that big a deal. Should have remain $100 less the PS2 and Xbox all along, I believe like it was in the beginning. That way you would be getting your moneys worth. Heck PS2 could legitimtely be $50-$100 less then xbox, and it would make sense. Making xbox in the neigborhood of $300 all over again, but just saying.

i will be suprised if the price doesnt drop by e3. pgc ran the strory and from what it said it seemed pretty likely that the consoles will all recieve price cuts at e3.
