Title: Metroid Prime Trilogy is it worth getting at some point?
Post by: Ceric on May 03, 2011, 11:12:24 AM
Oh my lord.
I just went looking for this game online because it might be nice to play through all of Prime again and I hadn't done it with the new controls. Its expensive and out everywhere. I thought the price might have dropped a little by now. I have all the original primes. I don't know if it be worth picking up for the going price.

It's worth it, but at this point your only hope is that it miraculously becomes a Wii Select title or it turns up in a used section. It had limited release at the time.

It is expensive, but if you figure you get all three games with improved controls its worth it. Try adding up the price of Primes 1, 2, and 3. Prime 3 alone is probably $50 still. The only way it isn't worth it is if you already own one or two of the games, in which case it may make more sense to just buy whatever one you're missing as opposed to buying the Trilogy. But the nice thing about the Trilogy is the new controls and the nice metal collectors case. It is also nice to have all of them on one single disc. So whether its worth it or not is really up to you.
I wouldn't hold my breath on this being a Nintendo Select title. Nintendo may release the primes individually as Select titles for $20, but I doubt they are going to do it with the Trilogy because why would they give all three games away for $20 when they could milk them individually and make more money? It is possible, but I doubt it.

Yeah, I have them all. The new controls for 1 and 2 is what I get out of it.

I'd say yes but then I only ever owned Prime 3 before getting the trilogy. The controls are fantastic though.

If you look in the right places, you might get lucky. I still, very rarely, see it new for $50...

It's worth it. The controls are good and bad. Prime 1 and 2 weren't made for motion controls so there are annoying parts of the game where the lock-on function of the originals is missed. Also, Retro got rid of some neat-o graphical effects for some reason and Admiral Dane no longer says "Damn" in Corruption. Who cares? The internets did, apparently.

The effects that are missing from Prime 1 and 2 are gone because they were originally effects hard-coded to specific locations on the screen. In the conversion to the widescreen Trilogy versions, those effects would have had to be completely redone to be ported over so Retro dumped them. And if you don't like having the Prime 3 free aim, you can always switch the old Lock-on Aiming back on. That's what I used when I played all 3 Primes.
As for the game, this collection was worth getting at full price at launch, so yes it's still worth buying now for whatever you can get it for.

Since you own all three games then I would say no, it isn't worth it. At least, not for the prices you could find. If it were fairly cheap then I'd say yes, but are different controls really worth that much to you? Would you never play the games again without the Wii controls? I guess that's a question you'll have to answer on your own.
You could buy all three games separately for cheaper than what the collection goes for. It just goes to show, adding "Collector's Edition" to any item really does get people to shell out more money for it, for whatever reason.

The same is true with Super Mario All Stars. You could buy all three games off the VC for 500 points each for a total of $15 which is half of what All Stars cost when it was released. Now that its discontinued the price of it is probably even higher.

I bought it for my brother-in-law brand new 2 years ago for $15. He's never played it.

Four games - $21. Doesn't include the art book/soundtrack. Is locked to a single console. Only allows one save file per game.

My Disappointment with All-Star is that its well... All-stars. I mean seriously its the same game back from the SNES. They could say include Mario 64 or any other Mario game. They had a grand opportunity to add a lot of different games that featured Mario like Mario Tennis, Mario Party, etc. We get a rehash of an old game. Not only that but not even the best versions either. The GBA version of Mario Bros 3 is the best of the bunch and that's saying something with that already excellent game.

If you like the Prime series, the Triliogy set is a must have. The games are updated with new visuals, new controls and it is all packaged under a great presentation. Not to mention you have the challenge system where you earn credits in order to unlock various things.

If you've already played all three games separately and don't care much about replaying the first two with Wii controls, there's no reason to get Trilogy. I think it's a wonderful package with well over 50 hours of awesome Metroid gameplay on a single disc. All three of them look fantastic and of course hold up in terms of gameplay.
I actually think a Nintendo Selects reissue is quite possible, though it would probably be done with non-premium packaging.

If it comes out for $20 bucks its a not brainer. I probably get it for my littlest brother as well then.

Since Trilogy is multiple games bundled on one disc its the sort of thin Nintendo only offers for a limited time. That's also how it was with Super Mario All Stars. Nintendo isn't the sort of company to bundle their games and give them away for a discount for extended periods. They may do it for a limited time, but that's it. They'd rather you buy them all separately so they can make more money.

I thought you could not buy the SNES versions of SMB 1, 2 and 3 on VC, just the original NES versions? So, unless you have the SNES cartridge (like I do) these games are indeed exclusive?

Those don't have the upgraded presentation and features though. A better example would be to say that the original SNES cartridge is cheaper than the Wii version.

If you are going to play the games again, this collection is definitely the best way to do it. It's like Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition; I could never go back to the old controls.

You can't point at overpriced sealed copies and say that's what it goes for. Just look how little the used copies sell for, half the price of the Wii version's MSRP.
