If I had to choose between the two, I'd say Halo, but that may just be because I'm burnt out on the Call of Duty franchise. Though if I'm going to play a FPS on the 360, it's probably more likely to be Perfect Dark on XBLA.

Actually, not a giant fan of either, but I respect what they do well.

I'm no fan of either series, but between the two, I'd pick Halo since it is more science-fictiony. Shooters like Doom and Perfect Dark are more my thing.

I have to go with Call of Duty on this one.  I haven't played much of any Halo game outside some brief minutes with the original game and 3 or so missions of the Reach Singleplayer Campaign.  Just from what I've seen, it would be difficult to imagine an FPS more generic, bland, and archaic than the Halo series.  It feels like a 3D re-skin of the original Doom, with all the gameplay complexity that entails.  I can at least find enjoyment in the Call of Duty Singleplayer campaigns, as well as increasingly decent storytelling.

Is it really? COD features things like "tactical insertions", "Sentry Guns", and other weird non-realistic ****.

"Non-realistic" does not equal "science-fiction." It's a videogame so it is going to have to take a few things beyond realistic limits (like how you can't get shot and magically heal in five seconds), but it strives for realism. You can't really point at a couple of items that don't exist in the real world and say the game is the same as one where you go to a fictional world and blast aliens from another planet.

It sounds like Killzone would be up your alley, because it is also very sci-fi and is set in the future on other worlds.

I've actually been tempted to try out the Killzone games (and the Resistance games, for that matter), but have been having trouble finding a copy of Killzone 1.  I was pretty unimpressed with the demo for Killzone 3, so outside of a casual browsing for it every now and then I really haven't cared enough to delve online for it.  What about the Killzone games do you recommend?

Really? I had no trouble at all finding a copy on Amazon. Its there if you want to get it... it looks like its $24 something. When I got it it was only $19.99. Online retailers are generally cheaper, and you also don't have to pay taxes. Plus if you order over $25 on amazon you can get free shipping. I'm sure if you wait long enough you will find a copy somewhere in a brick and mortar retailer if you want. That's up to you. Killzone 2 is a Greatest Hits title, so I don't think it should be *that* hard to find.

What do I recommend about it? I dunno. I'm new to it myself. I'm probably about half way through the campaign at this point. I've dabbled a bit with the online multiplayer, but I haven't been able to do that lately for obvious reasons. It has things about it I like better than COD but also things that it does worse. It would be nice to create a game taking the best elements of various FPS games and then fusing them all together. It seems like right now there's no single game that manages to get EVERYTHING just right.

ETA: Okay, I just noticed you said Killzone 1. That's a PS2 game and from everything I've heard its not that great. I thought we were talking about Killzone 2.

I never played the first one, and what I've heard about it doesn't make me want to. Killzone seems to me like Uncharted, in that it's probably best just to skip to the second one.

Sentry guns are real. Not like call of Duty, but they are real.

I didn't forget. I'm just not going to because I've never played Halo so I don't know how to vote.

They may be real today, but they weren't real in 1968 when Black Ops was set. That would be like having assault rifles in a civil war game or something. I also thought the RC car thing was stupid, not just because it is very Noobish (which it is), but also because in 1968 they didn't have cameras small enough to mount on a tiny toy car chasis. I can buy an RC car with C4, but having a 60s era camera mounted on it and someone controlling it using that is just too much.

Halo.
Better enemies, better and cooler weapons, and no infinte respawns of the enemy until I reach checkpoint x.
