Title: SP screen "shadow"
Post by: bcforn64 on May 05, 2003, 11:38:43 PM
when looking at the gameboy advance SP  screen closely, I notice that when the unit displays white on black the screen leaves a "shadow" of the image above it. For example text may look like it's being displayed twice, only one is not too visable. Is this normal or am I the only one who's screen does this?

What's going on is that the light from the SP is bouncing into the lightguide, back down to the screen and through the light guide, giving a ghosting effect.  It goes away when the light is off.

alright thanx guys, lol I thought it may have been a defect. My eyes aren't the greatest so when I looked closely at the screen I thought I wasn't focusing right. lol If it happens with all of them, I don't mind. It's not really that noticeable.

put it this way, you probally would have eventually noticed it. And since you now know, at least you know it's not a defect.

This is a killer....I got my SP replaced at Game recently and I noticed the shadow effect on white letters on black. Never noticed it on my first SP which I got the morning they were released in the UK. I am certain that there wasnt this effect on my first unit but its so pronounced on this one that reading some small text or looking at some graphics, is pretty tricky. Anyone know if the SPs were produced in batches and that we have a duff batch? I went back to Game today and out of 4 of their units (all colours), they all displayed this trait. Bummer....really cheesed off now!
Oh yes....on my SP, the ghosting is there whether the light is on or off!

I'm from the UK and bought my SP from 'Game' and mine seems to be working fine but maybe it only happens in certain games (games that have black on white text or the other way round) and I just dont have one of those games. I wouldn't surprise me if there are good and bad batches though - one of my mates release date PS2's was really dodgy(I got mine a month or so after and it's working fine), I'm not going to rush out and get any first batch of anything in the future just to be on the safe side.

i really don't think it's a big of a deal except when playing castlevania: aria of sorrow.  it can make reading the map a pain in the butt.  i find it difficult to tell the difference between the "shadow" and a section of the map where i haven't been yet.  (i had this same problem for circle of the moon; i skipped harmony of dissonance.)
