Nintendo's latest handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, has just launched in Japan. NWR Japan Correspondents were out on launch day and were fortunate enough  to find a few units. Check out the pictures below to see the unboxing of an Aqua Blue Nintendo 3DS, which will give you a chance to get an eyes-on with the unit itself, the AR cards, docking station, a new 3DS game case and more!

Here's the front of the box.

And here's the back.

Let's open it up!

Books. Books. Books.

The package for the AR cards.

The six AR cards included with the system.

OMG, it's right there!

The system and the the charging dock.

Comparison shot with DSi.

Layton!

Inside the case.

3DS cart and DS cart.

Docking station!

Charging it up.

Please be sure to check back with NWR for our 3DS impressions. Also, don't forget to check out James Charlton's 3DS launch experience!

Nice one! Looks just a tad bigger than the DSi, so it might still fit into my case. And I'll be interested to hear about Layton & The Mask of Miracle, then probably lament the fact that it's at least a year off from coming out anywhere else.
By the way, what's the deal with the little tab on the 3DS cartridge? Is that simply trying to physically distinguish it from the DS cartridge?

It's to prevent idiots from trying to put a 3DS card into a DS system. I think Reggie even said that (without the "idiot" part of coarse).

Yep. More than likely what TJ said. I could see someone trying to force a 3DS cart into a regular DS regardless. Hell, a few months ago at a used electronics store, I witnessed first a kid trying to cram an N64 cart into a Super Famicom. Him being a kid, whatever. What really got me was when one of the parents attempted to help the kid by trying to REALLY force it in there. Needless to say, it didn't go in.

I think, I'm being too harsh, though. Some people just don't understand gaming. There are going to be people out there that will probably do this with 3DS carts. I just hope I'm not around when it happens!!

Has anyone seen the inside of the Nintendogs + Cats cases?  Awesome!

Just out of curiosity, has anyone asked Nintendo why they decided to put the 3DS logo on the right side of game cases? The previous handheld systems all put it on the left side (outside of Japan).

Spoilers: The tab is where they store the 3D stuff.

I heard on 8-4 Play that they tried Mario 64DS with the slide pad and it actually worked. Can you confirm this at all?

Yes. BTW, now it's called the Circle Pad (although I prefer Slide Pad, the original name).

Just curious:  What's that 3D necklace looking thing next to Nintendogs on the picture with the Three games?

Pandara, that is actually a "3D cleaner" that was included with my preorder of Layton. It's just a simple screen cleaner. It does have some Layton logo and such on it, so I just might keep it in the package.

The blue 3DS looks slick in those pictures. Much better than the pics I see on retailer sites like Amazon. I'm starting to second guess my initial color choice.

Dad: You know what son, you don't take NO for an answer.
Son: but she didn't say no dad....
Dad: Then just jam it in there son, make it fit
Son: I already tried that dad, it just wouldn't go in.
Dad: Move aside son, let me show you how it's done...

I swear there is not a thread on this entire forum that can't end up exactly like this one.

it took 3 days for someone to respond to that comment, but in the end it was worth it.
