Title: Microsoft to support hackers
Post by: TJ Spyke on February 21, 2011, 05:36:11 PM
Well, sorta. According to BBC journalist Rory Cellan-Jones, Microsoft will start allow use of Kinect Software Development Kits (SDK) for personal use. A free of charge version for non-commercial use will be released this Spring, a commercial version will be released at a later date. There is speculation that this is because of how fast Kinect was hacked (about 1 week after it was released) and that Microsoft eventually said they were OK with it as long as it didn't harm the system.

Microsoft has been dealing with hackers for decades because they've been in the computer business since the late 1970s so they know how it is and it looks like they are wiser in how they are dealing with this than a certain other company is.

Sony is going to be doing this too: http://www.1up.com/news/sony-move-support-coming-pcs You'll note, of course, that such companies generally only "support hackers" when they're the underdog in a market.

Making a PC application that works with Kinect is not hacking. People keep referring to this stuff as "Kinect hacks" and that's not what's going on. Kinect *has NOT* been hacked, all they've done is written drives to support it for PCs, if you want to call that hacking, then they hacked their PCs.

You're wrong, Brandogg. This one time, I downloaded community written drivers for my old scanner because the company stopped supporting it years prior. So you see, I totally hacked that scanner! :P

What would I do with a Kinect Camera?....
That's a very good question.

Too simple.
I'd have it planted in my bedroom and recognize me in different situations thus prompting the appropriate music from my computer.
For example -- if I were walking into my room with a girl, the camera would recognize it and start playing some smooth RnB, like Isaac Hayes, automatically. When the action starts to heat up, it would start playing more modern RnB like Pretty Ricky or some ****. When I'm finished, it would play some instrumentals on low.
Not bad, right?

I think for the "lead-in" part, it should queue up "**** Her Gently" by Tenacious D.
