Title: Dead Space 2
Post by: Stogi on February 13, 2011, 06:10:02 PM
Anyone else have this game?

It's been scaring the **** out of me. I refuse to play it during the day and it's been a hell of an experience.

Don't know how it'll end but so far, it's been great.

How do you get scared by a game where all you do is slaughter waves after waves of bad guys? Dead Space might be a fun action horror game, but with the exception of the overall atmosphere, it's severely lacking in the horror department.

That's the key, though: the atmosphere.  It's the environments, the sounds, the gore, etc. that makes me tense while I'm playing it.  Personally, I don't think there is such a thing as being "scared" by a game.  You can be "surprised" or "startled" while playing a game that uses jump-scares and you can be "unnerved" while playing a game like Silent Hill that uses mood and psychology to get under the player's skin, but I can't think of a game that's actually "scared" me to the point where I no longer want to play.  If I stop playing, it's because I'm tired or want to do something else.

Horror games get me. Something about being the person in danger. It doesn't take much for me to fear for my life.

I just want a game like Dead Space 2 on the 3DS. I mean the idea of Necromorphs jumping off the screen adds an even bigger sense of suspense, and that is something the series is trying to capture better than survival horror games of the past.

The 3DS is going to steal enough potential console projects in the coming years (especially in Japan) as it is, so I'd rather this franchise stayed on the home consoles where it belongs.  Besides, horror really doesn't work in the portable format.  You have to play games like this in a dark room with a good sound system to get the full effect.

brood, I take it you have no interest in Resident Evil: Revelations? It looks like it will be a really good game. The DS has also had a couple of good horror games. And a good sound system helps, but it not as all needed to have a great experience with them.

I have some interest in it as a piece of technology, but it's going to be on 3DS so I'm probably not going to play it.  I have 3 home consoles right now.  I don't have the funds, time, or interest in putting money into a gaming experience I don't much care for by comparison.

I'd like to see the iPad Dead Space game come to the 3DS.

Dead Space 2 is amazing. I just beat it on Wednesday and the ending is great, although there are a lot of mysteries yet to solve. For example, what DOES "Convergence" mean? How does a Necromorph infestation originate? How is the Marker tied to Necromorphs? I assume these questions will be answered in the inevitable sequel (stay after the credits for an MGS moment). The gameplay is tighter and the environments are more diverse. I love it. I just started a New Game + last night and was happy to see that you can move up a difficulty level while keeping all your gear...and you get to find new Schematics the 2nd time around.

The multiplayer is pretty bland. I never feel like I have total control over the Necromorphs, but it's mindless fun. You level up pretty quickly, which is nice.

I would prefer the Ipad game to be a 3DSware title and have a fully built from the ground Dead Space game for the 3DS. As for the mystery of the convergence, it is refering to turning all of humanity into Necromorphs. Also, Zach, go watch the movie Dead Space Afermath. It is an animated CGI film that is a prequel of Dead Space 2 and sort of answers some questions while adding new ones.
