Bring action figures into a video game in Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is coming to consoles, handhelds, and more later this year with an augmented reality twist, as revealed by Activision right before Toy Fair next week.

The game will allow players to bring Spyro-themed action figures into the game by using a plastic stand, called a portal. After that, players can control the character in the game world. Each of the 32 action figures have different powers. For example, Spyro has fire breath and a horn charge.

No specific consoles have been mentioned, but the game will be released in a $70 starter kit that will include the game, three action figures, a portal, and trading cards.

Activision-owned Toys for Bob is the developer. A character designer from the Shrek series, two screenwriters from Toy Story, and composer Hans Zimmer are confirmed to be working on the game.

Spyro, the character originally created by Insomniac Games in 1998, was last seen in 2008's The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, which was a remnant of Sierra Entertainment before the Activision/Vivendi Universal merger.

More plastic crap from Activision? A standard Spyro game would've sufficed.

Was there a time when Spyro was popular and we might have cared?

They never actually owned the rights. They did create the series, but Universal Interactive owned the rights in the beginning (they became Vivendi Universal Games, then Vivendi Games, then merged with Activision to become Activision Blizzard).
