Title: Final Fantasy Characters Confirmed for Mario Sports Mix
Post by: NWR_pap64 on November 11, 2010, 02:50:41 PM

Five Final Fantasy characters and Mii support will be in the final version of the game.

The Japanese Mario Sports Mix website has been updated to reveal five new characters. The game is being developed by Square Enix, and the new characters come from the Final Fantasy series. The characters are Black Mage, White Mage, Ninja, Cactuar, and Moogle. Each character has their own play style. Moogle, Cactuar and Black Mage have been labeled as Tricky characters, White Mage is a Technique character, and Ninja is an All-Around character. These play styles affect the characters' performances.

This isn't the first time that the Mario franchise has crossed over with Square's franchises. Mario Hoops 3-on-3 for the DS, also developed by Square Enix, included the same Final Fantasy characters. Itadaki Street DS had the Mario characters interacting with Dragon Quest characters in a board game-like style.

In addition to the character reveal, the website confirms that Miis, All-Around characters, will be playable as well. The character section also has a blank space for a yet to be revealed character.

Mario Sports Mix is set to be released in Japan on November 25, 2010. No release date for the other regions has been confirmed.

Also of note, the bottom of the page says this:

"Dragon Quest characters © Armor Project/Bird Studio/Square-Enix"

Which leads me to believe the final question mark is a character from Dragon Quest.

This is really disappointing to me, I didn't like the Final Fantasy characters in Mario Hoops and I'm sure I'll hate them even more in this. There's still a possibility of more secret characters, as the Mario Hoops website revealed the Final Fantasy characters before the game was released but not the other secret ones. I'd think they'd at least want to match the number of characters in the DS game...

The Bit Block posted a video with most of the characters in action, including the FF and Mii characters.

Token Gestures like this piss me off.

They could have included something worth while like Cecil from FF 4, or Cloud from 7 or Geno from Mario RPG, but nope they add this crap instead

Geno would have been nice. But I don't think FFIV or FFVII characters would mesh well with the Mario universe.

Boy, do I not care about this game...
Any kind of crossover is fun, though.  And I agree: Not sure if the FF characters mentioned would mix too well.  Hopefully Square becomes open to allowing a Challenger or two into the next Smash Bros.

I would love to see Cloud go up gainst Mario in dodge ball.
