Future residents of a Spanish neighborhood have voted for the name of their street. The winning choice is "Avenida de Super Mario Bros". The celebration included a Mario mascot dancing to the violin and cello version of the Mario theme, while onlookers sported fake mustaches and interacted with the character. This coincides with the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. for the NES. Nintendo representatives were also at the event handing out presents to the attendees.

The Arcosur project is an initiative to give people in the age of 25 to 30 a new home. It will feature over 20,000 residences and its construction began last year. Mario's street will feature over a hundred homes and is nearly a kilometer long. The activity was done in order to encourage the government to finish the project by June of 2012.

Other video game characters and franchises, such as Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, and Space Invaders, will receive honors in the future.

I think it's weird how it is named after the game instead of the character.

Then why not Super Mario?

Because by calling it "Super Mario Bros." it honors Luigi as well as his brother Mario, and quite frankly that's a good thing because Luigi has been neglected a lot over the years. He only has like one game of his own, whereas Mario has dozens or something.
