Post by: NWR_Neal on October 12, 2010, 12:19:33 PM

The legendary Pokemon will be available through online download from October 15 to 30.

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company International are giving fans the opportunity to download Mew, the 151st Pokemon, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Pokemon Gold and Silver.

To get Mew, you need to connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and download the Pokemon using the Mystery Gift option. The Mew you will receive starts at level five with one move, Pound. He also comes in a Cherish Ball and has a Premier Ribbon.

The Pokemon will be available for download from October 15 to October 30.

Mew was last available in the United States in 2006 at Toys 'R' Us. Japan received a similar Mew in 2009 to mark their 10th anniversary of Gold and Silver.

I could use both Mew and Celebi myself.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to picking up Mew myself. I've never owned a legit one before. Celebi will probably be announced at some point; it has to. How else are players going to unlock the Giovanni event? Though, speaking of which, has Japan even gotten a Celebi event yet?

Japan had a Celebi event that coincided with the theatrical release of the 13th Pokemon movie (it actually unlocks something in Black and White).

Based on that, it'll probably be a Toys R Us event in February, with a set of special legendary gerbils up to just before Black and White have their NA release.

I only had Mew a few times back in Blue and Red. There was a glitch you could do to get one ingame. I have gotten a Mew from someone by trading it to me on my Platinum.
Never had Celebi before.

I can still remember completing my pokedex while trading at a friend's house and feeling like someone had destroyed a part of my soul when Professor oak didn't give me a Mew for my troubles. That was the event that started me down the dark road of cheating in games...

I remember back when Nintendo Power had a contest where you could win Mew.  Winners had to mail their cartridge in to get the Pokemon added to their save file.  12 years later, we're at the same place (Other M bug fix).

The worst part, MegaByte, was that legally Nintendo could not restrict the contest to people who owned the games (it was like when Fox did that Who Shot Mr. Burns contest, they couldn't restrict it to people who watched the show). This meant that if any of the 151 winners didn't own either Red or Blue, they would get something different.

I did manage to get a legit Mew through a online trade in Diamond (the person I got it from had a legit Mew and used the Emerald cloning trick to make copies of all the legendary Pokemon he had and traded them).

I will be happy to get this Mew since I need it in both Platinum and SoulSilver, but the times that Celebi has been legit available have been much rarer (the only times in English were a contest in Nintendo Power with 251 winners, and a 24 city tour in 2006 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the franchise). As it was already mentioned, the Celebi giveaway also unlocks a secret battle with Giovanni (with storyline revelations) and will unlock something in Black and White. I am just glad they resumed downloads after almost 2 months.

I am glad to finally get a Mew that I know is a 100% legit.  I am hoping it is resettable for natures and maybe.....gasp* shininess.

But I really want them to do Celebi.  Mainly for the extra story element. I hate having unlockable story elements and never getting the items to do it with. Like the flute for the Arceus battle in Platinum.

If the guy you got it from cloned his legit Mew and sent you the clone how is your Mew legit?

These legendary Pokemon seem like a clever idea in theory but in reality people just exploit bugs or use gameshark or whatever to get them.  And then with online trading anyone can then get one from those that exploited the game.  It's like a naive idea that would only work in a fantasy world... so par for the course for Nintendo I guess.

If they want to make a rare Pokemon make one that is really hard to get in the game and is IMMUNE to trades.  THAT would get people talking.

Given that Mewtwo is a laboratory creation based on Mew, all of this cloning talk is actually rather apt.

Well Nintendo has been passing off Mewtwo as a clone and he's pretty legit, right?

[/size]Haha greybrick I felt the same way.  Spent so much time between the ages of 7 and 9 trying to get 150 because one of my friends older cooler friends always let on that if you had 150 pokémon, you could talk to Bill and he would open up a secret area where Mew would be.  Also he said once you had 150, you could go to a certain area in the Clefary cave or w/e and use your item finder 150 times in one spot and after all that it would reveal a Clefary.  Lying bastard..

I guess what I meant was that the Mew wasn't hacked or anything. It was just a glitch in the game that let you duplicate any Pokemon. It would have the exact same features, so you wouldn't have to worry about it being banned from official tournaments (Nintendo has a method to detect hacked Pokemon).

Ian, they have made some Pokemon that couldn't be traded. They just choose not to. As for legendaries, they just need to stop so damn many. 48 of the 649 Pokemon are legendary, that almost 7.4% of all Pokemon. For those interested in stats, it breaks down like this by generation:

Generation I - 5/151 (3.31%)
Generation II - 6/100 (6%)
Generation III - 10/135 (7.4%)
Generation IV - 14/107 (13.08%)
Generation V - 13/156 (8.33%)

So you can see that Diamond/Pearl/Platinum were the worst offenders with nearly 1 out of every 8 Pokemon introduced being legendary.
