Post by: NWR_Neal on September 29, 2010, 06:43:13 AM

Mistwalker's new RPG has a release date in Japan.

Nintendo revealed that The Last Story, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi's latest directorial effort, is coming out in Japan on January 27, 2011.

The game will carry a B CERO rating. No release outside of Japan has been confirmed.

I rarely play rpg's but I was looking forward to this. It's been confirmed (http://"http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-01-13-the-last-story-not-heading-west") as not coming out outside of japan though. Massive shame. Now all I can hope for is that maybe by the time they would have finished localising it the Wii successor would almost be ready. [/grabbing at straws]

"No plans" doesn't mean it won't change. Alternatively I hope they'll let Rising Star handle it.

Might be too big of an undertaking for Rising Star.

I think that the only way The Last Story has a hope of making it to the Western markets as if Nintendo is behind it. Even then, it would be a prolonged endeavour - localising that much text and that much voice could take the game into 2012 if they aren't snappy, and, assessing the long-term situation, they might bottle it.

It would be a shame. Square RPGs aren't usually my cup of tea (I know this isn't Square, but the influences are clear to see). This, on the other hand, looks like something I could enjoy.

Meh, Rising Star has handled plenty of games that would seem problematic at first glance (look at this list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Star_Games)!). If in doubt just keep the voice acting as is and translate only the subtitles.

That's what Ignition Entertainment did when they published Muramasa: The Demon Blade in North America, I think they said it was to help keep the cost down. I prefer English voice acting, but I could put up with subtitles if it would increase the chances of the game being localized.

Hell, it's what Nintendo would have done. Come to think of it, have they ever brought a game with major voice acting to America?

Baten Kaitos Origins on the GameCube.  They farmed the localization out to a 3rd party, but they did bring it over.

If nintendo is not planning to bring this game to te west then they should atleat have the common courtesy to not play any of the videos of the gameplay and characters and pretend as if westerners do not know anything about the game.  ;)

I think Star Fox 64 should count, since at the time of release it had the most voicework in a game up to that point. It's probably a paltry amount compared to today, though...

Most voicework in a game? I hope you're not including PC in that, because the entire King's Quest series would like to have a word with you, if you are.

Correct, Ignition publisher it in North America (and Marvelous in Japan, I don't know about Europe).

Not my words, I think it was in an old issue of Guinness records, I don't remember the exact phrasing.
