Title: chick chick BOOM - our first WiiWare game
Post by: Boci on September 27, 2010, 10:31:12 AM
Hi guys,
my name is Bogac and I am the designer of tons of bits, a small game development team based in Germany. We finished developing our first WiiWare game a few weeks ago. The game is now at Nintendo waiting for approval.
I was following an interesting discussion in the staff blog about WiiWare games, including the quality, the chances and the problems in this field.
As we are right in the middle of this subject and a member suggested to start a thread about introducing our game, i thought that might be a good idea :) I apologize if it's not the right place for doing this.
So let's start with a few facts as an overview for those who are interested:
title: chick chick BOOM platform: WiiWare available for: Northamerica, Europe and Australia rating ESRB: 10+ (mild cartoon violence) players: 1-4 (coop, vs) official microsite (not finished yet, we will add content over the next days and weeks): www.chickchickboom.com (http://www.chickchickboom.com)
- Scenery: 2 teams with 5 chicks on each side of an arena.
- Goal: Knock out the opponent chicks.
- Offensive Moves: 7 different attacks with 2 upgrades for each attack, making a total of 21 unique attacks to choose from.
- Defense: Drawing lines in the arena to protect your chicks. For example you can block a falling weight by drawing a horizontal line above the chicks. The weight lands on the line and the chicks are safe.
- Strength: Multiplayer: can be played from 2-4 players in every combination (coop, vs, 2 vs 1 etc) Dynamics: line drawing and constantly jumping chicks creates a nice dynamic gameplay with new situations in each round
I don't want to overwhelm you with masses of text, so this should be sufficient for the beginning, though there are many details and other features which add depth and fun to the game (unlockable teams, 3 game modes, 3 arenas, bonuses etc ) ;)
I would be glad to hear some comments about the game (even if it's not playable currently and you can't find much on the website yet).
Thank you!

So based on that and some other stuff I just checked, she pretended to see some guys fighting so she could get on the news and used a very offensive ethnic slur. Apparently another flash in the pan Internet meme that no one will remember in a few years.

Hey the Wiki article says this game was available as a flash game where it was sponsored by Nintendo of Europe!

I'm glad to hear its 4 player multi, if it is pick up and play that helps too. I can try to get my household into the game if thats the case. It certainly sounds unique enough.

We worked on a first ingame video of the game over the last days and it will be up today or latest tomorrow. I will keep you informed for sure, as it is something which will show best what the game is about actually.
DAaaMan64 Yes, the game was available in a flash version 3 years back (and that's why we won't change the name, not because of a trivial video someone made - long time after chick chick BOOM was online ;) ).
And we are glad that you are looking forward to the multiplayer part as it is a very strong feature of the game in our eyes.
As soon as the video is available i will post it here ;)

Sounds promising. Can't wait to see more. I love little co-op/versus Wii games like this. They are great to add variety when you bring your Wii to a friends place.
PS- You posted it in the perfect place ;)

Oh yes - and we don't understand why coop is maybe the most underestimated feature for games at all...as it is a sweet variation for multiplayer :)

i don't get whats going on in that video.
are you trying to destroy them, save them or something else entirely?

You have to "kill" the opponent's chicks and save your own ;)
Maybe the transitions inbetween the scenes are confusing, we cut single scenes to one big video to show the general gameplay.

Looks interesting. Do you have any idea how much Nintendo will charge for it? We know that you can suggest to Nintendo how much you want to charge, but they have final say over how much all WiiWare games cost.

Ahh I get it now, I didn't realize it was being played Vs. (it's early)
edit: I watched it again, it all makes sense now. I was just half asleep earlier.

My friend and I watched the video and were pretty entertained by the last segment because it looks like a lot of stuff can be going on LOL. So I think it looks pretty cool.

DAaaMan64 Oh yes, if two or more skilled players play together it becomes demanding :) And if you have beginners playing it is much more settled.
TJ Spyke Regarding the price, as you said, Nintendo will have the final word, so i won't be able to tell anything about it for now...but i think you can expect something in the middle range.

Looks hectic! (That's a good thing.)
Will it have online multi-player or only local?
What will the single-player offering look like? Will there be a campaign mode or just single matches vs. the CPU? The single player mode looks like it will live and die by the computer AI. Hope it's up to the task. ;)

There is no Wi-Fi support. Multiplayer is played on 1 console.
The single player part consists of matches against the AI, of course you can adjust the difficulty of the AI. You can choose between 3 game modes. One of them is called the Pro Mode. This mode should be the most used for single player: Each killed chick on the opponent's side will be replaced by a new one. On your side your chicks won't be replaced, so if you lose all chicks, you lose the game. As a result the aim is to kill as many chicks as possible before your team is wiped out. Of course your records will be saved, this way the hunt for a high score will be a nice aim for each round.
The Pro Mode can also be played in coop with 2 players against the AI.

I watched the video you posted a few weeks ago, it looked really hectic (but in a good way). I hope Nintendo picks a reasonable price for the game though, a lot of indy games suffer because their price was higher than what a lot of people are willing to pay (for example, I may pay $5 for a game that looks interesting but I am not sure I would enjoy, if that same game was $10 I would just forget about it).

Any further info from Nintendo about when the North American release will be or is still the general "maybe Q4"? I would love to play the game.

The review at NintendoLife for Chick Chick Boom was fairly positive and the videos left a good impression, so I'll consider downloading it. Thanks for letting me know it existed.

I know Nintendo doesn't allow you to give exact numbers, but can you give us a general idea how well it is selling?

Sorry, but we are not allowed to say anything about this subject. We don't want to state anything - even if it would be vague or rough. Also it is in a very early stage to come up with conclusions anyway. I hope you understand this ;)
