Title: Pokemon Directors Want to 'Create a New Pokemon'
Post by: NWR_pap64 on September 14, 2010, 01:52:28 PM

Difference plays a major role in the latest Pokemon game.

In a recent Iwata Asks about Pokemon Black and White with directors Junichi Masuda and Ken Sugimori, they revealed the most important focus when creating the fifth generation in the Pokemon series was “to create a new Pokemon.”

With Black and White on the same system as Diamond and Pearl (the first time a Nintendo handheld has received two Pokemon generations), the team feared that people would claim that the games would be too similar to its DS predecessors. They began by looking at the some of the features in Diamond and Pearl and focus on the overall design of the new game. The objective was to take everything they knew about the game and “break it” in order to create a brand new Pokemon experience for the system.

The interview also revealed that Masuda and Sugimori have been partners for a long time, and for the development of this title they took on different roles. Masuda became the “idea man” while Sugimori was “the damper,” the man that controlled the ideas being presented during development.

The interview concludes with the idea that while Pokemon Black and White is different it retains enough familiar elements that made the franchise very popular around the world.

Pokemon Black and White is scheduled to be released in Japan on September 18, 2010. It is set for a 2011 release everywhere else.

Dikidik: One-Eyed Snake Pokemon
Bifurenis: Double-Headed Pokemon
Throbbicok: Angry Dragon Pokemon

How's that for different?

I'd like to see a Pokémon game with real-time combat. Something similar to Smash Brothers could probably work well. I've had my fill of the turn-based games, a type which I'm not fond of anyway, so that's the kind of thing which would get me interested in a Pokémon game.

After 12 years of cartoons and movies doing real time combat, I am sure kids would love to do that too. It would be a radical change though since you could do stuff like call back Pokemon before they could be hit, moves would be changed, etc.

I'm still waiting for a 3D console Pokemon.  I wanted that on the N64 and here we are two consoles later!  They sort of attempted that with Colosseum but that games just blew.  It lacked pretty much any enjoyable element of the Pokemon formula.

I lost interest in the series with Ruby/Sapphire.  I wanted Pokemon to take the next step and move into 3D and not only were they not giving me that but the 2D games on the GBA were actually going BACKWARDS from Gold/Silver.  Then they followed that up with REMAKES.  The GBA Pokemon games just utterly lack any ambition in their designs.  They're cookie-cutter and generic.

To me the move to 3D just seemed so damn obvious.  Every other Nintendo franchise has done it so why not Pokemon?  The game uses a top-down view like Zelda so converting it to 3D would be easy.  And since it uses menu fighting they don't even have to screw around with targetting or anything like that.  Just offering a full 3D world to discover Pokemon in seems like an easy recipe for success.  Plus it would naturally add some freshness to the series.

So it is nice to see the Pokemon guys wanting to reinvent things a bit as I see that as a very Nintendo way to approach sequels.  But, damn it, when do I get my 3D console Pokemon RPG that doesn't suck balls?  The concept is so old that when I think of it I still see it in blocky N64 graphics.  Isn't that sad?

I'd like to see a Pokémon game with real-time combat.

Isn't that exactly what Pokemon Rumble is?

Ian I bet Pokemon will finally move into the 3D realm with the 3DS. I still imagine sprites for some reason but with a huge 3D world. Though I doubt we will ever get a 3D version of the handheld games on any console.

Yeah, I think the reason they haven't done one in 3D is that they want the series to remain on handhelds. The DS can do 3D, but I'd rather they stay with sprites than use the kind of 3D you can do on the DS.

That's probably correct and that drives me nuts.  Why does this have to be portable only?  With the series being online it isn't even like people are being forced to meet in person to trade anymore.

Sadly with the Pokemon series it feels like Nintendo will only do the bare minimum to keep the series selling.  They tend to have much much lower standards of quality for Pokemon spin-offs then they do for their other franchises.  Plus we get the traditional double-dip third version of every game that tries to get a second purchase out of suckers.  I sometimes get the feeling the only reason the "real" Pokemon games are good is because Nintendo knows that something has to be to keep the franchise selling.

They won't make a decent console Pokemon RPG because they know they don't HAVE to.  The spin-off junk will sell good enough.

I think Nintendo is saving 3D pokemon until they have a sophisticated online structure that can handle an MMORPG.

I think Nintendo is waiting until their company's survival depends on them going all in with a MMO before we'll see a Pokemon MMO.

So basically, it's not happening in our lifetimes.

That's all it is. Being more specific, I'd like an RPG with real-time combat. I played the demo of that game, and it is a little more simple than I would have liked; it reminded me a lot of Gauntlet. It is okay, if it were 1,000 points I'd have probably downloaded it, but not for 1,500.
