Title: Place Yer Bets: Round 1: Super Mario All-Stars
Post by: UncleBob on September 08, 2010, 01:12:56 AM
Okay, here's the plan - For each round, anyone who jumps in will be awarded ten coins.  You can use these coins to bet toward any combination of bets offered.  After the round is over, you get to total up your coins (honor system) and will be allowed to use them (in addition to the additional ten coins) in the next round.

For Round One, the topic is Super Mario All-Stars.
Round one will last one month.

Odds - Outcome
3:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is not announced for a US release in the next month.
2:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced (in any form) for a US release in the next month.
3:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in disc form within the next month and will not include any extras.
4:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and will include the snazzy artbook but not the soundtrack.
5:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and will include the soundtrack but not the artbook.
6:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and will include both the soundtrack and artbook.
10:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and will include Super Mario World.
10:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and is released only as a normal Virtual Console title.
20:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and is a limited Club Nintendo item (either exclusive download or physical disc via mail-order).

Point of Clarification: When I say "announced for release", I mean an announcement is made within the next 30 days that the game is going to be released in the US - *NOT* that the game is going to come out within the next 30 days...

Any questions?

Does the month start from today's date or from the date of the Japanese announcement?

Today's date (i.e.: the date the odds were posted, in case someone looks at this thread a week from now).

6 on 6:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and will include both the soundtrack and artbook. (I think they will announce it at their fall retailer event)

3 on 4:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and will include the snazzy artbook but not the soundtrack.

1 on 3:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is not announced for a US release in the next month.

No option for the game to actually be NSMBWii-styled remakes with four-player?

For this round, unless another option shows up, I'll put all ten on this:10:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and will include Super Mario World.

100:1 - Super Mario All-Stars will be announced for a US release in the next month and will be NSMBWii styled with 4-player simultaneous support.

5 coins on:

4:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and will include the snazzy artbook but not the soundtrack.

Though I think we'll get a somewhat-inferior version of the artbook because, you know, we're not Japanese and therefore (apparently) don't deserve things as cool as they get.

And 5 coins on:

20:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and is a limited Club Nintendo item (either exclusive download or physical disc via mail-order).

I'll go one further and say that it will be next year's Club Nintendo Platinum Award.

Someone's gonna lose his coins. ;)

I should make a 1,000:1 that it'll be NSMB-ized with four players and Super Mario World.  Because that just wouldn't work. ;)

I'd go half and half if you did that.

I'd go half and half if you did that.

I won't let you waste your coins like that.
Super Mario World wouldn't work with NSMBWii style four-player.  Imagine one guy gets a cape power up, makes for a running start and takes off flying.  The other three players wouldn't be able to stay on the screen and they'd die.

By that logic they couldn't do regular AllStars that way either, because the same would be true of the raccoon tail/tanooki suit in Mario 3.

Post by: UncleBob on September 08, 2010, 07:11:28 PM
The tanooki suit doesn't move nearly as fast as the cape/feather.

Post by: NWR_insanolord on September 08, 2010, 07:14:06 PM
No, but it's fast enough to cause that same problem. Players without it wouldn't be able to keep up with someone who had it and was using it.
Title: Re: Place Yer Bets: Round 1: Super Mario All-Stars
Post by: TJ Spyke on September 08, 2010, 08:05:07 PM
Not really, you don't move all that fast with the Raccoon Suit. A player running would be able to keep up (at least in most levels). I don't see them doing that though.

Except Nintendo could redesign the cape and Tanooki abilities to make the game a little more functionable with four players.  Slow them down, make them more vertical, just about anything.  This wouldn't be a direct port with a new coat of paint, but rather a remake in a different engine.  Some stage editing and item editing would have to occur.

There is exactly no chance Nintendo's putting that much effort into this.

When you say "Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and is a limited Club Nintendo item (either exclusive download or physical disc via mail-order).", do you mean mail-order by anyone or only for club nintendo members?
Title: Re: Place Yer Bets: Round 1: Super Mario All-Stars

Only for Club Nintendo members as some kind of reward.

10 coins on no US release in the next month, please.

What's the benefit in betting before the final day of the month?  Why shouldn't I choose to wait until the last day to bet my coins?  If I did, then I'd know for certain whether or not the game had been announced for a US release.

How would that matter?  Speed isn't the problem, it's the whole flying thing.  As soon as the ground scrolls off the screen then everyone without the ability to fly is toast.  Unless they do a whole Harmony of Assets thing and just let the view zoom out as far as necessary.  ;D

It's a good thing no one in New Super Mario Bros. Wii could ever independently gain the propeller hat, I suppose.

If you go back and read developer interviews for NSMB Wii, you'll see them talk about how the reason the propellor suit works the way it does is to avoid that problem, and how that's the reason they didn't include a traditional flight powerup.

Well, obviously (and I didn't put this in the first post, but it's a "duh") - but the round ends within one month of the posting of the odds or as soon as the announcement is made.  If the announcement is made, say, tomorrow and you weren't planning on betting in the next week, then you're SOL.  Of course, if you're betting on no US release, then there's no benefit to not wait.

Ill put
3  - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in disc form within the next month and will not include any extras.
2 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and will include the snazzy artbook but not the soundtrack.

How many coins do we start with, 10?

If so I'll bet 3 on each of these:

3:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is not announced for a US release in the next month.
3:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in disc form within the next month and will not include any extras.
20:1 - Super Mario All-Stars for Wii is announced for a US release in the next month and is a limited Club Nintendo item (either exclusive download or physical disc via mail-order).

Last coin saved for next round.
