Title: Karma Thread: Wheel of Shame and Praise
Post by: King of Twitch on July 08, 2010, 11:58:38 PM
Did you find a post exceptionally good? Did someone act like a jerk?

Assuage your conscience and air out your karma laundry here.

Wait.. if someone posts something you find negative, you're supposed to draw more attention to the negative post?  hmmm..

Perhaps you could post it in a constructive, positive way.

Thatguy and Mop-it-up must be stopped; that kind of score can not be healthy for the forums.

August is smite thatguy/mo_pit_up month

So is this basically where we explain our reasoning for applauding or smiting people?

I applaud any post that makes me chuckle. BnM is responsible for a lot of those. Crimm gets lots of random applauds. I'll applaud reviewers when I really like their reviews.

Both Mop it up and Thatguy tend to make good posts so I reward them. Also, people that I feel are wrongfully getting over smitten I will applaud to counter the negativity. Like Ratchman.

I smite people usually when I feel they are bringing down a conversation. Not necessarily derailing it, but making me want to start ignoring the thread or something. I've smitten 'Reggie' a lot for that. I don't care if they are right or wrong, it just makes those threads less appealing to me. Spyke also on occasion when I feel he's being a little too nit-picky on technicalities.

I recall both smiting and applauding Pale, Dasmos, Perm, Kytim, Vudu and Lindy but not the reasons why. If someone says something rude to another person I'll smite them.

I applauded Zap and Stratos for their most recent posts in this thread.  Sorry, Perm, but something like 72% of your post isn't even yours.

I figured they were just applauding each other on a regular basis.  They are both PixlBit writers, after all.

I'm disappointed in this topic. I thought it was going to involve some sort of game where the winners received a point.

is smote the past tense for smite?

I thought it would be smited, but I'm no english major and I'm not gonna look it up on wikipedia/dictionary.com/google, copy/paste the results and pretend I knew that all along.

Smitten is a different form of it, not applicable to this situation. Smote was the correct, or at least a correct, form for how I used the word, at least according to the Oxford English Dictionary built into my computer.

I'm starting to worry.. at what point do the points start going to your head? When will I start thinking, "Oh yeaa!! I've been applauded by 30 of my co-forumers in a completely arbitrary points system; I should go write my memoirs, after I'm done admiring myself in the mirror of course"?

As a rule, I don't smite people for their opinions, only the way they express them, but every rule has an exception. The particular exception I'm referring to is that I just smote TJ Spyke for being negative about Conan. He probably did something somewhere recently deserving to be smitten anyway.

I love how in the matter of three days, I've gone from having a score of 14 to now FOUR. What's up, guys? It's obviously because of my recent posts on liking Metroid: Other M -- which is NO reason to smite me.  Sheesh. Grow up.

I've in no way told anyone they're ignorant or stupid for disagreeing with my opinions on the game... I'm just getting a lot of smite for really liking the game -- all aspects of it even.  That's not really right of whoever's smiting me for this. Like I said, grow up.

Smitten for making broad assumptions about why people smote you, and for the irony of getting all bent out of shape about it and then telling others to "grow up."

But see, that's the thing, buddy. I'm not whining about my score. I could care less about that crap. It's the notion that I'm being docked for something because of someone else being childish. I'll say it again. Grow up. I don't know how much simpler I can make it.

I've been a fantastic forum member here since way back in the PlanetN2000 days, and having to put up with kids and immaturity isn't something I care to mess with. I like having great conversation with people that are interested in the same things I am -- video games. And I especially love conversation where I can hear other's opposing viewpoints... I feel that it opens my eyes to new things in this world, but when a childish mentality comes rolling in, it kind of muddles up the situation. And I just don't care for that.

The only person being childish here is the one who's taking the score at all seriously. People smiting you (which I never did until you came in here complaining, by the way) doesn't mean anything. Contrary to what thatguy may tell you, your score has absolutely no effect on what you can do here. If you don't like it, just ignore it; I don't think anyone here judges posters by their score, but they will begin to dislike you if you put as much stock in it as you seem to be right now.

I have a pretty good idea exactly when and why I began accruing negative score. Then my score began to plummet, and I wasn't truly sure who I was annoying, possibly everyone (and thanks to the jerk that copies "possibly everyone" and writes "this" underneath), so the one thing I don't like about the Karma system is the anonymity of it all.

At first I must admit that I was annoyed, but the other day I actually got worried when my score jumped from -7 to -4. Now look where I am!

Some people must be pretty behind on the Newscast if they didn't hear the cricket one until the other day. Either that, or the developers of Happy Birthday Mart are here undercover.

I was replying because you said I was being negative on Conan, I wasn't. As I replied in the other thread, the link you provided only talked about one specific demographic and not total ratings.
Title: Re: Karma Thread: Wheel of Shame and Praise
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on September 06, 2010, 09:02:10 PM
I never said anything about you being negative (already messing up the facts once again -it's even in the post you quoted-) and you should reply to me and my comments which were supported by the article I linked to. All you responded to was the title of the article(which was in the url) which is more than smite worthy when you attempt to argue a point that was never even made and continue that same argument even after being corrected.

But it's not the first time you've done stuff like that and likely not the last.
Title: Re: Karma Thread: Wheel of Shame and Praise
Post by: TJ Spyke on September 06, 2010, 09:09:42 PM
I did read the article you linked to. The whole point was moot anyways, the article was about new episodes of Conan got higher ratings among adults 18-49 than re-runs of Leno. I replied that it is not a big deal if a new episode of a show gets better ratings than a re-run of another show (especially among talk shows since those usually don't do good in re-runs). I question why that site focuses only on one specific demographic rather than overall ratings (where I think Leno did easily beat Conan since Leno's audience tends to be older).

You just assumed I didn't read it first, not the first time you did that (and you know the old saying about people who assume things).

Yeah, it does seem like something I'd do, but I'm only here for Rachtman's delicious meltdown

I just read this whole thread to try and understand what this point system was about, and i want to smite all of NWR and just not come back. There hasn't been much going on since my return, and if this is where all the energy has gone to well.. why bother?

Yeah it is kinda silly.

It is just a number under your username. It isn't really that big a deal.  Some people base to much on the number. In a way I think it is just a way to pick on people for silly reasons. If people don't know why they are applauded or smited then how can they improve as a forum member.  Also some people smite or applaud posts from weeks back so while someone may be having a good week they may be being smited for something in the last week so they might be confused as to why they are smited.

Just my 2 cents.

Turns out the key to a high point total is to not contribute to any meaningful discussion in any meaningful way.

There aren't enough people with high scores for that to be true. [/smite bait]

There were but then this whole 'points war' broke out. No other explanation for why so many people dropped so fast.

So you're arguing that you yourself, who had a fairly high score, never contribute anything meaningful, and that's just not reflected in the score because of the recent mass-smiting?

I think he's saying a lot of people have stopped contributing meaningful things, but that they're not getting a whole bunch of points.  This isn't true, though.  Take a look at Bill.  He stopped contributing in meaningful ways quite a long time ago, and last I checked, he had 40+ points!

It just proves I'm right.

He'd have more than that, but Maxi's only allowed to applaud him once an hour.

I still do it. Though scores will probably now begin to level out and better reflect posting since people aren't jumping all over the feature like a hyena on a dead carcass.

Your mom.  And I think you know why.

Actually, I'm fairly free with both applauds and smites, so I'm not sure exactly what that one was.  What time zone are you in?  That might help.

I don't want to make a habit of revealing this kind of thing, since it kind of defeats the purpose, but it was probably this guy (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=35623.msg696635#msg696635).  For keeping an annoying argument going, but mostly for coming back to rekindle it in an even more annoying way after I thought it was over.

I also applauded UncleBob's post after that for giving me a laugh.
