Title: E3 2010 Day 2 - Sony (& everyone except Nintendo) Press Conference Thread
Post by: broodwars on June 14, 2010, 10:39:10 PM
I know this thread is early, but I thought I'd get this prepared for tomorrow so I'm not rushing to get it done in the morning. Yes, tomorrow, June 15th, is the day we've all been waiting for: Sony's E3 2010 Press Conference, starting at 3:00 PM EST (12:00 PM PST).
I'll update this post with other Live Streams as they are posted here. Looking forward to the discussion as we catch our first glimpses of gaming's future. (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) Here's hoping we have a great show, or at least one dramatically better than the Microsoft and Ubisoft ones we saw today. ;) I'm actually looking forward to what we see with the Move software, as I doubt they can possibly be any worse than Microsoft's Kinect demonstrations. Plus, given that the Dead Space 2 guys teased us that they'll be part of the Sony Press Conference as well, odds are we'll probably get to see Dead Space 2 with Move controls, something I'm looking forward to.

*notices the re-name Uncle Bob did to the Thread Title.*
Do we have other Press Conferences tomorrow I didn't know about? I searched Gametrailers and IGN, and they didn't bring up any others, which I thought was weird because I was expecting to find a Sega Press Conference.

What about Square? Are they having a press conference? I want The World Ends With You to make a comeback.
If they are having one, I couldn't find it when I went looking for streaming Press Conferences.

Ok, after the chaos that was the Nintendo Press Conference thread, I'm just putting this warning out right now: please do not troll this thread with constant joke post spamming. That's what Twitter's for. ;) The moderators already warned us in the Nintendo thread that they would lock threads if that kept up, and there's no need to be an asshole. Let's just be polite and enjoy the Sony Press Conference.
Just play nice, everyone! Especially you, Pro!

Overall, my impression of the Sony Press Conference is that it was a solid outing, if not particularly exciting like Nintendo's was (then again, Sony hurt their case by leaking many of these games weeks ago). I'll pardon the way that Kevin Butler's speech just completely stopped the show because it was pretty awesome, but in general ther was just way too much talking and too little live demo-ing (to be fair, I had this problem with Nintendo, too). I'm thrilled to see Sly return for the Sly Cooper Collection, along with Ratchet and the others in that "Heroes" game. Unfortunately, that was really my only big game, and it's a collection of PS2 games. On the Move side, I thought Sony did an excellent job demonstrating the Move and unlike Microsoft they actually gave out pricing info. There also look to be a decent selection of games out of the gate supporting Move, including several gimmies like Killzone 3, Resident Evil 5, and Heavy Rain. The PSP's a Lost Cause, though, and everything about it at this show was pointless.
In general, I think Sony looked strong going into this event, and they still look strong coming out of it. They lacked the surprises and swiftness of Nintendo's event, but it was a fine show in its own right that solidifies the PS3 as the worthy runner-up to the Wii. Seriously, though...NO LAST GUARDIAN and NO TEAM ICO COLLECTION? What the hell?!

So because of work I couldn't watch Sony's presentation but the vibe I'm getting is that unlike MS they actually showed like games and such for the Move? Is that a good assessment?
With the PS3 catching up on the Xbox 360 and Move actually sounding competent I think MS is in a pretty bad spot. Sony is likely going to take over at number 2. The PS3 is just on a roll.
Sounds like Nintendo had the best show though.

Okay, pretend you viewed it through a black & white screen. How does it come across then?
This greys and browns stuff is as juvenile as crapping on graphics in general. How could a game like Killzone possibly have bright rainbow colours? It would look as stupid as Mario with greys and browns! It should just be about what fits the game.

Nothing on God of War: Ghost of Sparta? Motherf*cker.... That was the one thing I wanted from Sony at E3. What the f*ck do I own all this Sony hardware for?
Move is a waste. $80 for Wii remote, nunchuck, and Motion Plus is rough, but acceptable because... that's the console's main controller. $80 for a peripheral 4 years into a console's life is a stab in the groin. I own a PS3 and a PSP so I'm not just Sony hating here. It's stupid and as a PS3 owner, I'm not biting. I don't care, especially since there likely will not be a single Move only game or at least one people care about. All Move titles will be Move optional and always Dual Shock 3 ready. And that's why Move is going to fail regardless of how good the controller is or may be. It's hard to get people to care about something when the market is cornered by a competitor and you're so late to the party.

In all fairness to Sony, how many Nintendo peripherals have we seen so far that have been used for a couple games and then quickly kicked to the curb?
Move is too expensive, but unlike Kinect (which, since it doesn't have a price right now, doesn't look like it'll be cheap) not prohibitively expensive and we already know it will see a fair amount of support with real gamers' games. I'm still on the fence about buying Move, and frankly I think Sony missed an opportunity by not convincing the Dead Space 2 folks to show off a Move-centric demo of that game (which would have sold me). Still, I'm optimistic about that peripheral coming out of this show.
As for Ghost of Sparta, it's a God of War game. Take a wild guess what it will look and play like. They did show a teaser trailer, though.

Title: Re: E3 2010 Day 2 - Sony (& everyone except Nintendo) Press Conference Thread
Post by: Adrock on June 15, 2010, 06:49:18 PM
I don't count the Wii Wheel or the Wii Zapper because they're just shells. The only major peripherals Nintendo released for the Wii so far are the Classic Controller, Motion Plus, the Balance Board, all of which Nintendo supports with peripheral specific software (I include VC titles). None have been kicked to the curb as of yet. My point with Move is that most titles will also use the Dual Shock 3 and the ones that don't are probably available on the Wii in some way, shape, or form. Thus, I'm given no reason to shell $80 for the peripheral plus the Playstation Eye. That was never the point of the console.
And I know what to expect from Ghost of Sparta, doesn't mean I still don't want to see it.

Ok, fair enough. Still, it was $30, not $80. In fact, I bought it new for $6. It's main problem was that the hardware can't support it. The Wii doesn't have enough memory to adequately support it. This is also coupled with the fact that Nintendo Wi-Fi is total ass.

Well, considering the RE 5 Gold Edition was specifically mentioned by name in the list of games that would get Move compatibility, I definitely think we're looking at a patch or DLC. Which is awesome because that game needs RE4 Wii controls.

They already confirmed at the Press Conference that it's getting Move support.
And Halbred, as far as I know the only difference between the Gold and normal editions are the presence of the DLC features. I'd be very surprised if Capcom required you to buy the Gold Edition to use the Move patch, considering they didn't require you to buy the Gold Edition to get the DLC chapters.

I'm not that interested in the Killzone series but Killzone 3 kind of shows you the difference in "audience awareness" between Sony and Nintendo. What has everyone asked for since DAY ONE that the Wii was shown? An FPS. That's easily the most requested thing. Metroid Prime 3 just created more interest (and it's not an FPS). People bought a **** game like Red Steel just because they liked the concept. A nothing game like The Conduit gets hyped to hell. And yet Nintendo has just sat on their hands and focuses their attention on Wii Music and replacing buttons with waggle in their core games. Sony makes their motion control and, BOOM, first thing they do is an FPS.
Sony has looked like a dumb jackass this gen with their overpricing of the PS3 and the whole PSP mess. But they got this right. Nintendo has had years to make that FPS game everyone wanted and have pissed it away. Core gamers associated motion control with casual focused junk. MS continues that trend. Sony gives everyone the game they wanted years ago right off the bat. And frankly I think that makes Nintendo look really stupid and just enforces their casual-focused image.

That's actually what I really liked about the Sony Press Conferences of these past couple years: for all their screw-ups, Sony has shown that they actually understand their audience, the people who actually bought PS3s and (more importantly) the people in the audience. The language, the game selection, and the presentation are all geared towards targeting that audience. When Kevin Butler went up on stage today, sure it was grandstanding and he wasn't particularly saying anything Nintendo hasn't been saying for years, but the way he presented it was more in line with core gamers and the gaming culture. You listen to the crowd, and they're clearly into it. Sometimes I get the feeling during Nintendo's presentations that I'm being talked down to (though not this year), but I don't usually get that from Sony. Sony will make stupid mistakes and tends to have pacing issues with their event, but they do know how to command a room.

There is no way just the controller is gonna cost that much though. That must be for the controller and the camera and would look more like this in pricing
Move Controller and Camera - $59.99 Additional Move Controller - $29.99 Move Navigation Controller - $19.99 -------------------------------------- Complete 1 player Move Experience - $109.97
It's not less than the $100 they said before, but it's pretty close, until you include tax.
I had Move priced $10 too high based on the report, but I wasn't too far off it seems.

The vibe I get is what I assumed Nintendo was like during the N64. I figured Nintendo had made one big mistake with going with cartridges that had handcuffed them for the rest of that generation, but that they otherwise had a pretty good idea what they were doing. Then the Gamecube came out and I found that that was totally wrong.
But with Sony I can see why they were number one. It seems like they did a big screw up with the PS3 price and that has restricted them. But they otherwise seem to know what they're doing. They've got a good first party lineup, they've got great third party support and Move doesn't sound like a certain failure like Kinect is. They've got momentum and seem to be doing the absolute best that they could with the PS3's price goof-up. You get the feeling that these guys are going to be number one again someday. Being a PS3 owner doesn't feel like being the owner of a lame duck last place console.
But they don't know portables. Holy **** do they not know portables.

I sat in Sony's conference and thought it was great! Killzone in 3D was pretty cool, but once the montage went on I had mixed feelings about it. I think 3D is cool and maybe its just me, but there is an almost blurry(for lack of a better word) side affect to it.
Seeing GT5 like that just made it difficult to comprehend certain parts of video. It could have been because different games were just being shown left and right my eye's did not adjust accordingly. All I know is I couldn't wear those glasses through the entire game because of that. Though I did not have this problem with the Killzone demo.

I actually think it was more likely they saw the reaction from Microsoft's conference and they pulled some of the more "family-friendly" PS Move stuff. I can't imagine they had enough time to make any major changes after the Nintendo conference - even more so when the actual conference didn't show off much about the 3DS - it was after the conference and everyone got to play with it that we actually heard about it.

*sorry, I originally meant to post this here, but mistakenly put it in the RE4 topic. Reposting...*
First off, release detail: The Move controls will be added to Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition as a free downloadable update, set to drop right when the Move controllers are released. And no, the standard version of Resident Evil 5 will not get the update. It seems like this is an easy way to move more copies of their Gold Edition. To be fair, fans of the series and the fifth game shouldn't pass on it anyway.
So...yeah. If you didn't buy the Gold Edition, no Move support for you. *facepalm*

I agree as well. So because I bought the original release and bought the two added expansion DLC releases I'm just not good enough for Move support? This is crap. I guess I'm not getting a Move then. If I could add it to my current game, I was going to get a Move. Since I can't, I'm not going to buy a Move. I hope Sony strongarms them.

I don't own the game; I'd be buying it for this, so it doesn't really affect me, but I still think that that is complete bullshit.

Do you think Sony initially planned more on the PSP, but saw the 3DS and decided not promote a less awesome system and pulled it at the last minute?
I wouldn't think so. The marketing campaign was just about the PSP. If there was a PSP2, they would've had PSP2 marketing set to go. Plus, we all knew about the 3DS ahead of time, we just hadn't seen it. Sony probably just couldn't make anything to go against it yet, so they went with Marcus.

And Marcus stepped his game up.
