Title: I'm thinking of getting either a PS3 or Xbox360...
Post by: MysticGohan on June 09, 2010, 07:16:12 PM
The above says it all, I'm looking at something to complement to play alongside my Wii, I'm looking forward to Transformers war for Cybertron, I have a PC so Xbox 360 doesn't seem that appealing,
and PS3's all come with built in harddrives, and I have HDTV's to take advantage of the 720p and 1080p res. and Bluray is another feature that would be nice, as I have an netflix account, question... Can PS3 do HD streaming from Netflix? I know 360 does.

So what advice can anyone give?

I don't think Netflix is HD on the PS3, and you require a Netflix program disc, but will all probably change when the Netflix exclusive agreement with Microsoft ends late this year.

You can also rent HD movies and TV shows from PSN, but that can get pricey.

ShyGuy is mistaken; Netflix is HD on PS3.  Also, for what it's worth, Hulu is rumored to be coming to 360 in the near future.  No word on a PS3 version (although I'm sure it's technically possible).

Best thing to do would be to look at the exclusives for both systems and base your decision on that.  Does either Natal or Move get you excited?

Probably be best to wait until E3--I'm sure there will be lots of announcements for both systems.

Most talk of Hulu on the 360 (at least that I've seen) indicates that it will require a subscription fee.

A subscription fee would be enough to make me not buy a 360.

Definitely wait until E3 before getting either console, but what kind of games are you into and is online play important to you?  Are you willing to possibly handle the nightmare that is the Red Ring of Death?

On a side note, definitely wait for reviews before getting War for Cybertron.  I just have no faith that that game is going to be good.

Just get PlayOn, you can already watch many streaming websites via that. On any console.

I want something that's going to work reliably and doesn't get the red ring of death or nuke itself, most of the games on Xbox seem to be on PC as well. Can anyone tell me which has the best exclusives so far and which will be the better choice in the long haul? I know PS3 is ahead in Japan compared to 360, I would think that would garner more support from devs there.

I'm not sure if Move or Natal does anything for me, seems late in the game to copy the Wii. However I'm really into Action/Adventure Games, RPGs, Shooters, sims stuff like that.

I hear Splatter House is coming to PS3, I liked playing the originals on Sega Genesis. I also interested in MGS4 and Transformers War for Cybertron, Which version of Transformers is better? Or is there a difference between console/PC?

The PS3 looks good to me for the Blu ray and what not, but it comes down to which system has more support and exclusives. I wouldn't mind a 360, but I want no problems and I want s vers with a HDD.

The one at Gamestop sold me an Arcade vers, pre ownd and it had no HDD to my dismay, so that thing went back. I'll have $464 give or take to spend, I was thinking of getting the PS3 slim with the 120GB hdd.

However it comes down to which system delivers the better content, and is Gold for 360 live worth it?

Really? I hear IGN says it's quite fun with Multiplayer  and the single campaign is shaping up, it's like gears of war, which should be better than previous games based on Transformers.

When it comes to licensed games, I've found it's better to expect very little and be completely blown away than to expect anything and then be disappointed.  Transformers may be due an Arkham Asylum, but I'm not sure this one will be it.  I'm also tempering my enthusiasm because this game is relying on nostalgia for Transformers G1, a show I particularly hate outside a few basic characters.  I'll be curious to see if good reviews tout excellent gameplay or storytelling, or if it boils down to "oh!  Look at the explosions!" and "hey, there's Soundwave!  And OMFG it's Starscream!"

If you don't count games that are on no other console but are available on PC as 360-exclusive, the PS3 has far and away the better lineup of exclusives. Even if you count those games for the 360, I might still go with the PS3, but it would be a lot closer.

Wait for E3 then revisit this thread.

after MS & Sony reveal what they have planned for the next 6 months, then you will have a better idea of which one you want even though it sounds like yo already want the one I would have recommended anyway (PS3).

Also the PS3 either does have or is about to have a 250GB version coming out and Xbox Live will always cost you money.

My decision boiled down to reliability.  The PS3 has no Red Ring of Death so that's why I picked it.  Ten years ago if you told me I would pick a SONY console because it's more reliable I would have laughed at the thought.  Funny how things go.

Being the Japanese console, and with me being more interested in Japanese games than American ones, I figured the PS3 would be better for attracting Japanese developers.  Honestly most of the game I was, and am interested in, are multiplatform.  I just needed some other console besides a Wii to get access to them.  Though so far one of my favourite purchases has been LittleBigPlanet which is a PS3 exclusive.  Sony actually has a really strong first party lineup right now.

But the two consoles are so similar that I think you'll be content with either decision.  Either way there will be something you miss out on but you want something to compliment the Wii and either console will accomplish that.

Sup BnM, Yeah PS3 looks good, but what can it really do with the HDD? Does it help with load times? What uses does it have? I never dealt with a console that has a built in hard drive, I guess it's mainly for music and games?

When the developers program a game to take full advantage of the PS3's capabilities, the HDD installs can help greatly with loading times.  When they don't...well...you get the PS3 version of Bayonetta.  :P:

As for its purpose, the PS3's HDD is used for pretty much the same thing as the 360's: it's a big storage bin for game installs, saved game, music files, and video files.

Game installs? So in a sense like a PC? Does that mean that some games once installed won't need the disc? or am I off? :p
Title: Re: I'm thinking of getting either a PS3 or Xbox360...

No, you still need the disc. Some PS3 games do a tedious install, then an update when you first put in the disc. Or if you get them off PSN, they will download, then you have to click on them to install them.

The RRoD has been taken care of, the Xbox 360 is pretty reliable now. If you don't care about system exclusives, I would recommend a Xbox 360 because the controller is vastly superior.

Considering I'm still reading complaints from 360 owners about their consoles Red Ringing, even after their 2nd or 3rd time sending the machine in to be repaired/replaced, I'd say the problem has not been taken care of.  Let's say for the moment that it actually was, though.  Why on Earth should anyone believe Microsoft's claims that they've fixed it, given that it wasn't the last couple of times they said they fixed the problem?

That's the big problem with the 360: Microsoft released a POS right out of the gate, and now they have a major PR perception that I don' t know if they'll ever shake that they make defective consoles.  I  want to buy a 360 for a handful of exclusives (Tales of Vesperia [the PS3 version isn't being localized], Alan Wake, the two Mass Effects, and a handful of XBLA games), but I don't want to go through the Russian Roulette that is the 360's hardware failure rate.

That would be kinda ridiculous since I'm sure alot of people don't have the room to put an entire Xbox under their TV where the camera can see them.

They've accounted for that; it's going to be so big that you set your TV on top of it and it replaces your entertainment center.

I have the hardest time thinking about buying a new system this late in the generation.  To me you have 2 more years of new games and the old games.  Is that worth it yeah, maybe...but at the same time the next generation is so close...it is a hard sell for me, because I have limited funds in general.

who knows when the next gen will row out, seems rather pointless to come out with new controls and then a new system that'll just eat each other, I'd say it'll be another year or two, depends.

I'm not sure we're that close to a new generation. It's in both Sony's and Microsofts best interests to keep this one going as long as they can, because launching new platforms would mean them losing money for a while, whereas right now they're both profitable. Nintendo launching new hardware might force them to upgrade, but the Wii's sales are far too good right now for Nintendo to be moving on, especially with the 3DS coming soon; I doubt they want to launch two systems that close to each other.

I'm predicting that this is the last big Xmas for Wii and something new will be introduced next year.

Analyst agree.

I don't necessarily disagree with this statement, but, considering what analysts have predicted in the past, using them to back up your argument is akin to quoting sales numbers from VGChartz.

that's the biggest difference.

And some Analyst don't just blindly throw darts, some are reasonable with their predictions and base them in reality. You don't hear much about those guys because there is no controversy.

I said within 2 years.  I can see 2012 being the year of new hardware...and I can actually see new hardware releasing potentially before 2012 Christmas.  I actually think March or April would be a good time to launch a new system.  Yes, it would not have the Christmas hype, but if you had 8-9 months lead time on sales to build hype and get more games to people before the big Christmas hype that could be good.

And yes, Wii sales are still good, but they are going to start dropping off, and it would be a good idea to ready a new console sooner since Nintendo could use its momentum rather than losing it potentially to aging hardware and Sony and Microsoft.

Are there any good exclusives out or coming for ps3.

Sony has the following big first party titles:
Resistance 1 & 2
Uncharted 1 & 2
Killzone 2
God of War 3
LittleBigPlanet
Ratchet & Clank: Future (2 games)
Infamous
ModNation Racers

With third party titles there is less to pick from but Valkria Chronicles and Metal Gear Solid 4 are two major exclusives.  For PS3 exclusives you're mostly looking at first party titles.

Regarding next gen I think Sony and MS would be stupid to go up another level when they overreached to begin with.  They should let their motion control be their next gen.  Nintendo needs to match the hardware of their competitors with a Wii 2 at some point but I doubt they would top it.  Sony and MS do not have to worry about Nintendo gaining a hardware advantage with a new console.  I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo cheaped out and didn't even match the PS3.

I really don't understand the hype with that game.  Seemingly everything about it reeks of what I hate in RPGs games in general, especially the difficulty.

From Ian's list, I'd probably remove the first Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet.  Both are merely average experiences, one has a dramatically better sequel that doesn't require playing the first game, and the other is looking to get an ambitious sequel.  I'm also not that fond of the first Ratchet & Clank Future game or Infamous, though in the later's case that's probably my low tolerance for Open World games.

I definitely second the recommendation for Valkyria Chronicles, though.  And although it's not an exclusive and I know it's an odd pick, I recommend the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark (which is the only version that isn't a POS) for a fun sub-8 hour romp.

And what is Demon's Soul about?

Couldn't comment on Metal Gear.  I've only played Twin Snakes, I didn't particularly like it, and what I played of the MGS4 demo wasn't promising.  It has its fans, though.

As for Blu Ray, yes it is a big step up from DVD in terms of gaming.  Just case in point, observe the Final Fantasy XIII versions: 1 Blu Ray disc for PS3, 3 DVDs for 360 and the 360 version looks noticeably inferior (though to be fair, Square-Enix supposedly used sub-par coding for the 360 version).  As for movies and whatnot, your mileage will vary.  To me, what looks the best on Blu Ray is animation, which looks gorgeous on the format due to the richer colors.  CG animation in particular benefits because you also don't have compression artifacts.  The recent Star Wars Clone Wars - Season 1 and Fullmetal Alchemist - Part 1 Blu Ray sets look stunning, for example.  I pretty much don't buy animation DVDs anymore, sticking to Blu Ray.  For Live Action stuff, there is a difference but it's not incredibly noticeable unless you're a videophile.

And of course even Blu Ray can't help a series or movie if the source material hasn't been kept in good shape and cleaned up for the format.

Fun to play but has a stupid and embarassing story that interupts the gameplay every five minutes.  So typical Metal Gear Solid. ;)  If you enjoyed the other three games then you'll enjoy MGS4.  As dumb as the story is, it ties up numerous loose ends, references all the other games and provides a clear end to the saga.  And its flaws are all things that if they bothered you, you would have given up on Metal Gear Solid long ago.  I question why the people who complain about the cutscenes being too long are playing a Metal Gear Solid game in the first place.  It has too many references to the other games though to be worth playing if you have not beaten the other three.  You'll be lost if you're not familiar with the material.

Someone who is knowledgable of the subject should list which version of notable third party games is considered superior and why.  broodwars pretty much stated that the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII is the one to get.  So how about this for other titles?

Right, sounds really good. I really like animation movie/Anime and etc.

Heh, the less discs I have to change out, the better.

I wish Capcom would come out with a new Breath of Fire game, it's been awhile, I-III were my favorites, especially II.

Agreed! I liked to know what other titles are better on PS3, I'm thinking of getting that, sounds like the better bet of the 2. I'm looking forward to Zelda Wii and what goodies for PS3, I just hope the motion whatever it's called doesn't continue to look like a dildo :p

You'd better get used to what the Move looks like if you want to get one, because it's not changing design.

About MGS4, rent it with the possibility of purchasing it if you like it.
I still think MGS Twin Snakes is a lot better than MGS4.

You will notice a clear difference between BluRay and DVD, specially with the newer media that was created in HD. The PS3 is however a great DVD upscaling device.

I suggest you get a PS3 after E3, which hopefully they will announce the PS3/Move bundle.

What were the devs thinking? lol

right, I see they have a new 250GB slim model out for $349 with choice of bundle either with Gamestop or Walmart.

There is another price drop being rumored for the PS3, likely for the lower GB models and then a repricing for a higher GB model to bundle with the Move.

So 250GB model could go down to $299 and w/ Move bundled it could be $349 or something like that, so I definitely wouldn't make a move until after E3 is over.

Right BnM, do you think that such a move will be likely? And will the price drop be immediate after E3? How likely is this Rumor?

Sony just pushed 2 new boards through the FCC, one has some new wireless stuff and the other one supposedly had some new chipset in it.

A new chipset could be for the Move bundle to get the price down even further, so I would definitely wait on a purchase right now.

I still have my Black Wii in the box ready to either ship to Nintendo or return to the store depending on what Nintendo decides to do about my ship account issue and/or what they announce at E3.

If the rumors are true that Move is going to be released in July, then you won't have to wait that long.

Off topic, I noticed when watching HD streaming from Netflix that where it says HD it'll say when you scroll over it, not playing  HD  and under it is a box that can be checked marked allow HD, is it really HD and what HD does netflix allow? 720p/1080p? My monitor supports full 1080p HD widescreen.

It will be as noteworthy as the developers can make it be, but the premise of it is just like a Wii Remote with Wii motion Plus. If you are already happy with the Wii then I guess Move, or Natal ain't gonna do ya much except that you can play those games in HD, but then you might as well wait for Nintendo's next home console which will most likely output in HD and come with some uber controller. Even if you are not that interested in getting a Move bundle you're better off waiting to see what happens at E3 just like BnM recommends.

Been talking to Bill, he recommends 360 in comparison to ps3, the 360 gets better 3rd party and has better 1st party games.

What'cha think?
Title: Re: I'm thinking of getting either a PS3 or Xbox360...

It is beyond ludicrous to argue that the 360 has better 1st party games than the PS3. It probably gets a bit better 3rd party support, but the vast majority of 3rd party games come to both of them.
Title: Re: I'm thinking of getting either a PS3 or Xbox360...
Post by: MysticGohan on June 12, 2010, 05:59:09 PM
This is what Bill had to say

"bluray is a complete non-issue when it comes to multiplatform games they actually look worse on ps3 because 360 is the lead sku,
360 - Fable II, Halo 3, Infinite Undiscovery, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2

PS3 - 3D Dot Heroes, Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles
mulitplatform games tend to be better on 360
i don't give a crap about sony's first party games
so if you're interested in those, then ps3 makes more sense, i have more 360 games than ps3 games, but again, that's because i usually go 360 when getting a multiplatform game, and i prefer MS' first party games (mostly just Lionhead and Fable)"

Bill Aurion "You know ya love him" has interesting insight, Still I'm on the fence between the two systems.

The Mass Effect games are on PC, so I don't know if they should fully count toward this. Killzone 2 is a better game than Halo 3. Uncharted 2 is amazing, and there's nothing even close to it on the 360. I haven't played it yet, but God of War III got a lot of praise, and nobody does that type of game better, and there are a lot of other good first party PS3 games.

Personally, if I had to choose one, I'd go with the 360, but that's only because of Perfect Dark Arcade.

PS3 sounds like it'll be cheaper than 360 as I wouldn't need gold membership to play online let alone buying the wireless adapter and what not.

Anyone know who has the best deal going on? I'll have a maximum of $464 to spend, I'd like to get a system with a game etc.

Thanks for the heads up BnM, wow 500GB, that's hella lot. Would that mean a Price drop as well? Would it be worth it to get the 500GB? I can't imagine what I would do with that space, my pc has 1TB and I'm barely use half lol.

BnM what do you believe would be the outcome to come from this?

Sony must be planning on getting serious about digital distribution on the PS3, because there's no other reason you'd ever need close to 500 GB.

Also, I hope there's going to be a way to get 802.11n on older model PS3s, via some kind of dingle or something, because I have an N network and it would be nice if my PS3 could take advantage of it.

Well, you wait. E3 Happens.

Now you either like the new Xbox360 redesign (black, slimmer, quieter, WiFi built in and a 250GB HDD) and are interested in Kinect and the Wii games that have been revealed so you decide to purchase that for probably around $399 with everything included (360, Kinect & a game)

Or you like Sony's new sku with massive HDD space (PS & PS2 game downloads on PSN?) and improved wifi (b/g/n), are very interested in Move and the Wii games that have been announced for that so you decide to purchase that instead for maybe $399 with everything included (PS3, Move & a game)

or 3DS is so bad ass, you decide to spend your money on that (<$200 or bust ;D ) and hold off till Xmas next year since Nintendo may have just teased a Wii2H3D for next years E3 reveal. So you purchase your 3DS with 6 games and end up wearing glasses anyway since you've gone cross-eyed with excitement.

your choice ;)

How long do you think this Gen has left? And whats your money on?

My intuition tells me that we have 2-3 years left on this hardware cycle, and the generation "war" will end as follows: Nintendo far ahead in 1st (they just have too big a lead), followed by Sony, and then Microsoft narrowly behind Sony.

As for what I'd recommend, MysticGohan, you obviously want to buy a PS3.  You just keep asking us for reasons to buy one and keep showing interest in PS3 titles, so just find a good deal for one after E3 and get one.

I would wait until after E3 and weigh that decision.
those are 3 different things that could happen and there's no way of me knowing all the details that would matter to me or you.

I'm betting on 3DS, but if I were to choose another system, I would be eyeing PS3 closer than the 360 mostly because I think Kinect is gonna gonna flop hard and MS is gonna want to fix it's black eye with a new system before it leaves a permanent mark. With a PS3, atleast you get free online a powerful HTPC and a Bluray player whether you buy into Move or not (which I believe is a better wiimote in most ways except for when pointing at the screen).

The PS3 will always be useful regardless of PSN/XBL support and for that kind of money, I'm gonna want it to serve a secondary function long past it's games support. and since I think that Nintendo is gonna keep their 5 year cycle tradition intact(Wii2 in 2011), I'm sure that Sony & MS are gonna try and follow suit before 2012 is over (MS may even try to rush a launch in 2011 if Kinect belly flops as hard as most of us are expecting) depending on where Wii2 specs fall.

I think it's a safe bet that Microsoft will launch their next console before Sony launches theirs, even if Kinect doesn't flop.

HTPC is a Home Theater PC

it's easy to hook up to your TV and you can stream content from your computer or the internet from your PC onto your PS3 and watch it from your couch.
