Title: Sega Announces Sonic Colors for the Wii.
Post by: BlkPaladin on May 26, 2010, 01:02:11 PM
With Sonic 4 being pushed back I guess they Sega was thoughful enough to scrape up some more sonic road kill. (sarcasm) Judging from the video they finally figured out that people didn't want another storybook Sonic game and decided for another shot at an Adventure type title.

Wait, that additional abilities by using aliens thing sounds almost Metroidy.
Hm, come to think of it... an important part of Sonic is learning level layouts to traverse them efficiently and exploring the different routes and whatnot, having a Metroid-like game with backtracking for a purpose could actually work out.

Yeah I also read a little more it sound like a little bit of galaxy mixed in. So I guess they figure if they can beat another 3D game out of the franchise, they will borrow heavily from others. But it does work. So I'm going with a wait and see...

SEGA, Where the HELL is Sonic Chronicles 2? I do not want to be bothered with such frivalties. I want SC 2 either for the wii, or DS and give it to me as soon as you can.

Well I was OK with the storybook series. With a 2D and 3D Sonic coming out presumably at the same time this can make everybody happy. We have had 2D Mario and 3D Mario this gen on the Wii so why not do the same with Sonic.

Didn't see this topic up, I guess I'll talk about it here as well.
Seeing Tails fly right by Sonic like gives me the impression he will have an important role again. I sure hope it means 2 players in the way that we all want. I much rather see a platformer like this than some RPG thats for sure. I just know sooner or later things will get better for Sonic, already the actual quality of the games have been getting better bug wise. They've screwed up so much that Sonic Team is now due for a good game.

I'll hang out on the smart portion of the Sonic Cycle (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sonic-cycle) until I hear multiple reviews stating that this game will do everything short of give me sexual favours.
Also, shaking my head at Nintendo Power if this is the game they hyped in the Metroid:Other M cover issue...

Hahaha, it just turned out it was.
Of course it shouldn't really be a surprise by now, Nintendo Power is run by Sonic fanboys. Every time a new Sonic game is released it usually gets it's highest review from Nintendo Power. Pretty much every Sonic game, no matter how terrible it is has gotten a good review from Nintendo Power.

Wii version of Sonic Unleashed got an 8 from them. That's too ****ing nice. Way too ****ing nice.
You think that's bad, Shadow the Hedgehog got an 8 from Nintendo Power as well. Anyone that tells me Shadow the Hedghog is a great game that deserved to be bought at launch for $50, needs to be put in an insane asylum.

When did Nintendo Power become such a reputable source for reviews that giving out high scores to lousy Sonic games is so surprising? :confused; They've always been an incredibly biased rag that dolls out praise and high scores to the highest buyer (or Nintendo-produced game).

Considering they're no longer owned by Nintendo (thank you Future) they do have a little bit more objectivity.
Of course, someone at Sonic Team probably has pics of the EIC *censored*ing a Sonic doll. That's about the only reason I can think of where Shadow the Hedgehog gets an 8.

rumor - developed by the 'storybook' team (Secret Rings, Black Knight)
So it's not the usual Sonic Team misfits (more of a dev house than an individual dev team?), just the adventurous bunch that operates from Sonic Team's closet.

Basically SatBK >>>>>>>>> every 3-D Sonic sans Sonic Adventure.

I wonder if Sega will ever realize that people only really care about the Sonic running levels. They could probably get away with selling a shorter game, without all the Warehog-esque padding, for $30.

That seems to be the logic behind Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and its episodic nature.

I meant 3D Sonic, hence the Warehog/padding reference.

And let's not forget who thinks up this padding: the grand-master of Sonic sholck, Takashi Iizuka. Ignore the fact he did NiGHTS into dreams and pay attention to the fact he was one of the driving forces behind Sonic R.

Hands-on impressions are positive. Sega says the colors get unlocked as you progress (they aren't mandatory for beating the levels) so you're encouraged to go back and explore previous levels, I suppose that means they've given up on mandatory gameplay lengthening schemes and instead are going for encouraging replays.

I was at a local book store and saw a write up in NP about the Wii version (the DS version gets some mention). The Colors team at Sega is a mix of both the Secret Rings and Black Knight teams, according to Iizuka.
So are we in the green zone of the Sonic Cycle right now?

So according to some (wait for it...) SEGA PR guy, Colors is for the kiddies while the 4th game is for the (wait for it!) hard-core crowd.
Forget the source, but hori shitto SEGA, when you have a good game on your hands staring Sonic, don't **** it up with insulting the people who may buy it (aka me).

I like seeing Sonic just put to a complete stop. It's nice watching that guy trying to figure out how to blast all the way up that structure. Rather then a constant run run never stop mechanic, though thats fun it shouldn't be everywhere in every stage.

The latest entry to the list of games with a special edition that includes plastic models = Sonic Colours in Europe and Australia.
Why Sega thinks this will help to drive sales I do not know. Nevertheless, I am very mildly anticipating this game, because it could be fun. Not willing to give it more than that for now.
Title: Re: Sega Announces Sonic Colors for the Wii.

At least the figure is poseable, that's a good step above the usual special edition tat.
The goal of special editions is not to drive sales but to wring more money out of the hardcore section of your fanbase. Note how it's aimed at Europe and Australia, areas with a large Sonic fanbase.

I like how Tails is seen everywhere in the story but not playable. Oh well, but this game really does look like it will be worth getting. 2 players actually looks like fun as well. Looks like Sega did a good job listening to my critique at E3. I guess you could say that I and I alone saved Sonic. Good for me.
If it bombs I blame Sega for listening to the fans, including me.
This co-op could actually be the start of real Sonic/Tails Co-op in the future. My dream co-op Mario and DK games have become reality, heres hoping for Sonic!

No wonder this game looks like it'll actually be good.
"From a general game design perspective, in recent years we've been able to introduce Sonic to new fans, a lot of the Nintendo/Mario fans, and because of that, we've made changes to the design, and we've designed things in Sonic Colours that we think will really appeal to people who are unfamiliar with the Sonic brand and the Sonic gameplay. So from that perspective we hope that fans of Mario will really be able to enjoy playing as Sonic in Sonic Colours."
It sounds like Sega FINALLY looked at why the 3D Mario games work so great and realized it was possible to make a great 3D Sonic as well.

Sega put out the latest trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAadsAR8rH4) a little while ago. It features the remaining Wisp power-ups that were not playable at any of the media events (Purple Frenzy, Blue Block, Green Hover and Pink Spike).
Looking snazzy, Sonic Colours. Then again, there have been bad Sonic games that looked good in pre-release trailers, so I'm still taking all this with a pinch of salt. I certainly won't write it off though, because I'm liking the range of Wisps available, and if the level design accommodates them well, we may have an interesting Sonic game this year, which I've heard STH4 is not so much.
Title: Sega has new sonic strategy
Post by: Caterkiller on October 27, 2010, 02:03:26 AM
SEGA (http://games.ign.com/objects/025/025059.html) doesn't want to make any more bad Sonic games.
That's the point SEGA (http://games.ign.com/objects/025/025059.html) West CEO Mike Hayes (http://stars.ign.com/objects/002/002559.html), who oversees North America and European development, drove home during an interview with IGN last week. He said the company is making sure it will listen to what fans want going forward.
"It's all part of a general strategy with Sonic where we are passionate about getting Sonic back up to the quality levels we've had historically," Hayes explained. "We've gone through a major segmentation analysis of Sonic and where it would appeal to the different fans."
Haynes explained the company is driving its Sonic brand at different audiences for the different platforms. The company released Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I (http://wii.ign.com/objects/031/031345.html) on numerous platforms earlier this month. It will also release Sonic Colors (http://wii.ign.com/objects/075/075624.html) for Wii and DS and Sonic Free Riders for Kinect in November.
"On the Wii and Nintendo DS, we're driving those brands to the younger audience," he said. "We have our Mario and Sonic brands that are very mass-market. Then we have our brands where we will focus on our SEGA and Sonic loyalists and we made the decision there to listen to what their feedback is."
"We delayed the launch of Sonic 4 to make sure we got that as right as we could and we're still listening because as we progress the series we want to make sure we get that right."
Hayes explained the SEGA is even approaching development of its Sonic titles differently depending on the target audience.
"Where I think we provide Sonic for a younger audience, there we have to take innovation ourselves and try and understand and work out what will be the best game for a more 8 to 12 year old audience," he said. "For the core fans, we definitely want to hear what they have to say about Sonic."
"It's just such a vital brand for us, and the most important thing is to get relevant quality, and that's what we're going to spend a lot of time and money doing over the next three or more years to get right."
Sonic 4 is apparently off to a hot start. When asked about the game's overall sales, Hayes did not provide exact unit figures, but said it's tracking a little higher than expected.
"It's absolutely bang on where we wanted it to be on all the formats," he explained.
"This is the whole part of us moving Sonic up the scale to a much better quality product. Fingers crossed; it's actually tracking a little bit ahead of where we expected it to be."
Sonic Colors hits Wii and DS on November 16. Sonic Free Riders will be available on November 4.
Well this is something I am certainly glad to read. Who knows if it will really mean anything in the future. But I love that hey have the balls to come out and say they don't want to make bad Sonic games anymore.
Title: Re: Sega Announces Sonic Colors for the Wii.
Post by: that Baby guy on October 27, 2010, 02:25:39 AM
The delayed Sonic 4 release was convoluted, though. They redid two or three stages, the rest were already done well before they announced the delay. How many months do three stages take? I'm not trying to be negative, but Sega's marketing keeps referencing that delay, and if anything it was a punishment to fans because someone videotaped something off partnernet and shared it with the world. There's no way they spent anywhere near five or so months on Sonic 4 from that point back in March or April.

"On the Wii and Nintendo DS, we're driving those brands to a younger audience ... work out what will be the best game for an 8 to 12 year old audience."
Precarious statement. Although it isn't always the case, when a developer says something like this, it is often their more subtle way of telling you a game will be easy. It is a shame that the 'child-friendly' tag carries such a connotation, because it doesn't have to be that way. I'm sure I am not the only one who played and completed some punishing games at that age - it is not required for a game to be easy to appeal to a child. The accessibility factor isn't a problem; in fact, it's much preferable for a game to be simple to understand and control. But it should still put up a good fight along the way.

NP Review: 9.0
Good news is that this one doesn't suffer from 'KEEP RUNNING AND RUN SOME MORE' problem that Sonic Rush levels had, and is surprisingly meaty. Bad news is that boss battles are recycled.
This is Nintendo Power though, so let's wait for NWR/PixlBit/Aussie Nintendo impressions.

Did anyone else actually play Shadow the Hedgehog? It's the closest thing we've had to the stages everyone liked in Sonic Adventure 2, ever. Oh, and there's more of those stages than in Sonic Adventure 2. I'm not saying 8.0 is the right score, but it's leagues ahead of a lot of other Sonic games out there!
Title: Re: Sega Announces Sonic Colors for the Wii.
Post by: Peachylala on November 01, 2010, 11:37:13 PM
I haven't suffered through Shadow the Hedgehog so I can't really make an opinion, but to me personally the 3-D Sonic games go like this:
Sonic Adventure: Did a good job in introducing Sonic into 3-D. Knuckles levels DIDN'T SUCK. Big and his missions need to die. Amy and E-Gamma's levels are so-so. Sonic Adventure 2: Sonic/Shadow levels got better, but the camera got a bit worse for wear (but the final stage for Shadow... holy clusterfuck). Eggman/Tails levels were... boring. Knuckles/Rouge go rid of the previous search system and replaced it with something more frustrating. It's biggest asset is Rouge's jiggle physics. (yeah) Sonic Heroes: Long levels like S3&K, but had some unique elements. Tag team system was also unique. What happened? **** load of game breaking bugs and having the play through the game with more then one team to beat it. Sonic '06 Well **** you too Sega. Sonic and the Secret Rings: What's this? A game where you play as just Sonic? On-rails platforming harkening back to the 2-D days? A story that was unique?! A side-kick that didn't suck ass?! Eggman is a prince?!! Poor level progression, bull-**** EXP system and insane as hell missions. Camera SUCKED TOO. Sonic and the Black Knight: Gone is the bullshit level progression and insane missions! Still flawed? In some places. But was it leagues better then '06? Absolutely. Sonic Unleashed:HI I'M CHIP WANT SOME CHOCOLATE?
Did anyone else actually play Shadow the Hedgehog? It's the closest thing we've had to the stages everyone liked in Sonic Adventure 2, ever. Oh, and there's more of those stages than in Sonic Adventure 2. I'm not saying 8.0 is the right score, but it's leagues ahead of a lot of other Sonic games out there!
Will we see a review on PixlBit for Shadow then? ;)

After I get through reviews for RUSE, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, and potentially Sonic Colors, as well as do a PixlChatter on Kirby and Wario Land: Shake It, perhaps?
Regardless, at least from what I've seen and played of Sonic Colors, it had potential. I'm not saying it's a 9/10, I haven't played it that much, but it could be up there somewhere around that.
Title: Re: Sega Announces Sonic Colors for the Wii.
Post by: Luigi Dude on November 02, 2010, 11:11:33 AM
For the people complaining about the Nintendo Power review, don't worry. The guy who did the review posted on Neo GAF and said that he didn't review the previous Sonic games. He said if he had reviewed Secret Rings it would have gotten a 7 and he would have given Unleashed a 6.5. He never played Black Knight so he didn't comment on that.
So the 9 from Nintendo Power actually has a lot of weight this time since it's comming from someone who actually wasn't a fan of the previous Sonic games and thinks that Colors is a huge upgrade and he even said it actually has the quality of the Genesis Sonics.
So yeah, I'd say there's good reason to be excited about the game this time.

IGN loved it... Supposedly it's 11 hours long, how the **** does that work?
Link to the review (http://wii.ign.com/articles/113/1132902p1.html)
Very pleasantly surprised. A length of 11 hours is definitely unexpected... I suppose Sonic Team finally realised that if they take their time, they can make lots of levels and don't have to pad it out with rubbish filler material. Certain other choice phrases were also extremely encouraging. "...some fantastic level design that will test even the most dedicated fan of platformers." "...one of the best looking games on Wii..." "...the music is universally great." (In a Sonic game? Holy moley!)
You know, I can never have too many platformers. I'll be sure to get this in the not-too-distant future.

Colours is our pure Sonic gaming experience. That's had some high scores. It's also the highest pre-selling pure Sonic title we've had ever. That's a good indication. With the quality of the game, we're confident of that. That's our pure platforming Sonic.
We have some announcements in the early part of next year that will further support and add to this strategy. There will be two of three big Sonic announcements in the early part of next calendar year.
I have only beaten the first world of this game and it is enjoyable so far. Not enough to truely gage the game. Only thing is sometimes I feel like there is too much stimulation in the first couple stages. Along with the camera being zoomed way out I'm just not quite as clear on my surroundings as i'd like to be.

One of those yet-to-be-announced games should be a Tails game, he's got to be more neglected than Luigi at this point.

There's a rumor going around that we'll see a Mario and Sonic game next year that isn't based on the Olympics. It's on some mildly major Sonic fansite that isn't Sonic Retro. I don't recall which one, though.

Oh how I would love both of those things to happen. As long as Nintendo really holds Sega's hand through the process.

What's hilarious is that they already did it two times, and they were considered better Sonic games before Black Knight and Colors.

Just finished up the first world and started in on the desert planet. Giant donuts with chocolate frosting is weird but interesting. Liking the game so far. Got it as a gift for Christmas but hadn't played it until today. I love the speed of the game. Reminds me of older sonics where running was key. I wish I could play this with just the Wii remote or the classic controller but I guess using the alien powers wouldn't be possible since you have to shake the remote. Can't say just yet if I could put a score on it. Just that it's enjoyable at the moment. Very easy as well. I beat the first boss in 41 seconds but then again don't think I would have wanted to do it for two or more minutes.
