Title: Descent is coming to WiiWare!!!

I don't know why it's taking 3rd parties to realize the potential of the Wii and it's wiimote but this is one of many many games that are long over due.
Interplay seems keen to continue to ruin my relationships, announcing that the spatially-disorienting FPS classic is yet another of their older properties coming to WiiWare. Currently slated for a Fall 2010 release, the title is being developed by G1M2, who worked on Metal Slug Anthology, among others. I can see using a Wii remote to play this being pretty effective. Having a control that you physically tilt instead of the keyboard might be nice and could help with the nausea many people suffered at the hands of this dizzying game.
This is exciting to me since I loved the very disorienting game from way back in the day on my PC and I just mentioned it as a game I would love to see come to the 3DS. Maybe this will be the introduction of the series to millions of Wii gamers and we will get another full length sequel(or a 3D version) on the 3DS.

Your not going find many that played that series, still have Descent 3 installed on my PC :). It's a shame they don't make space fighers at much as they used too.

Man, it was hell to find enough axises to properly control that game on a mouse and keyboard (I actually set up a two handed keyboard config just to account for all axises), the Wiimote and Nunchuk has more axis controls than KB&mouse.

I just installed Descent 3 on my netbook the other day! Using the Wiimote could be an intriguing novelty.

I played a game called Forsaken for Nintendo 64 that looks a lot like this. Is it related?
They both play pretty similarly to each other. But are two completely different series from different studios. Decent came first though. Must earlier. It was a popular one from the DOS days in the post-Doom explosion of games on the PC.

I've never played this game, but if I understand it correctly I've come up with a control scheme that uses just the nunchuk by itself.

Not enough buttons. In my opinion an N64 controller does not have enough buttons either. It was tough enough playing Forsaken on the N64. I'm hoping for CC support but they could possibly do it with a Mote-Chuck combo.

You have five main buttons in Descent if you manage to map all movement to directional inputs: Shoot gun, launch missile, shoot flare, change gun, change missile (you can complicate those by allowing cycling in multiple directions). Okay, there's also the map screen. Descent 2 added a lot of stuff like the after burner, headlight, guide bot, energy transfer, etc but IIRC none of that was in Descent 1.

Nice, I hadn't heard about this game before reading this thread. I played a bit of the first couple Descent games and thought they were pretty cool. It would be interesting to play this kind of game with MotionPlus.

Parallax is the developer, not the technology. Only the powerups are billboards, all the enemies and environments are full 3D.

that would explain why it looks so great, i was really thinking that it was just a sweet looking use of that technology, i didnt even notice that was the name of the developer. I was looking at a video of 2 and it looked way more dooomy

Hopefully it will perform well enough that we will get the sequels. Imagine eventually getting the Free Space games.

I'm excited. The first Descent was great and I got a flight stick just for it (that helped so much). The second game was even better. Unfortunately, the third game kept crashing my PC and I never got to play it like I wanted. I even bought a newer force feedback control stick for it too. Maybe this'll lead to Descent 4 and the Free Space stuff. I know the Wii can easily handle all three games. It seems like wiimote/nunchuk controls would work great for this type of game.

I skipped 2 but did try 3 and had the same crashing issue so I never got far in it.

Ah, never released. Pity. It also turns out that FreeSpace is not quite related to the Descent series.

It's made by Volition, one of the two branches Parallax split into so it's semi-related. I believe Red Faction also has some references to Descent and Saints Row 2 has references to Red Faction... Would be nice if we could get Volition to work on a space game again but it seems THQ demands gangsters and space marines.

According to the Wikipedia entry the code from Descent 4 was used to make Red Faction but they are officially not connected. Red Faction was originally conceived as a prequel to Descent and FreeSpace was unofficially conceived as a sequel where you originally were looking for the character from the Descent series but that was removed as well but that story was removed for some reason.
