Post by: Halbred on April 06, 2010, 09:12:01 PM
Check out this awesome trailer!

Having seen that, I'm reminded of an old Penny Arcade comic:

"It'll be so awesome when it doesn't get here."

Well that is just a gorgeous thing there. One more thing to put on the DSiware wish list if I ever get one of those.

I'm excited for it. Looks really nice.

Shantae was like a mix of Castlevania 2, Zelda 2, and Metroid.

It was the greatest GBC game nobody bought.

It's a shame, but not surprising since it came out a full year after the Game Boy Advance was released in North America.

Spank me for not having a DSi. Spank me extra hard... for mommy.

Shantae won't spank you, but she can dance like a sex goddess.

The debut trailer of the game has been released, it looks pretty good.

Haven't we seen this elsewhere already? I'm pretty sure that's not a new trailer.

Do we have a confirmed release date yet?

No. No release date.

That same trailer was actually posted here nearly a month ago. I thought it was familiar.

I assumed it was new because GameTrailers just posted that video today.

I did and it's probably the best Dsiware game because it's fun and can't be recreated on another system. I've never played a Shantae game before so I'm excited for this one.

Downloading it this very moment.

Downloaded it the second it came online. Played it for 20 minutes during my morning med routine. It's REALLY good. The spritework is incredible.

The attention to detail in regards to animations, background, and character art is amazing. I was hooked the moment I started playing it.

I'm 200 DSi Points short. Motherfuc....

Does anyone have any suggestions to use up the extra points I'll be buying today? I'm thinking about downloading Mighty Flip Champs and Soul of Darkness which I heard is similar to Castlevania. Is Bomberman Blitz worth it? In particular, how does multiplayer work? My brother has a DS Lite, can we play wirelessly using just my download?

EDIT: I think I found my 4 games: Mighty Flip Champs, Shantae, Dark Void Zero, and Soul of Darkness. Should be 3000 DSiWare points. I still have the 1000 from the DSi launch.

I own all of those.

Mighty Flip Champs is a fun puzzle game, but it gets hard fast.  Don't expect to finish it.  :)
Dark Void Zero is fun, but it's only about an hour long and there's not much reason to replay it.
Soul of Darkness is a pretty fun, if somewhat janky, Castlevania clone.  Lots of fun, but nothing you haven't seen before (especially if you're played Order of Eclisia, which it most strongly resembles).

Your list is missing Pictobits.  It's the best Art Style game on the DSi (and probably the best one period).  If you like puzzle games you should strongly consider it.  Also, the music is sublime.

Shantae is completely riddled with cartoon/sprite bewbage. Not saying I don't appreciate that part of the female anatomy, but good lord do you really need bouncing cartoon boobs on what look to be children in your platformers?

Yes, I know. Zach's Game of the Year, 2010.

Thanks, Vudu. I passed on Dark Void Zero. I still have 500 points left.

Yes.

Yes, I know. Zach's Game of the Year, 2010.

So is it good or bad that this isn't a 3DS game?

I'm going to say good because anyone who looked over Shantae in the past has less to invest to prove the worth of the series and long time fans can grab it for only a fraction of what a cartridge release would cost and finally Way Forward can get more fan support to actually finance a 3DS release.
At least that's what I'm hoping. I haven't downloaded it yet, but I will later this week when I can get more points.

It's a little expensive for a DSiWare game (1200 points), I wonder if they will impact potential sales.

Did you notice how her booty shakes when she's crouched lol.

So I'm in the third dungeon. It's a great game, although the map is functionally useless. At the very least, it should show the location of caves and whether you've completed them or not. As it stands, half my playtime has been spent re-locating and completing caves or finding out that I've already completed them.

PROTIPS: You can burn wooden blockades with Shantae's fire attack. That may seem obvious, but just be aware of it. You'll also need Shantae's triple-fire upgrade and her Monkey Dash to get through another cave. The Monkey Dash and Elephant Stomp are needed to access the third dungeon. The elephant stomp can be used to destroy overhead stone blocks. I highly recommend saving up your Magic Jams to buy her fully upgraded hair whip.

Heh, the European approach is to redeem some stars for Nintendo points.

I am not one for positive hyperbole, but I can't think of a DS platformer that I have enjoyed more than the one hour of Shantae I have played. Maybe I need to get out more, play some Hatsworth.

I just played it and I really really like it. Having never played Shantae before I found that getting used to how the levels navigate took a short time and it would have been nice to mark up the map like in Spirit Tracks. I'm still at the beginning so I haven't done anything very amazing yet, but the art and music is great. Fans can get the official soundtrack here: http://www.biglionmusic.com/general/shantae-riskys-revenge-ost
Name yer price.

Go to the far right of the frontmost layer of the forest, you meet your zombie friend and get the dog from her

Did I mention I beat the game with 100% completion a few nights ago? 'Cause I did.

Helluva ride. I'm going to make a Secret Cave FAQ so that nobody has to get lost looking for the Secret Caves like I did.

Hey Hal, what am I supposed to do with the 4 keys that I got in the 3rd dungeon.

This had me stuck for awhile too. Remember the door that opened when you made the eyeballs look the same way? Well, you can also open the door by making the eyes look OPPOSITE ways. Also, remember the rooms with the eyes that open/close? They change based on whether both eyes are open or closed, too. So explore every possibility. You'll eventually find two halves of a skull key which you use on the locked skull door.

I swear I wrote a review for this game and sent it to be edited, but it hasn't...been...done yet.

Thanks, Halbred. I knew I could be missing some sort of combination with the eye statues, but I just thought I could be missing something else not related to them that would let me continue on.

Recommendation: Speed-run the game. Don't worry about item collection rate. Just try to get under 2 hours. Nice little Metroid nod is your reward.
