Title: New Transformers Game Receives Different Name on Wii
Post by: NWR_Neal on April 06, 2010, 02:50:07 AM
Transformers: Cybertron Adventures will be the name of the Wii version of the upcoming Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 title, Transformers: War for Cybertron.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=22861

The ESRB revealed a new Transformers game on Wii called Transformers: Cybertron Adventures, and Joystiq followed up with Activision, confirming that this new title is the Wii version of War for Cybertron, which is coming out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Cybertron Adventures, rated Teen, will feature a mixture of first- and third-person gameplay, and will be purportedly toned down from the more mature tone of the HD versions. The developer is unknown, but last year's Wii Transformers game was developed by Krome Studios.

On the other hand, the DS version of the game will retain the War for Cybertron subtitle, and, like previous DS Transformers games, come in two different versions: Autobots and Decepticons. Vicarious Visions has been responsibile for the past few DS games in the series, so it wouldn't be out of line to think that they are returning to the franchise again.

Oh Jesus Christ. I'm sure this game will suck balls on every console, but this is just fucking lame.

It actually looked kinda cool on the HD consoles, but with a name change like that for the Wii, I'm now expecting them to have changed the graphics to match that Marvel Super Hero Squad (http://marvel.com/images/357717._Marvel_Super_Hero_Squad_promo_image/from/content.story.6937) cartoon.

Doesn't matter since this game wasn't even on my radar anyway.

It's robot-on-robot violence, so why does it even need to be "toned down" for the Wii version?  Isn't it like the golden rule of children's programming that you can do whatever you want to robots, because they're robots?  That's how Batman: TAS always got away with it.

The key word is "purportedly."

Personally, I don't think this a big surprise. This will be like the Wii version of Revenge of the Fallen, and play to the strengths of the Wii while the 360/PS3 version will play to the strengths of their systems.

And it'll still suck with the DS game being the only one that's at least decent.

I actually thought it looked interesting. But the name change alone is making me cringe.

If the game does still turn out good on Wii I won't shun it for the name alone though.

Guys the name change isn't that big of a deal. Are we really going to judge a game on what its name is?
There is a saying. "Don't judge a book by its cover"
Isn't it what is the game more important than something as superficial as the name of the game.

It's the potential implications of the name change that bothers people.

The fact that they even felt a need to change the name is bothersome to me.

Any game based on a licenced IP is very likely not going to turn out good anyway.  For me the image of popular characters that did not debut in videogames is like a handy indicator to know which games to instantly avoid.

But the name change really demonstrates the Wii's image in the minds of third parties.  The Wii is the casual-focused toy for weenies so they have to have tone down fucking TRANSFOMERS which is a kid-focused product to begin with.

The Wii is not at all regarded as a serious videogame platform.  It is a dumping ground for kids titles and casual focused shovelware.  If you're making a REAL game you don't make it for the Wii (unless you're Nintendo who HAS to).  The Wii is a toy and a joke.  It doesn't matter if it has sold more than the Xbox 360 or the PS3.  I think in the minds of everyone except Nintendo and Nintendo fans this is like saying Hot Wheels outsells Ford.  We see it as apples and apples because it's a piece of electronics that hooks up to your TV and plays videogames.  But I think the rest of the world sees it as apples and oranges.  A billion Wiis could be sold but it does not matter for the Wii is not the same thing as an Xbox 360 or a PS3.  Even Nintendo themselves has all this talk about not competing.  I saw it as them bullshitting so that if the Wii failed they didn't look like tools but that is the reality.  They aren't competing.  They're different.  The Wii is the true third pillar.  You have consoles, portables and the Wii.

So that's why the name change is relevant.  It demonstrates how the Wii is segregated from all other videogame platforms.

Oh, for the love of Pete.  This is trolling and you know it.  Consider this a warning.

I'm merely stating that as an observation of how the Wii is treated by third parties.  It's a frustrating situation that drives me nuts.  We're getting name changes for Transformers games that remove words like "war".  For TRANSFORMERS!  This is how the Wii is treated.  Isn't this completely nuts?!

While the new name is bad, I doubt the name change is directly related to the Wii as a platform.

My hope is that the game is dramatically different on the Wii than it is on the other platforms and thus it was decided to give the game a different subtitle to let consumers know of this fact.

Recently, Ubisoft announced that PoP:  Forgotten Sands is a completely unique game on the Wii and yet it still has the same name as the PS3/360 title.  Personally, that doesn't make much sense to me.  The Wii isn't getting a scaled back version of the "proper game"--it's getting its own game that plays on its strengths.  It's impossible for customers to know this without doing some research.

If that's what Activision is doing here, then I applaud them for distinguishing the game from its counterparts.  Then again, if the Wii version is just a scaled back version of its big-brother counterparts then the Wii is just for little girls and babies and Activision can **** off.

It just shows how stupid 3rd parties have gotten really, what they should realize is the Wii is a perfectly viable console: see RE4.

That does make sense if it's a different game.  But I think it is far too much of a coincedence that in this particular case the original name has the word "war" in it.  The sad truth is, even as pure speculation, the suggestion of Activision censoring the name for the Wii release sounds believable.  We're at the point where it's almost effortless to come up with conspiracies regarding the Wii and third parties that sound credible.

You do realize that there are several Wii games with the word WAR in the title, including Nintendo's own Battalion Wars II, right?  There's also been a couple Call of Duty games (World at War, Modern Warfare) which have sold quite well--and they're published by Activision, nonetheless!

If the game's still rated T, then there has to be more reasoning than "Wii gamers don't like violent games".

maybe the game is more adventure oriented then its bigger console brother

Let's at least wait and see if the game is any different before we come up with crazy theories about censoring the word "war."

Hmm... Maybe it just means that it will have less focus on FIGHTING AND CRUSHING EVERYTHING THAT ISN'T AN AUTOBOT/DECEPTICON and more LOOK AT CYBERTRON AND EVERYTHING ON IT NOW LETS FIGHT

In other words, less graphics-intensive huge battles with high detail on everything and more exploring and smaller fights.

Who knows?

I'm going to have to preorder this if I'm going to get it. Shockwave ftw!

Isn't it like the golden rule of children's programming that you can do whatever you want to robots, because they're robots?  That's how Batman: TAS always got away with it.

Samurai Jack is the biggest example of this. Every single enemy in that entire show was robots. All the time.

Really? Well, that's promising.

And Next Level did make the closest thing to 'teh matoor Mario' in Strikers ;)

As soon as I saw that I thought exactly the same thing Ian did.  From my point of view, the name "Cybertron Adventures" sounds a hell of a lot more juvenile than "War for Cybertron".

And Spider-Man: Friend or Foe?

I love Next Level for their Nintendo output, but they reek of Silicon Knights' inability to make a quality product outside of Nintendo.

I wouldn't say so, I found it to be kind of a bad game.

Exactly why they shouldn't be allowed to touch anything ever.

...Next Level... inability to make a quality product...
I agree.
