Title: Sakaguchi Tweets New Info on The Last Story

Hironobu Sakaguchi claims that The Last Story is not a Final Fantasy rehash.

 In a Twitter session, Mistwalker founder and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi made a couple of comments regarding "The Last Story", the upcoming Wii-exclusive RPG.    

When a fan commented that the title "The Last Story" made it sound like the game would be a Final Fantasy rehash, Sakaguchi defended the game by saying that "I think you'll feel this once you've tried it. LS is not a rehash" and posted a screenshot. The comment, however, has been deleted since then.    

A fan then asked about the game's soundtrack and its composer. Sakaguchi explained that while he couldn't reveal the composer's identity, the composer did do all of the songs in the game.

The JRPG genre needs what Batman: Arkham Asylum did to the Stealth Genre. A killer app that inject new life into a genre on the decline.

Nobuo Uematsu is the current favorite in the Composer Pool.

Matoi Sakuraba would be my pick based on his wide musical range (he can certainly pull off a Final Fantasy-style sound given his Baten Kaitos, Eternal Sonata, and Valkyrie Profile soundtracks), though Uematsu is always a popular pick.  Personally, I hope it's not Uematsu because I feel like he lost his composer's touch around FF IX (X's soundtrack was only as awesome as it was because he had two other composers working with him).

Well, we've had several games now that are surely trying, the most notable of which recently have been FF XIII (with its focus on continual action and high-risk, high-reward strategy in large set piece moments) and Resonance of Fate (with its gun-heavy battles and a sand-box approach to world and character building).  I thought Valkyria Chronicles made an excellent stab at redefining the Strategy RPG (though, sadly, I don't think it sold well enough worldwide to have such an impact) with 3rd person shooter mechanics and a novel style.  Then you have the Persona games (3-4) with their melding of the dating sim/Japanese pop culture/dungeon crawler in a modern setting.  If Atlus has anything to say about it, the next big thing in RPGs will probably be the contemporary setting (a contemporary take on Final Fantasy could be interesting, incidentally) with an emphasis on action and steady pacing.

As for the story itself, I'm really getting sick of Sakaguchi hyping this game with nothing to show for it.  He can toss out all the concept art he wants, but until he can back it up with actual in-game screenshots and videos, I'm calling BS on the entire game.

Uematsu was recently at some even and people asked him directly if he was working on The Last Story. He declined to comment even though he tried his best to answer every other question asked of him. Not a confirmation by any means, but definitely puts him at the top of the watch list if you care.

I used to thrive on JRPGs in the 90's (Final Fantasy VI/VII, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Wild Arms), but I think I hit the wall during Final Fantasy VIII.  I just could not make it through that game, and I haven't been able to look at the series or the genre in the same way since.  Demon's Souls is the only JRPG (if you can classify it as such) that has interested me in the last decade or so.
