Title: 360 or Wii? (Not an elitist console war forum, I need your help!)
Post by: Hero_of_time113 on March 22, 2010, 10:38:10 AM
So my brother is going to be getting married next month, and as a gift for the bachelor party me and the other groomsmen are going to buy him a game console. But which one??
They both have many pros and cons, and I want to get him one that he'll really use.
He's a huge Nintendo fan, especially of the Metroid and Zelda series. But he also is a big fan of shooters.
And this is kind of an aside, but he uses Netflix instant watch a ton.
Any suggestions?

Whatever your intentions, you can readily find this information elsewhere and this can only devolve into a forum console war so the mods are pretty likely to lock this.  Just pick the console you think is best based on what your recipient will like most.

I'll let this one go, but I will only allow discussing the merits of either consoles to avoid flame wars.  What I mean is, you can say what is good about a Wii and you can say what is good about a 360, but you can't say anything bad about either.

Maybe that will keep it civil. :)

Each console has a single primary benefit that outways all others in my opinion.

Wii has an outstanding line-up of first party titles as well as the great Virtual Console.  It's a Nintendo fan's dream console in that regard.

360 has a robust online system that easily facilitates online gaming with friends.

If you are into PC games, most of them get released on the 360. Ditto the FPS shooters from Valve. If that is your area of interest, the 360 is your choice.

Like Nintendo games? Get a Wii, plain and simple. A great line up of Wii games, WiiWare and VC await to take the hard earned money from your wallet.

I think the RRoD plays a part in your decision.  The Wii is clearly more durable.

I think the Wii is a lousier choice for a hardcore gamer but for someone who just plans to own a few games, its flaws aren't as significant.  So I guess it depends on how interested your brother is.  Is he someone who will want to play the latest greatest titles every month or someone who needs only a game a year or so to satisfy him?

Keep in mind since this is a wedding gift his wife might prefer the Wii.  Does it matter that he plays the console with her?

Make a list of games you figure he would like and see which console has more of them.  That should be the difference maker.

Does he like dual analog control in shooters?

Does he want the Netflix to be in HD?

My response would be that you should get both, as they offer complementary experiences and it makes sense to have both of them, but that doesn't really help you when you're trying to choose a gift. The Wii is the cheaper option (if you're getting a 360 you really need a hard drive; the Arcade is not acceptable), so you could get a second controller and a game for the same price as just a 360.

I suggest the 360 just because it has a much wider variety of games and dramatically better online, though the RRoD is a severe issue that should very much factor into your purchase decision.  Also, as noted the cost is a real issue considering all the things you really should have if you want to use a 360 (HD TV with proper HD cables, multiple controllers, HDD, XBox LIVE membership, etc.).  The Wii's the cheaper console and may have a robust lineup of games in the future, and it has several notable games already right now both from 3rd parties and Nintendo themselves.

Nintendo Wii = all the Nintendo games + a new Metroid and possibly the most EPIC Zelda ever, coming this year. Not to mention that Netflix is coming to Wii in a few months but there are only a handful of shooters.

Xbox360 = tons of shooters. lots of them, almost too many of them. and Netflix HD (with $50 a year LIVE subscription). They also have Darksiders which is very Zelda like from the things I've read in the tread about it

Question is, does he like a huge selection of shooters more than he likes Metroid, Zelda & Nintendo? Is the new Zelda coming this year important to him or would he not mind a game that's very similar to it? Does he need his Netflix on his console now or is it he satisfied with where he is already watching it?

You also have to consider that if he's already watching netflix, he has a PC. maybe it would be cheaper to upgrade his PC and he can play lots of Xbox360 games on it and more shooters than he can ever get around to and buy him a Wii. Or just buy him both, you can't go wrong with both.

p.s. There is a new model of Xbox360 coming out this year that is supposed to be more reliable than all previous versions while rumored to also be a slimmer/smaller unit.

I'll approach this question from a different angle.  I give the following advice with the assumption that your buddy's wife is not a gamer, and not a Xbox 360 gamer in particular.

As a married guy (nearly five years, thanks), I'd say that if you actually want this to be a game console for both your friend and his wife, I'd choose the Wii; if it's just for him, you might go with the 360.   Most of the couples I know who play games together play them on the Wii; since your friend likes old console games, then I'd throw in some Wiiware point cards as well.

When you get married, if you want to have a good relationship with your wife, it's just a fact that your gaming time is going to get cut somewhat.  For many of my friends who like to game,  the amount of time they spend on their consoles is a major point of contention between them and their wives early on.   When you have kids, like I do, gaming time goes down even more (if you're not a completely worthless parent.)

So my advice is, give them a console something that will allow them to spend time together.

If his wife happens to like FPS's or just has a love for all things Microsoft, then just throw my advice out the window.

Sundolous has the best advice so far.

Get a Wii Bundle with Wii Sports Resort plus a copy of Red Steel 2 with motion plus. You get an A grade first person game and two motion pluses so the happy couple can sword fight each other on their honeymoon.

Two MotionPlus units but only one Wii Remote and Nunchuk.  :(

He'll love Metriod for the Shooting aspect, and his wife will love GH.

I'm very much of the idea that when trying to sell someone on a console only use titles currently released.  If it hasn't been released yet you don't know if it's any good.  You can assume but you don't truly know.  And Zelda we know virtually nothing about and don't even know for sure if it's coming out this year (Reggie gave the "it's ready when it's ready" speech).

Compare the games that are out now that we know are good.  So sell the Wii on the strength of NSMB Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3.

He is a Metroid Fan and a new metroid game is coming out, he is also a huge Zelda fan and a new Zelda game is coming out. Why would I not throw those into the arena when weighing a purchasing decision? We know they are coming, and we know that this Zelda is built from the ground up by Nintendo and they have been working on it for 4+ years.
I think that is a very big factor on making sure they recipient will be happy with his gift if they were to get him a Wii.

That's true.

I have both a 360 and PS3 and I use the PS3 way more. If I'm not playing a game, then I'm streaming movies to it or watching blu-rays.

In addition to the better media capabilities (with the exception of the 360's better Netflix implementation), I think the PS3 has a much more interesting lineup of exclusives than the 360, especially if you don't count things like Mass Effect or Left 4 Dead since they're available on the PC.

Having played both, I'd definitely take Killzone 2 over Halo 3, and don't forget that the various Calls of Duty are available on both (and in some cases all three).

Would he be playing primarily single player or multiplayer games?
If he's more interested in playing games with other people, like his wife-to-be or his friends/family, then the Wii is the way to go. It has a wide variety of multiplayer titles that almost anyone can play and enjoy. The Wii does still have some good single-player games though, such as Super Mario Galaxy and all that. If it is just something that he would play, the XBox 360 would probably be a better choice. It seems to have the largest selection of single-player titles available, even if it lacks in variety, and there is also a nice selection of online games.

This could open a whole other can of worms, but I have to ask: why isn't the PS3 being considered?

Firstly, I'd like to thank Pale a ton for letting this stay, and thank EVERYBODY for being so cival and helpful.
Now,  In answer to insanolord, the reason that the PS3 is not in the runnning is the simple fact that ALL of the Groomsmen have wiis (And insane as it sounds, we actually do play online) And half of us have 360s (Myself included) where as none of us, nor any of is other friends that I know of, have PS3s. It's just that dumbly personal.

As to Netflix, I had COMPLETELY forgotten that Wii would be getting it. Thanks for the reminder!

My sister and his Fiance have an interesting relationship when it comes to games. Though she does not tend to play them herself, she DOES often watch him play. So on that note, I see a big pro for both. The 360 is obviously more graphically impressive, though I have no idea how much she would care. And the Wii has games like Zack and Wiki with its much more casual "multiplayer" mode that is actually pretty similar to watching it.

Another factor is the Virtual Console. My Brother is a HUGE Retro-Gamer.

Judging by the response you gave I would go with the Wii. There is lots of retro games on the VC and Wiiware is a place to try out new ideas.

I think with the Wii your friends girlfriend will be able to watch and maybe help out with games. Zack and Wiki is a good example of games that can have local multiplayer without having to play against others.

I'm definitely starting to lean that way.

And here's another reason. Somebody mentioned that he must have a PC, and another person mentioned that most PC shooters are released on 360 (Sorry I don't remember who, I rather expected this thread to die before it started, but when I got out of class and checked it, there were tons or replies)
That reminded me that not only does he play a lot of those shooters on the PC (most recently Bioshock) But he and I had a discussion about how he actually much preffers PC shooter control over dual analog. In other words, almost all of the games he would want on 360, he already has access to in a setting he prefers. Where as the wii has the fore-mentioned exclusivity of the first party franchises.

I agree pretty much with what Ian is saying. Also, Netflix will be coming to the Wii at some point, so that should make the Wii an easier choice. However, if the Wii is absolutely out of the question I will have to say that between the PS3 and 360 the PS3 is the more logical choice, mainly because of the RROD issue but also because of MS' NATAL blunder which I predict won't go anywhere, and also with the PS3 you do get a bit more powerful system with blu-ray capability.

So first and foremost I would suggest a Wii because its cheaper, more reliable, has awesome games, and will have Netflix eventually. But if you refuse to go with a Wii then the PS3 is definitely the lesser evil.

Having a lot of friends who are active Wii owners, being a big retro game fan, a cheaper price point both initially and long-term with the lack of the cost of Xbox Live, and his already owning a gaming PC all seem to indicate that the Wii is the better choice in this situation. As for questions of the quality and quantity of software, I own all three consoles, and my biggest collection of games is the Wii by far; I own more than twice as many games as either other console. There's definitely a lot of good stuff on the Wii.

I would always recommend getting a Wii over one of the other consoles. The Wii provides an experience and a load of titles that the PS360 simply doesn't. Get them a Wii for the unique experience. Almost anything on the PS360 that's worth playing is available on the PC.

Well. I think that just about decides it. My brother is getting a Wii! Which is not to say that the 360 is inferior (Mine has been on all day, damn Halo) Nor is the PS3.
Thanks everybody so much! I would never have been able to think of all of those pros and cons on my own.

Well from my personal library I would suggest these.

New Super Mario Bros Wii. 2D Mario it is what you would expect from a 2D Mario game. It has 4 player local play. So 4 players can play throught the game at the same time.If I remember right it uses the Wii remote on its side(NES style) and I think the Classic controller.

Wii Sports Resort. It uses Motion Plus which makes the controls 1 to 1.Which means that the game tracks the movement of the Wii remote perfectly.

Punch Out!!
Yes there is a Punch Out game on the Wii. It supports the Wii remote and Nunchuck. There is a 2 player mode. There is a second harder round where you fight the same boxers as the first round but beating them is a bit more difficult.

No more heroes and No more Heroes:Despirate Struggle are good titles that use the Wiimote well.

If your bro wants another Shooter to play than The Conduit and Call of Duty:Modern Warfare Reflex are good. I don't have COD:MWR but there are a few people here that do have it and The Conduit measures up to COD:MWR.

Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii are good games. Brawls online is kinda iffy. It can at times be laggy. Mario Kart Wii has one of the best online experiences on the Wii.

If your Bro wants something a little more core like than Red Steel 2 comes out on the 23rd of March. Motion Plus is required for the game but Motion Plus comes bundled with the game.
It is basically a game were you have a sword and gun and you go through the game basically beating everbody up.

Super Mario Galaxy is another good game but its sequel is coming out in May.

There is lots that I am forgetting so I will post a video series of titles that came out since June 2009 to know in a little bit in this topic.

Also since I am not sure of your Bros taste in games there might be something in my collection that might interest him.

Yeah I would suggest going to Wal-Mart and getting the Wii Sports Resort Bundle like Black N Mild suggested.
That bundle probably has the most value at the moment.

What is the wii sports resort bundle exactly? I haven't hear anything about it.

New Super Mario Bros is pretty grandios, I'm working through that one right now.

I might get him Brawl, since that's what the rest of us have been playing online (but yes, it really is laggy. haha)

The Conduit and No More Heroes are both games I've been planning on picking up myself, but haven't gotten to yet.

Now, I'm sure he'll be interested in the Last Story and Arc Rise Fantasia later this year (or maybe next) But are there any notable Wii RPGs out now? I haven't really played any.

RPGs are kinda limited on the Wii but here are a few that I have in my collection.
Tales of Symphonia:Dawn of the New World. This is the sequel to the Gamecube Tales of Symphonia game. In this game you have 2 new characters to play as. The 8 from the GC game are in the game but they don't stick around that often. Since most of the game it is just the 2 characters you can befriend the monsters you fight to fight along side you. You can have 3 monsters total in your party with one of the main fighters or both fighters and 2 monsters.

I'm not sure if one would classify this as a RPG but Little King's Story is another good game. Have you played Pikmin? Well it is like that.
If you haven't played that that you basically have a group of people that do your fighting for you. There is long range fighters and close up fighters and some have specialized tasks.
There is farmers and Carpenters. The main idea of the game is to expand your kingdom into new territory.

Fragile Dreams came out a few days ago. Basically you are by yourself and exploring a world that appears to be just you in the world.

Final Fantasy:The Crystal Bearers is not like a party RPG it is single player. It stars this guy that has telekenisis powers so you can pretty much do what ever you want.
Super Paper Mario is a mix of 2D platforing and RPG battling. It has a nice idea that you can change the enviroment from 2D to 3D at will.
Those are the noteable RPGs.

The VC has a good selection of RPGs though. All of the Phantasy Star games are on there. Paper Mario for the N64. Mario RPG:Legend of the Seven Stars. Secret of Mana.

Hmm for some reason I can't link to the playlist for the Wii games.

Look up "Do U Wii" on youtube and you should find what I am talking about.

Wait, so did the internet manage to actually deliver for once?

Also you might want to try getting him a Gamefly pre-paid account that way he can just try different games.  It really doesn't sound like he's going play all that much (if he was hardcore he would already own a console) so I think the WII should keep him busy enough.

Also his Wife might like to keep in shape so buy EA Active Plus.
