Title: Malware?
Post by: Toruresu on February 16, 2010, 12:07:04 PM
Ok. My browser has been warning me that some parts of the forums contain malware. I've tried to copy/paste the link here but every time I do, the post gets erased.

Any idea whats going on?

Warning: Visiting this site may harm your computer!
The website at www.nintendoworldreport.com contains elements from the site mitglied.lycos.de, which appears to host malware – software that can hurt your computer or otherwise operate without your consent. Just visiting a site that contains malware can infect your computer.
For detailed information about the problems with these elements, visit the Google Safe Browsing diagnostic page for mitglied.lycos.de.

And that's the message.

What parts of the forum where you trying to visit?

was it specific threads or just the forum in general?

It's random in general. I specifically remember the rumor thread gave me this error.

The warning was being caused by KDR_11k's avatar, which was hosted at mitglied.lycos.de (I've since uploaded it to the server).  Since that's a hosting service, it's pretty lame for Google to have blacklisted the entire domain.

From now on, avatars will be hosted by us only.  This should speed forum loading and remove the possibility of this happening again (from avatars).  However, it will also break the few people who are using randomized avatars.

If you guys host our avatars, how will be be able to switch back to an old one again?
Will we have to re-upload it?

and is it really fair to change the whole avatar thing based on where one person hosted their avatar? I mean I only use tinypic and photobucket and those have never presented a problem. Wouldn't a list of approved avatar/pic hosting sites be easier on everyone and your servers? some of us do use the avatars we use here on more than one forum afterall.

I agree--don't ruin it for everyone because some German Lycos site is borked.  Why don't you just pair the list down to a pre-approved list of acceptable sites (Photobucket, TinyPic, etc.)?
However, it will also break the few people who are using randomized avatars.
Pro's gonna be pissed--first we break his title and now we kill his Daisy avatars.  :(

Avatars are only resized if they exceed 100x100.  So, if you have an animated avatar, it should stay animated as long as its within the limits.
