Title: Nintendo is getting on the bandwagon (full color artwork on game discs)
Post by: bustin98 on January 30, 2010, 11:03:24 PM
So, I picked up Tats VS Capcom and yadda yadda, played it for a while, took it a friend's house to play, played it again, and it finally hit me.

It has a full color print disc!

Say what? Since the Gamecube, Nintendo has refused to to allow more than at the most 3 colors on disc art, usually 2 colors. Third party or first party. Pretty boring compared to the discs of other systems.

So I look at some recent games. New Super Mario Bros Wii has full color too! The Metroid Collection? Nope. Dead Space Extraction?... oops, lent that to a friend, don't know.

This could be a new direction of Nintendo making baby steps to appease Third Party publishers, or just late to the party. Any speculation on the significance of this change in policy? It is at least interesting to note that they are willing to change, though what the driving force of this decsion is a mystery.

Maybe they are gonna do like movies and have the full color disc to those that order it retail and bland disc for those sold for rental.

Or even better, Full Color print disc in first batch of print and then bland colorless disc for reprints. Encouraging early adopters to buy now to get the color vs bargain shoppers that won't care about color disc.

Green cases help them save money, allowing more for ink.

TvC isn't a green case... :p
Neither is NSMBW

Maybe its how you can tell difference between the hard core and casual titles. Hard core has no concern for the environment.

My Muramasa disc is also full colour.

They've been doing this for a while; I know both Wii Sports Resort and The Conduit are full-color.

Nintendo is one of the stingiest companies around if you ask me.

Only Xbox cases are green. Oh, wait, you mean that other kind of green, right?

Little King's Story had a full-color game disc when it was released in July.

I think Activision is stingier. Their instruction manuals barely clock in at more than two or three pages long. "Here are the controls. Go eff yourself."

They do this with movies?  I never noticed.  Seems like a big waste of effort.

But then I never noticed this with Wii games either.  Honestly the art on the disc itself is something I barely even think to look at.  I pretty much just look at it to identify that I have the correct movie/game and what's disc 1, 2, etc.

I wasn't always like that though.  In high school when I first got a CD player and started getting CDs I paid a lot of attention to the art on the CD itself.  Now I would only notice if it was exceptionally eye catching.

I did notice that Cube discs were very plain but I assumed there were limitations due to the physical size.  Would there be some cost on Nintendo's part if third parties used full colour?  Why would they prevent it in the first place?

Maybe their disc printing machines were originally not designed to make full color discs and when they bought a better/newer one it had that feature as a standard?

Interestingly, I got Crystal Bearers and it had the 'green' case, but No More Heroes 2, a game released over a month before, does not have a green case. Do you think that the type of case is left up to the publisher so we'll only start seeing games with cheap budgets getting green cases?

I always figured that in the case of Nintendo's games, it was just a minimalistic style approach. I never really noticed that all games followed suit. Is that really a regulation that Nintendo put forth?

I read somewhere when the Gamecube released that there was some instructions from Nintendo to limit the colors on the discs. Spread out over the number of discs printed, using less colors brings down the cost of printing.

Being the poorish gamer that I am, its been a while between purchases. I don't the Conduit stands out that much as being full color, same with Wii Sports Resort, but I will have to look. But its not a point of when it happened, the point is that its something that's changed at Nintendo that is forgoing streamline for flashy presentation.

Murmasa is full colour.

But you guys are dogs. If you wanted anything but Gold on the Zelda disc you are a dog.

Hey, I've been buying gold Zelda carts since the NES. There was a time I think Nintendo knew how to use style in their favor. Just since the N64 they lost sight of that side of the business.

I hope Zelda Wii has a gold case. I miss those and am glad some games are coming in different colors now.

Anyone remember the petition to get Perfect Dark's cart color silver? I think I signed that one.

Especially annoying for Modern Warfare 2 since they made it more expensive than usual.
