Nevermind, this thread is now about Nintendo being neither here nor there.
I'll start off the discussion; Zelda II was so-so. The gameplay while having its fun moments, was also tedious. The soundtrack, while excellent, was also lacking. If I had to rate it on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd probably choose not to.
But if I really had to, it'd be a 5/10. Yep, right in the middle..
Would anyone like to refute this opinion? Actually, I'd advise you to stay neutral..

Nintendo isn't infallible and anyone who says the company is has their head in the sand.
They leave large gaps in the release schedule. They sent ExciteBots out to die. They generally ignore VC, WiiWare, and DSiWare and don't promote the services. They haven't localized key titles that--while of questionable quality--many fans want. They've seemingly abandoned DS development. They put out the DSi as a stop-gap to increase sales--and followed it up with the DSi XL less than a year later! They haven't released a VC service for DSi. The list goes on and on!
This isn't to say that don't do many, many things right. The company is responsible for many of my favorite games. I have never owned a non-Nintendo system.
If people on this board want to discuss the negative aspects of Nintendo they're free to do so (in a civilized manner). If they'd rather focus on the many positive aspects of Nintendo they can do that, too. I think most of us are mature enough--and open-minded--do be able to handle both.
And for the record, Zelda II is a solid 7. It had some really great ideas but the execution left a little too much to be desired. I played through the game a few years ago for the first time, and while I enjoyed it, I don't have any desire to play it again any time soon.

Zelda II is an interesting one. Even before Zelda was an established franchise, people complained about its sequel going in a different direction. Yet people also complain when Zelda sequels are too similar. I fear for the new Zelda Wii. It's in a no-win situation for sure. Eh, whatever. Zelda II is one of my favourite NES games and nothing will change that.
As for the topic title, I don't really understand why many longtime Nintendo fans are so desperately angry at Nintendo. They've managed to create new franchises whilst keeping all of their existing ones and even bringing back blasts from the past, and they've expanded the gaming audience to include everyone and are on the fast track to squashing tired stereotypes and making gaming socially acceptable by everyone. Isn't that what we wanted?

What's really tiring is the self-righteous smugness that permeates through people that think (or pretend) they aren't biased one way or the other. Even worse when their bias shows through anyway. :reggie:

I don't recall ever hearing your disinterest in Link to the Past, but I remember well your Mario World comments. What other highly regarded classics, if any, do you not look upon fondly. I'm curious if it is merely a few isolated incidents, a distaste for SNES games in general, or perhaps you don't have a terribly persuasive Nostalgia Monster nagging you to glorify said classic games.

Oh about being "unbiased" LOL. I heard somebody say they were an unbiased rock music fan once. He had every Pearl Jam Poster he could find on his wall and as well as a mountain of ticket stubs from their concerts, as well as all their CDs. Good thing he said he was unbiased, though.
And Reggie's (whoever he is) right. It's a certain kind of smug assholishness that leads to people saying they are "unbiased." Not only is it an affirmation that their opinion is somehow better than yours, it's also an indirect accusation of fanboyism for just disagreeing. And it's even worse when that person is pretty biased himself. It's like a hypocrite/douchebag character type all in one. Not very classy.

Well, I never played either game until the GBA versions since I didn't have an SNES and I've barely spent any time with one, so I don't have any nostalgia for them. Then again, that means I also have no nostalgia for Super Metroid and Yoshi's Island, both of which I love enough to have them in my personal top ten.
