Title: Famitsu Reveals New Details About Red Steel 2

The upcoming Wii MotionPlus shooter is nearing completion.

Famitsu recently flew out to Ubisoft's offices in France to conduct an interview with multiple members of the Red Steel 2 development team. In the interview, the creative team revealed some interesting new details about the shooter, including the films that influenced the game's creation and why they decided to forego the first game's realistic art style.

The developers explained that 95 percent of the game's content is ready to go. In fact, even with debugging included on the development schedule, the game is 90 percent finished and is currently on target for shipping in March.

One juicy morsel that the team was willing to share is that players will be able to dual-wield guns. Ubisoft Paris has also put a great deal of work into creating a varied group of devious enemies to face off against. In all, players will encounter close to 40 different types of enemies, such as motorcycle-riding clan members and a hammer-carrying boss.

The development team also detailed how they simply used Google for research when fabricating Japanese clan names like "Kusagari" and "Katakara." The main goal when creating clan names was to find suitable Japanese words that were basically gibberish.

Red Steel 2 appears to be one of the first titles to heavily utilize Wii MotionPlus in 2010. Interestingly, the creative team's choice of cel-shading was done because the art style benefited their implementation of Wii MotionPlus.

Fine works of cinema also had on influence on the development of Red Steel 2. The developers were inspired by films like Kim Ji-woon's The Good, the Bad, the Weird and Akira Kurosawa's classic Seven Samurai.

This is all fine and dandy, but there's still a humongous question mark hanging over the sword fighting. It's more integral to the game now that you can wield the blade any time, so I hope they've tightened the controls up (impressions so far have been skeptical). I know Ubisoft says that's the reason Red Steel 2 was pushed back, but come on! Only 90% finished in January 2010? This delay was more than just MotionPlus teething troubles - they hadn't finished the game. Well, at least they are making sure everything is in place rather than rushing it out incomplete like the original.

I think they know it has to pass the test of time if they want the game to see sales sustained over a lengthy period of time. Slow Burn Baby!!

Nintendo quality blah blah blah....

If anything they should put it back to July JUST BECAUSE it's finished and needs polish.

What?!? A 3rd party actually pushing back a games release to ensure a more complete and polished package? Who does that these days on Wii outside of Nintendo?

Only 90% finished in January 2010?

As the saying goes, "The first 90% of the work require 90% of the time. The other 10% of the work require the other 90% of the time."

Oh, I get that. I'm just saying that I don't think Ubisoft could have ever expected this to have met the initial release date of Autumn 2009 when there's still 5-10% of the game's content in the works even now.

Bu-but the creepy long-haired guy with the cane at E3 told me they took inspiration from the modern day classic Six String Samurai.

When those games are made for X360 and PS3.

Did he show you the SWORD inside his cane?

Ubisoft can make a great game when they put their heart into it. Rabbids Go Home gave me hope that Red Steel 2 will be really polished and a significant improvement over the first game (which was clearly rushed to meet the Wii launch release date).

Of course, I am always cautious since Red Steel 2 could be just as cumbersome as the first game. But MotionPlus support, a longer development time and an enhanced game engine could really make a game that's better in nearly every aspect.

We'll see...

UbiSoft's rep with the entire Nintendo fanbase rests on this entire game. It's do or die to them. If this game fails on a quality level, the third party hatred is only going to get worse from here on out.

Not that I blame ninty fans for hating third parties, but still...
