In a surprise announcement, Nintendo will be offering a special sale on Virtual Console Sega Genesis games. For a limited time, a select group of Genesis games will be sold for only 500 Wii points, the first time a series of games have been sold for less than the suggested Wii Shop Channel price.

The following Sega Genesis games are for sale:

A blog entry on Sega's European Site has confirmed that the offer is available for European players as well.

Maybe Nintendo sees how well all those Steam and D2D sales were doing and decided to inject some enthusiasm into their VC market too.

Hope they do this more often to push some of the other systems and maybe do a slightly bigger discount. ie. NES games for 300pts or N64/NeoGeo games for 600pts.

I'm just happy to see any sales on VC. Fun fact - Sega announced the sales on VC and PSN today, however no XBLA sale has been announced.

Yeah, I definitely hope they do more of these things in the future. One of the bigger complains about the Wii Shop Channel as a whole is that some games are overpriced. These promotions could inspire people to download more and maybe get more people connected.

Great chance to pick up Gunstar Heroes and Toe Jam & Earl. I've always meant to pick up these games.

I'm not interested in anything that's on sale, but it is nice to know that sales are actually possible on the Virtual Console and I do hope to see more of this sort of thing in the future.

It's the Amazon way. Randomly discount things to get you to check back on the site repeatedly. I'm always checking Amazon to see what games have been discounted, what the gold Box deals are and what the current list of $5 albums are.

I already have Gunstar and I'm not a huge Sonic fan, so this list is a little lean to me, though Altered Beast is a possibility if only for the hilarity. RISE FROM YOUR GRAAAAAVE!

Still, it's interesting to see games going on sale on the VC. I pray this happens with increasing frequency.

Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Store have done this before, so I am happy to finally see Virtual Console get sales. I would like to see Nintendo have random weekly sales (this week could have 100 points off Metroid and Bonk's Adventure, the next week on Cho-Aniki and F-Zero, etc.). I don't have any money to get games, but I am interested in Streets of Rage 2. I hope enough people buy these games to encourage Nintendo to do more sales.

I wonder who takes the loss in revenue though, Nintendo or Sega or both?

Since royalties are usually proportional by percentage I think it would effect them both. Also since all of these titles came out a while ago on the VC, I'm sure this sale would help on what would otherwise be stagnant sales or it can ignite newfound interest in these titles.

Sales on 10 different games is pretty good though, you usually don't see that many titles being discounted on PSN at a given time and Microsoft offers deals only to Xbox Live Gold members while Silver members get shafted (why would you pay a subscription in order to receive a discount?!?!)

I picked up Gunstar Heroes on the PSN tonight for only 2.99.  Wow.  The game is harder than I thought it would be.

I already either own or have zero interest in most of those games, but I've been on the fence about Streets of Rage 2 for a while and this'll probably get me to buy it.

I believe MS restricts sales to Gold users only.

Nope, Xbox Live Silver members can buy Xbox Live Arcade games too, but there is exclusive content for Gold members and you won't be able to play the games online (http://www.xbox.com/en-HK/live/features/silverage.htm).
