Title: Gamecube DVD
Post by: KnowsNothing on April 22, 2003, 10:56:17 AM
Umm... Can Nintendo make DVD's just for the Gamecube?  I mean, they can include DVD features and recordings of actually people in their games.  I'm thinking of the "Making of"" Section in SSX Tricky (probably not the best example).  Couldn't they just skip the game and make movies?  It would probably be a huge failure, and lose Nintendo a ton of money, seeing as alot of people own regular DVD players.  Just dreamin'...

Yes they could.  The Gamecube can do MPEG2 playback (the format that DVDs are in) as well as DivX playback.  I don't see any reason for anyone to ever release a movie on a gamecube disc though.

Unfortunetely the Gamecube disks are so small that they only hold like 1.5 GB of data. Most new DVDs are dual layered and 9.4 GB (2*4.7 GB). So I dont think they could really hope to fit much on the disk. They could add a few minutes of commentary or some of the comercials for the game, that would be nice. But if Nintendo has extra space on the disks they could/should include a free demo of a new game.

In Divx formatt you will be able to fit 6-to-7 30 minute shows on one GOD, depending on the size of the emulation program, so its not all that impossible to put a high quality 30-to-45 minute documentary on a disk as a bonus.

god bless Divx. but how come no one uses divx for the Gamecube? or are there games that take advantage of it? is it too costly, or is it because all mostly we get are ports (i'm just now thinking about it, and the second one is probably the answer?

Well DivX hasn't been around for the GC very long as far as game development times go.  Developers haven't had time to get it into games yet.  I mean Factor 5 are the ones who made it, and they haven't even put a product out that uses it yet. (I wonder if RS:3 will use it)

LOL here's a thought, y doesn't Nintendo make a dual layered gamecube disk?  It might work, I know someone out there will proof me wrong somehow.

It's not new.  In fact it's old and Toys R Us won't stock it.

Not without changing the drive optics so that it can read the second layer properly. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but few games have needed to use a second disk (Tales and RE are the only ones I can recall).

I just got some EA shudders from reading that. I´d prefer a disc full of demos, not some shoddy NFSU:2 preview buried deep within the menus of my ad-riddled Burnout 3 game.

Lies. Rebel Strike and Enter the Matrix as well as the THUG series have made use of the technology.

EDIT: ARGH BB CODE

What's with the bringing back of old terrible threads made by my formal self?

Not cool.
