Title: DSi with Larger Screens Coming to Japan

 Nikkei news is reporting that Nintendo is set to release a new version of the Nintendo DSi in Japan this year.  While its price will remain the same (18900 yen), it will boast 4" screens as opposed to the 3.25" screens of its predecessor.    

The device is apparently aimed at an older market that will appreciate the larger buttons and screens.  Despite the plan to release it in Japan this year, no release plans for other regions have been announced.

Is the DSi system itself getting bigger, or just the screens? If it's just the screens, wouldn't this be WORSE for people with big hands? It would mean less space for the the buttons since they would have to be pushed closer to the edges to make room for the screens.

I think they have no choice but to make it bigger, there would be nowhere to put the buttons otherwise.

I'm imagining a system that is taller and wider, but much thinner. Similar to what happened with the Nano iPod when it got video playback.

why the hell didn't they do this with the DSi was originally released ??

i bet this is Japan Only or limited quantities. I much rather Nintendo WAIT and make the screens 4 inches for DS True successor. It's insane that less than a year another hardware update. WiiHD seems like it's coming late 2010 just watch

My mom quit playing Brain Age because the screen on her DSPhat was too small and was starting to give her headaches.  This might fix that problem.

That is a good point, Adolph, all of these DS updates, yet no Wii update yet. I know sales are different, but still.

Also, I'm glad I haven't gotten a DSi yet considering this may be better. If anything it may force down the price of the DSi if I decide the new one isn't worth the extra dough.

Hmm, so maybe this is a more casual catering DSi? I know my grandma needs one of those special phones with huge buttons she can easily see, so maybe this is a 'seniors' edition?

You mean you've only spent $5 since the Bock Band point promo ended? That's kinda sad (sad in regards to the DSiWare library sucking).

Good point about the point transfers, though. Maybe you can get Nintendo to transfer the points for you? Or you could just gift all the games you want to the new system.

No gifting on the DSi yet...

Has the Black Wii been released in Japan?  Has Nintendo announced any kind of Shop Transfer service?

How did you get all of those on the system? You can't get more than 10000 points!

I'm sorry, but if this supposed system comes out and doesn't feature some sort of increased resolution, I don't think Nintendo gets it.  They can claim its aimed at the older market or whatever, but size isn't what makes the iPhone or the PSP's screen better.  It's resolution!

If this comes out and they are just scaling up the already humongous pixels, I'm not sure what to say.  I mean just look at the grossness.  (Image assumes a baseline 72 dpi monitor).  The original DS looked gross enough due to huge pixels. =P

If you have your Wii linked to a Club Nintendo account, I think you can just ask Nintendo to transfer the points from your old Wii to your new Wii (when you link your new Wii to the same Club Nintendo account).

The BETTER solution is, if you feel you must buy it... Buy it, then send it to me. I won't mind the resolution issue! :D
