Title: DSi LL Announced! *Pics Inside* 4.2" screens
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on October 26, 2009, 03:39:58 PM
Here is something for the NWR tip line, and it's gonna need their NWR Japanese correspondent to translate,

source: today's Nikkei morning post
http://blog.livedoor.jp/jim115/archives/51286284.html

according to the article,
-All specs and functions of the new model are the same as the current DSi, only difference is that the new screen is larger, now 4" (current DSi = 3.25")
-Retail price remains the same, 18900 yen
-To be released this year in Japan, outside of Japan release is still being discussed

My guess is that 3.25" upgrade (DS screen = 3") wasn't enough of a difference to push current DSPhat/DSLite owners into double dipping and upgrading to the DSi fast enough. Also 4" screens probably didn't cost much more to produce so it was almost like a free upgrade for Nintendo.

Only question I have is what is the new screen resolution?

WHAT. THE. HELL.

Only question I have is what is the new screen resolution?

Doesn't it have to have the same resolution as the existing DS/DSi if it's going to be 100% compatible?

No. Remember that GBA had a different screen size from the GB/C and it could play those old games just fine. You even had the option of stretching the image to fit the screen or keeping it at the original resolution.

You know its funny. For a moment I was thinking that a new DSI with 4 screens was coming out. I was about lose so much faith in Nintendo.

I don't want it to stretch (even though hoping for more than that is being delusional), I was hoping for some up-scaling on the smallest of scales.

Otherwise you are gonna have noticeable pixelation right?

Nintendo is like Apple. Damn, why they got to release one version of hardware and then another?

Yeah, this is pretty bogus though I don't expect this version of DSi to leave Asia.

GB->GB Pocket->GBC

GBA->GBA SP->GBA SP 2.0->GBA Micro

DS Phat->DS Lite->DSi->DSi 2.0?

I'm guessing that this may be similar to the soft upgrade that GBA SP got near the end of it's life where they upgraded the screens to have a better lighting option?

Either way, this does seem excessive. Though they may be trying to pull a DS Micro type of sale. Only giving you bigger screen as opposed to GBA Micro's 'teeny-weeny-eyestrain-o-vision'.

I'm slowly making my way to having 16 DS's....

Let me think about my house hold.... 3 DS Chubs. 1 blk DS light for my bro, 1 white for me, got sick of the white, gave it away and got the ugly "ice" blue from japan. Got sick of that quick and got the yellow pikachu addition that I love. Then got a DSL black for my girl friend.

Now I wan't a Red DSI, but if this one is coming out, I'm glad I didn't get it yet. Sheash! Blasted nintendo! Though really its my own fault for constantly buying.

Also that doesn't count the 3 DS's I baught as gifts. Now they are obsolete!

Nintendo Plans DS Push (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/10/27/nintendo_ds_push/)

Quote
The Tuesday morning edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports that Nintendo will be attempting to spur sales of its DS line of portable systems. Domestically, the company will be releasing a DSi hardware revision within the calendar year. By the end of the fiscal year, it aims to release the current DSi in Korean and Chinese markets.

The new domestic DSi, which goes unnamed in the paper, is the current DSi with a larger screen. The new screen size is over four inches, well above the current model's 3.25 inch size.

With the larger screen size, Nintendo aims to expand use for the system to movies and digital books, and also spur demand amongst older audiences who might have considered the current screen hard to see. It also hopes to fend off stronger competition from Sony and Apple.

Pricing for the new system is expected to be "about the same" as the current model's ¥18,900. The paper lists a release time frame as the calendar year rather than the fiscal year, so it's possible that this will be a holiday item.

Interestingly, the DSi saw a similar Nikkei "unveiling" in late September last year. At the time, the paper did not provide a new name for the system.

We already knew Nintendo wanted to cater to an older audience that was having a harder time seeing the current screens, but are they really gonna bring Movies to the system? I wonder how they plan on doing that.

Does that make the system itself larger or does the screen just occupy a larger part of it? Also more area = more power used for lighting so I'd expect less battery life.

Now that my Lite has a right shoulder button that sometimes sticks, I would upgrade for a bigger screen at this point.  I'm getting so sick of blowing it during heavy sessions of invaders.

If they don't up the resolution, it will be damn near disgusting looking.  Here's my comparison image.  It assumes a 72 dpi monitor.

Perhaps they know a trick to magically make all games look 1080p.

This isn't a big deal, as long as nothing is changed except the screen-size. What I mean to say is, it better not offer new features and stuff or else I will be pissed, because I recently bought a DSi. A slightly larger screen isn't really a huge deal, and I won't feel cheated or anything as long as that's all there is.

But if you ask me, what the DS could really use is a TV-out option so we can play games on a huge ass screen. Perhaps at some point they could even release a peripheral for the Wii to allow it to play DS games on it Ala the GBA player for the cube. That would be cool.

You don't need to buy a GB micro DSii if you don't want it. I'm fine on my DSphat and wont buy a DSi until it can run homebrew strait off the SD card.

Even if they up the res, the sprites most likely will be the same res and still look blockly because there was no point in making them bigger then they needed to be. Although, the 3D DS games like MKDS will look much better in detail. Examples of which you can see when they are being played on a Developer Kit systems or anything that let them be play on a full sized TV/monitor (Like on a high budget video review shows like xplay).

Would you be upset if it included more on board flash memory for games? Because that is another logical thing to upgrade. Apple does it with the iPod.

Though if Nintendo is going to try and got the Apple-iPod rought, they need to create a more streamlined way to transfer your data/games from your old one to your new one. This means going beyond the simple D/L ticket system they have going right now.

I'd be so incredibly pissed if Nintendo upped the internal storage of the DSi now that I've bought one. Unless, like the Wii, they let me do stuff off the SD card (technically that's not what it does but it's close enough), in which case I don't care.

Impressive. I don't like the full pen stylus, but the bigger screen and free software are nice touches. Also, I this that wine red color looks really nice. Not as nice as black or some of the other colors, but it is still a cool color.

This is totally crazy. I didn't expect the DSi LL to leave Japan, but it's coming next year. I can't really imagine who would really want this. If anything it feels frustrating because the DSi is not even a year old. This is like the GameBoy upgrades, but much more accelerated. Maybe Nintendo figures that they have the sales to back up stronger and more advanced hardware. To me it seems more and more like a e-reader or tablet. I just hope that this doesn't replace the DSi system. I will be upset if the DSi LL will be able to do anything better than the DSi. Anything!

At this point not enough is known about the DSi LL to know whether it's "better" than a DSi.  We don't know how Nintendo's going to handle the bigger screens (larger pixels, upscaling, etc.), we don't know if there's going to be a better processor in it (seems unlikely) and we don't know if there's going to be a bigger storage solution.

I found the DS Lite to be rather uncomfortable so if this is larger then it might make it that much easier for me to hold. That's what I like about it. There sure will be a lot of options for me should I one day decide to buy a second-hand DS...

Mostly Nintendo 64, yeah. But I've always tried to focus more on games rather than hardware and accessories, and I've never had much interest in portables either.

I don't really care for a bigger device, the DSi is the perfect size for me. I don't want a huge portable hence why I don't own a PSP.

I think it's pretty obvious that the specs are identical to the DSi other than the screen size (and therefore pixel size) and battery size (mostly due to the increase in space demanded by the larger screen).  I don't know why anyone is speculating more.  It's meant to be a DSi with larger screens.  Nothing more.  The bundled apps just reinforce the target audience.

You're most likely correct, but I don't think anything has been made official yet.  I already have a DSi so it doesn't really affect me either way.

I am planning on picking one up at the end of November. The main reason I want to import it is for the future DSi only titles and it seems Nintendo is getting some great stuff over on the Japanese DSiWare.

I know it's frustrating that Nintendo seems to be updating the DS at least every other year, but I think this is a very positive step (assuming they don't pull a PSPgo and raise the price).

I'm almost 30 now and when most of you get there, you'll see you start losing some of your eyesight typically.  You don't have to be 80 years old to enjoy a larger screen.  I much enjoyed the PSPs screen which is why I can't believe they shrunk it for the go.  I have 2 DS phat's and this may get me to upgrade.  I was upset that the DSi came out because like VC and WiiWare on the Wii(at least for the longest time), DSi has crap support.  Yes, DS has a great library but there is absolutely nothing out there that makes me think I need to spend $170 to have a DSi.  They should have just made a DS 2 and been done with it so developers were forced to make games for it.  Having said that it'll probably still take me at least 1 killer app and and a price point < $150 to jump on board but this at least has me excited about the DS again.  A 4.2" screen is 96% bigger than my Phat screen.  I think that is a worthy upgrade.  It's 67% bigger than the current DSi model.  What's also interesting is since the PSP uses a 16:9 ratio and the DSi uses a 4:3, that one screen on the DSi LL will be 7% bigger than the 4.3 inch PSP screen.

The screens are big and bright, and are at exactly the same resolution as the standard DS and DSi's pixel count so the picture looks natural. It's not stretched or upscaled because the resolution is identical. But the big screens definitely make the games "pop" as you play them – I'm really digging The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks on the new system.

:Q :confused;

Same rez, bigger screen and not stretched and it 'pops' what ??
