Title: Wii Play, Wii Fit Among Top-Selling Games of the Decade
Post by: NWR_DrewMG on October 14, 2009, 04:52:44 AM
The twin behemoths have sold a combined 19 million copies in North America.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=20148

According to sales data provided to IGN by the NPD Group, Wii Play and Wii Fit are two of the top three best-selling games in North America this decade.  Wii Play has sold 11.1 million copies since launching in February 2007, and Wii Fit has sold 7.9 million copies since this past April.  Both titles have followed Nintendo's strategy of bundling hardware along with their games.  Currently in the number two position is 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, with 8.25 million copies sold.

"As your numbers show, with almost eight million sold life to date and a place in the Top 10 every month since it's launched, it's pretty clear that consumers love this game," says Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo's Vice President of Sales and Marketing, of Wii Fit.  "The appeal of Wii Fit is so broad and its ability to keep attracting new users every month has really played out time and time again."

Nintendo hopes to continue this success with Wii Fit Plus, which just launched in North America last week.  Dunaway explains, "There's certainly an opportunity there. That being said, we think Wii Fit Plus really expands upon the marketplace. And the new enhancements that come with Wii Fit Plus are going to make it appeal to an even broader audience."

"Soon to be in the number three position is 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, with 8.25 million copies sold."

Fixed after looking to the very near future.

Maybe not, unless you start treating Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus as one title (which one could arguably do, but NPD certainly won't).

There are easily 350,000 copies of the original Wii Fit in stores.  People will still choose the original over Wii Fit Plus because of the cheaper price, and once retailers start discounting people will be even more likely to choose the original.

Just think about the revenue generated by about 22 million units of Wii Fit sold worldwide at $90 a pop.

I'd rather not.

Well, you should.  I think it might be the most ever generated by a single video game.

I would! If all those Wii Fit units sold for $90 each, it's approximately 1.98 Billion dollars. More than what Titanic made in the box office.

I should care why?

Because this thread's about it and that if you don't like it you should probably have not replied instead of caring so much about the topic that you decided to tell us how much you don't care?

I might care if I actually thought that money would go toward the research and development of new and interesting products instead of just being banked.

Yeah, didn't you know we just quit making games period?  Mop_it_up said it, so it must be true.

Or I could point out that our R&D budget has increased considerably in the past year.  Or I could point out titles like Wario Land Shake, Punch-Out, and Sin & Punishment 2 might not have ever existed if there weren't titles like Wii Fit to finance them.  But keep on being snarky, it's only making you look like more of a wanker.  :reggie:

Right, because the seventeen billion you already had wasn't enough. And none of your other games make any money either.

The sales numbers are indeed impressive, but I couldn't care less about revenue.

Did you actually just reword your post and not reply?

Because it looks like you did.  May I ask that you cut to the chase with your posts?  Because this whining you are doing is just irritating, and I don't know what your point is.

Are you angry Nintendo doesn't just sink all their profits into R&D?  Do you hate profits?  Do you hate things that become successful?  Do you hate successful things that you don't like?  What?

Yeah, I should have said in my first post that the numbers are impressive.

Do you hate successful things that you don't like?
No, I like Wii Fit.

Do you hate things that become successful?
That depends on what we're talking about, but I like that Nintendo has found success with their recent venues.

Are you angry Nintendo doesn't just sink all their profits into R&D?
No, because they need to have a safety net in case things take a turn for the worse. But I do feel like they could spend a little more on some of their projects, so I don't want to think about all of the money they have sitting around now.

I'm sorry for being negative, I should try to have a more positive attitude.

45 million copies of Wii Sports at 250$ each.

$11.25 Billion from WiiSports!!! insanity!

$1.98 Billion from WiiFit

$575 million from WiiPlay

that's almost $14 Billion from 3 games.

Giving away the Wii for free with that Sports game was GENIUS.
so was giving away a bathroom scale and a relay baton for free too.

$575 million from WiiPlay

Try $111 million from WiiPlay.  It's a $10 game, not a $50 game.

People always say that Wii Play is a good deal, but I myself never saw the mini-games as being worth $10. We're long past the days when Remotes were hard to find outside of the Play bundle.

I'd say that at least Shooting Gallery and Tanks would each be worth $5 on WiiWare.

Wii Play is good and easily worth the money.

It even comes with a free controller.

According to the logic of Malstrom the controller has nothing to do with the success of Wii Play. The best games sell the most and what sells the most are the best. Yay for circular logic!  Whats hilarious is this same logic forces him to state GTA San Andreas is a better game than Mario Galaxy. But hey what does he know. Isn't this the same guy that published a 700 page essay on how Mccain would destroy Obama the night before the election?

That said, it just doesn't make much sense to include Wii Play on these lists. People bought it bc they needed 2-4 wiimotes and they figured it'd be as solid as Wii Sports.  I still have yet to meet a human in reality who likes the game. Even my moms said it sucks. We got tricked.

I liked it. Nice to meet you.

My mom loves it too.

If people didn't want the game then they could have bought just the controller and saved $10 in the process.
WiiPlay was a fun pick up and play game for when you just want to do something simple yet challenging.

People like me bought it assuming it would be great since Nintendo made it, or at the very least have somewhat functonal controls. Oh well. Live n learn.

Why does this news article conflict with SalesBot (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=18481.msg558330#msg558330)?  Is this article only refer to single-SKU games (which is why GH3 is missing and San Andreas' sales are slightly lower)?  And if so, did San Andreas really sell so poorly on Xbox?

My sister played Wii Play like crazy until she got her hands on World of Goo.

I don't think Malstrom is very fond of Galaxy and hell, what's wrong with GTA SA? It's 95% on Metacritic compared to 97% for Galaxy.

Besides, saying that an equivalence works both ways is not circular logic. He simply defines best as pleasing the most people which translates to high sales.

Its funny b/c Malstrom would never admit GTA SA is a good game, he hates those types of games, yet his thinking demands he admit its one of the greatest ever.  His logic fails.  According to him, Deca Sports is a WiiZillion times better than Zack n Wikki.

What's wrong with GTASA? It even has that arcadeyness of being able to start up and faff about immediately.
