Title: The HALLOWEEN "Scary" Movie Watchlist
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on October 11, 2009, 01:20:05 PM
There are 20 days left before Halloween and my Netflix queue is loaded with all sorts of movies to watch, but I want to know what are all the BEST and NEWEST scary/fun/horror/gory movies to watch around this time of year.

I'm gonna start this list with a movie from 2007 that just got released on DVD this past Tuesday.

Trick 'r Treat
A fun horror movie with a few faces you might recognize, like Brian Cox & Anna Paquin. Think more along the lines of Tales from the Crypt/Creepshow than movies like Halloween since this one has several separate story lines that are all intertwined with the overarching theme of "It's Halloween" and there traditions that must carry on.

Halloween
I'll just go ahead and get this one out of the way. We all know who Michael Myers is, and I'm sure that most of us have seen atleast one of the movies in the series or the most recent Rob Zombie remake. This is a Halloween Classic, and set the bar for many movies to follow, so if you haven't seen it yet, then what are you waiting for.

Nightmare on Elm Street
Another scary classic series following Freddy Krueger as he haunts the nightmares of those that fear him. This is also getting a remake pretty soon, but I think the original is fine just the way it is. This was probably the only movie I've ever seen that actually scared me long after I watched it, and that makes it perfect for a Halloween viewing.

Paranormal Activity
This movie is very creepy and just now hitting theaters around the country. A couple finds out that their house is occupied by more than just the 2 of them. The movie is filmed entirely(?) from the perspective of their own camera as they are trying to prove to themselves that the house is haunted. You like to be scared, go watch it.

I saw a commercial for Trick 'r Treat and thought it actually looked pretty good. I love Creepshow 1/2 and Tales from the Crypt...so I'm holding you personally responsible for my enjoyment, or lack thereof. You have a Kentucky Grilled Chicken avatar, so my instincts tell me to trust you on movie choices.

It's a fun movie. If you like fun movies in the vein of CS/TftC, then you should enjoy this one too.

Some of my favorite horror films:

The Thing (1982)
It doesn't hurt that the special effects stand up even today, despite being 100% practical. This is a movie about cabin fever and paranoia just as much as the monster, not to mention Kurt Russell's epic beard.

The Ring (American version)
Freakin' movie gets me every time, what with the flash shot of the dead girl in the closest. Despite this, I watch it every Halloween. Genuinely terrifying at times! The sequel is a pale immitation, and the Japanese original (Ringu) is dull and overlong. And there really aren't any special effects!

Cabin Fever
It's campy and gorey, but I still like it. I like how everything comes full circle at the end.

Silent Hill
Hey, it ain't bad when the lights are out and the sound is up (just like the games) (except Origins). Great special effects and stays true to the source material.

The 3 Extremes

This is a fucked up Asian flick that has three separate story lines all under the theme "WTF". The first two are my favorite, but the last one is still pretty WTF.

Near Dark - I wouldn't classify it as a "boo" type horror movie, but it does have its creepy moments, it is a unique twist on the vampire genre.

The Thirst - Another unique twist on vampires. Definitely worth your time, it is inspired in many ways by Near Dark.

Creepshow 2 - Has some pretty good episodes, like the Raft.

Yeah a mixture of old and new, but I enjoy them.

Niiiiceee. I remember watching those when I was a kid.. I wanna watch em again and see if they scare me now they way they did back then.

Fun fact: Back then, it made me afraid of those slimes that'd come in the $.25 vending machines because the lake ooze looked like it had the same texture as it. I wasn't afraid that it'd come to life and attack me or anything, i was just afraid that too much of it would suffocate me. Weird eh?

Yeah it stays pretty close to the short story that Stephen King wrote.

I forgot "The Mist," with Thomas "Frank Castle" Jane. Love the effects, and the underlying themes are great. The last few beasties look downright Lovecraftian.

Also, I'm pretty vampire'd out these days. I've never understood society's fascination with vampires, and the fact that you can't turn a goddamn corner these days without bumping into a vampire movie or TV show makes me cringe.

I loved vampires when i was like 5 and did for a while after but then they started getting popular with the more modern vamprie stories like Underworld, which wasn't bad. Obviously stuff like twilight put it over the top with emo love stories that only teeny boppers give a crap about. Now every time i hear about a vampire I end up grinding my teeth to keep myself from mouthing off on how sick and tired i am of it.. again.

Arachnophobia, now there is a movie that sticks with me to this day.
I constantly check the inside of a lamp shade before reaching for the the switch, and I always make sure the inside of a cereal bag is closed in the box if I'm gonna eat it.

That is definitely a movie I always recommend to anyone that wants to get creeped out by something that could really happen.

Every bush, every tree is a potential threat.  Big Bob could jump out of any one of them, including the ones in your backyard.  A great movie for the kids if you want to them stay indoors their whole lives.

I was gonna mention The Shining(it came up in a discussion this morning), but to be honest, after several attempts and chances, i just never made it through the entire movie. I either only caught it on TV, or when it was in an uncensored uninterrupted format, I just didn't have time to sit through the entire movie. Isn't it like almost 3 hours long?

That's the case for just about any book-to-movie adaptation.  But it doesn't mean the movie isn't stellar.

This is yet another case of the book being WAY better than the movie.

That is why I liked the mini series of the Shining (if that is what you are referencing). The book was a tragic downfall of a basically good man who was tempted back into drinking, who at the very end fought against his own demons to redeem himself. With Nicholoson I felt he was a bit crazy right from the start. Also I think the croquet mallet is far more interesting then the axe, it is a unique killing weapon.
Title: Re: The HALLOWEEN "Scary" Movie Watchlist

So you would recommend the 1997 TV mini series over the 1980 Horror classic?

So you would recommend the 1997 TV mini series over the 1980 Horror classic?

It doesn't have the production values of the 80s,they are really two different films. The Kubrick movie is its own unique entity, the 1997 TV series is closer to the book. One is more methodical then the other (the mini series being the methodical one).

Jacobs Ladder is a movie that I've been meaning to watch for longer than I can remember.
I never wanted to watch it on TBS/TNT/USA or whatever other channel it played on TV, it was one of those movies I was holding out to see uncensored & uninterrupted.

Drag Me To Hell

If you haven't seen this yet, then add it to your list ASAP. It's a mix of almost everything you like in horror movies. This is about a Gypsy curse, the person that is cursed and how they hope to beat or remove the curse. There are scares, laughs and moments where you find yourself trying to help the lead character even though you know she can't hear you. Brought to you by Sam Raimi, who brought you the Evil Dead and the Spiderman series, this movie is pure entertainment and should not be missed for anyone claiming to like horror movies.

Or you can watch those movies that won the "horror fest" or whatever it was called a few years ago...

I think one of them was "the boogieman" and it was horrible, and i forget what the second one was called but these two people get trapped in somehouse where they see dopplegangers of themselves that are trying to kill them... eh it was retarded and not scary in the slightest. worst peices of **** i'd ever had to pay to see, and its hard to believe those were the films that WON the film festival...ugh.

I've seen all 5 Saw movies so far, and I actually kind of like them. Saw 4 and 5 completely butcher the storyline, at least as to why Jigsaw does what he does, but at the same time, add a bit of legitimacy to the continuation of the story.

It was as if a giant living turd took a crap.

This is slightly off-topic but.. and maybe it's jsut me.. but does it seem like this year retailers are downplaying halloween?

Normally before Sept. ends you see halloween stuff up and the halloween specialty stores are usually operational by Oct 1 and no later than that but that doesnt seem to be true this year. It might just be my area but I'm curious to find out from the rest of you if its happening all over. I wouldn't be surprised considering the state of the economy.

quite the contrary over here, it seems like this year is going to be a good Halloween season, normally Halloween has been blah, but this year everyone seems excited over it.

Things like this are exactly what i'm talking about. There's a Spirit Halloween store that rents out this old closed Barns & Noble every Fall and its HUGE. They've been doing this for a few years now and they're always open by Oct 1st, but not this year. I heard there was another Spirit Halloween store opening up (this one actually in my hometown) but it'll be half the size and the opening day is TODAY. In my old experience at Hot Topic, i noticed most retailers that did any sort of halloween theme would put out stuff in late December or early Oct. but this year.. nothing.

Even on tv, i barely see any horror movies being played, the closest is ads for Saw 6. I barely see any decorations on houses or storefronts and to be honest, its bringing me down. I know Halloween isn't a huge (or even real) holiday (anymore) but I always had fun with it and looked forward to it every year. The one year I'm not really feeling it just so happens to be the year where there's nothing out there to try and get me in the spirit.

I just saw Paranormal Activity and it's one of the few movies I wouldn't mind seeing again. I don't think it was as scary as some say, but I can honestly say one seen or 2 really got my heart pumping. It's been hard for me to sleep the last 3 nights. No nightmares, just waiting to fall alseep is harder.

Success!

Romero's Dawn of the Dead / Night of the Living Dead?

^I've been meaning to add these to my collection since somehow I haven't already. I love the original Night/Dawn/Day of the dead movies and Land of the dead was pretty epic. Haven't seen the other Romero '..of the Dead' films yet.

The new Dawn of the Dead was great. the new Day of the dead however was pretty bad.

So I am watching AMC and they have been doing a Halloween Horror movie month. Tomorrow is Halloween 4 & 5. Halloween night is Night of the Living Dead.

I hardly watch TV so sorry for the lateness of this. Back to 13 ghosts.
