Title: Billy Hatcher Discussion
Post by: Mingesium on April 20, 2003, 09:28:24 AM
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg is an original game from Sonic Team. It is coming out this fall in the US.
Gameinfowire has posted magazine scans of the game.

I don't know what to think. I don't form many opinions about early games like this, because it's oh so pointless, but I will admit that my impression isn't all that good. First off, the name alone is so uninspired, I can barely stand it. And the shots themselves don't really say much. So, I'm anxious to see more because I'm a huge Sonic Team fan (since the "blast processing" days, of course), and I know they'll make something worthwhile, but it sure doesn't have HOPE written all over it. Still, very often, it's just those kinds of games that surprise you.

I think it'll be quite interesting. I love Sonic Team's original games and I'm trusting in their track record with those . Naka's focus has been on games outside of Sonic anyway since the Saturn days. I'm really anticipating E3 when this game will be shown.

Am I the only one that likes the name. Sure, it sounds silly, but I like that.

As much as I love Sonic Team I can see this game suffering from a bad camera and bad voice acting. But who knows maybe with this next gen hardware they will be able to do something about the camera.
The only reason why I say it will have a bad camera is becuase it was said by Sonic Team that this will be a high-speed platformer. And if they can't get Sonic right with the camera then I doub't this one will be any better. But then again this one may come out very good, Sonic Team learns from it and makes a very good Sonic game.

Viewtiful Joe is a simple name and that looks like a cool game.
I think this is a great idea....... when it comes to story, Yugi Naka is very good.

after seeing those screen shots, i think this game might be our substitute for banjo-kazooie. i don't know why, but when i saw those, banjo-kazooie kinda popped in my head. regardless, the game looks interesting.

As long as it's fast, has catchy music and the original Japanese voice track as an option, I'l be happy =)
Now all we need is a new NiGHTS and Burning Rangers from Sonic Team..

You know, I never really took any interest in Billy Hatcher. Until I realised that what I wanted was a Banjo-esque game on the GCN.
Billy Hatcher may not be something along the lines of Banjo, but I want a cartoony platformer to fill that void. Spyro and Crash just don't cut the mustard. The music i heard was, well, OKish, and hopefully, it isn't too much of a puzzle game (you know, roll the egg past obstacles, that's it).
I have one movie of it (courtesy of Mario), and now, all of IGN's movies are Insider, which is just bullsh*t. the screens look bloody awesome.
This game just made it onto my wanted list.

When I found you would spend most of the game pushing around a giant egg, it immediately brought back awful memories of trying to get Mario to push a giant watermelon (without breaking it of course) to the juice stand. Just thinking about it makes me wanna go throw a controller - possibly my least favorite videogame moment in 25 years.
Until I read the reviews and determine I will not have Gelato (was that the one?) Beach flashbacks, screw Billy and the egg he rode in on.

Fear not, pushing the egg is nothing like Mario pushing the watermellon. You hold onto the egg at almost all times unless you want to let go of it, or move in the opposite direction of the egg. You jump with the egg and basically become one with the egg. In the demo you push the egg to defeat enemies and break through obstacles and stuff. And ther is fruit to collect, collecting fuit build up the current egg level and when it reaches the max you can hatch it and release an animal that becomes a helper of sorts. I decided to buy the game like the day after playing the demo, (or as soon as it was available for preorder.)

well, seeing as pushing the egg is the main idea behind it, having to watch where you push and having to take in the physics of it would be hell. i think this will be like Banjo after all! Billy is Banjo, and the egg(s) are Kazooie!

also you don't keep the same egg. in the demo you had to hatch one egg in particular to complete one goal, but then need a new egg to finish the level. You can let go off your egg and grab a new one. You can also throw the egg kinda like a boomerang and it comes back. Very original concepts in a way if you ask me.

OK, promise me there will be no creatures that look like the degenerate spawn of a beachball, a duck and a clothespin there to break your egg, and I will consider it.
Man, but do I have issues with that damned Watermelon festival....

I was interested in this game when I first read about it and even more interested after playing it on the demo disc. It's definitely on my wishlist...just as long as it's not a game that can be played through in 5 hours.

Yep, thats like asking your 7 year old son about Yu-JEE-oh and being corrected like your a complete nincompoop. Oh, my bad. Not my fault the Japanese spell stuff wrong. If youre gonna ensnare the hearts and minds of American children, please use anglican spelling. Do you think they call the bear in Jellystone Forest....Yo-Gee?

Pah, I and many on this board know english. We're not going to learn up about some other language thats somewhere out in the ocean.
Anyway, back on topic, the game was pretty boring to say the least. But I'm going to give it a rent before I totally judge it.

If you read the description of it, one of the features says "Battle with up to four players in split-screen play".
Sounds cool, i cant wait to play it.

I am not aware of any spelling mistakes. Japanese is spelled phonetically when written in english characters.
Yu (you, as in the person, you.) ji (gee, as in gee willikers) Na (nah, as in: nah, that's ok) ka (first two characters in "car")
Can you please point out to me where the guy spelled his name wrong? As far as Yogi bear is concerned, it's spelled exactly like that in Japanese. Yogi.
You my friend... are in need of some maturity.

Yes, I'll finally get some more use out of my stupid crystal white GBA! Plus I'll have to go out and buy one of those GC-GBA cable things, now. When I first heard that news, I thought Sonic Team had included the console originals with Billy Hatcher. Oh well, this GBA NiGHTS may be a whole new game! IT'S LONG OVERDUE SONIC TEAM!
.... I want the theme music to this game, too. Catchy get.

i think i have heard that this game plays on the lines of how mario 64/ mario sunshine played i heard the game has 7 levels and there are objectives in each one (sort of like the stars in mario) so the developers said that the point of the game is not just to get to the end, but to get all the objectives- thats how you unlock stuff i would guess

Hey!
IGN has a Flash demo from Sega for Billy Hatcher! It's pretty cool and easy to play. More of a teaser for the game. I couldn't get past the first level cause I have sh*t all RAM -________-
