The World's Best Companies (http://bwnt.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/global_champs_2009/index.asp?chan=top+news_special+report+--+health+care+reform_special+report+-+world%27s+best+companies+2009+)

World's Best Companies 2009 The 40 names making the list, compiled by A.T. Kearney for BusinessWeek, are thriving in the recession and preparing for beyond
Any athlete will tell you that the time to train is in dismal weather, not on perfect, sun-drenched days. If you want to excel at the best of times, it seems, you need to be prepared for the worst.
Companies are little different. So as the economic outlook brightens, those that have worked hard to survive the tough times of the past year are best prepared to seize new opportunities. It is these enterprises that have risen to the top of the World's Best Companies/Global Top 40 list, compiled for BusinessWeek by management consulting firm A.T. Kearney.
What are some traits of the World's Best Companies? A commitment to innovation, diversified portfolios, aggressive expansion, strong leadership, and a clear vision for the future. "In an environment of continuous disruptive change, companies that have rigorous strategic planning initiatives that allow them to see over the horizon…are far more likely to win than those that make it up as they go along," says Paul Laudicina, chairman of A.T. Kearney.
To create the list, A.T. Kearney examined the 2,500 largest publicly listed companies in the world. Kearney's team singled out those with a minimum of $10 billion in sales in 2008, at least 25% of which came from outside the company's home region. It then ranked the companies on their sales growth and value creation—the rise of market capitalization after subtracting any increase in capital—over the past five years. This year, the list expanded to 40 companies from the 25 Kearney ranked in the past.
Thriving Industries The top 40 come from 18 countries and industries ranging from chemicals and contracting to software and shipbuilding. But three groups stand out. There are six technology and telecommunications enterprises that have tapped into continuing demand for mobile-phone service and new digital hardware and services. The eight heavy-industry and engineering outfits performed well as infrastructure spending started to bounce back. Finally, companies in sectors tied to the commodities boom of recent years have in many cases continued to prosper, though their ranks have been thinned considerably.
Japanese electronics maker Nintendo (7974.T) claims the No. 1 spot this year. Its sales have risen 36% annually over the past five years, while its value growth averaged 38%. Despite the hard times of the past year, Nintendo's continued emphasis on innovation has helped the company develop must-haves such as the DS handheld game machine and the Wii console, which outsold rival offerings from Sony (SNE) and Microsoft (MSFT). Nintendo's strategy is emblematic of the tech companies on the list. Like Nintendo, American technology giants Google (GOOG) (No. 2), Apple (AAPL) (No. 3), and Amazon.com (AMZN) (No. 17) have continued to invest heavily in innovation, commanding large market share with new products even as consumer spending and confidence have declined sharply. Telecom companies MTN (No. 7) and América Móvil (AMX) (No.18)

Most of the people here could have told you Nintendo was the world's best company before this and as far as I know none of them are even business experts.

As someone who is quite displeased with Nintendo's current practices this is not encouraging. They aren't going to change a damn thing if they're the number one company in the world. I can't think of anything worse than this for making an arrogant company think they're indestructible. With no incentive to improve things will never get better and will likely get worse.

If Ian doesn't waste time, he could trade in his Wii system and games for lots of credit towards a PSP Go and the new portable Gran Turismo title. This is an unbeatable value from a game company Ian can trust.

Come on Ian, I understand where you are coming from, but havn't we listened to Iwata and Reggie say things to the affect of "it's not enough to be on top, and once you get to the top the only way to go is down" ? Remember those comments? I'm saying I doubt Nintendo is going to just let things sit, and we know they are working on some super awesome games. Yes it's lame we had a big nintendo droubt for a super long time now, and Nintendo probably expected more 3rd parties to take charge, but with all the cool stuff coming there is no way things like this will let them sit fat and happy in their kings chair.
If anything I think this is great for the world to see, a positive take on Nintendo. Rather then the usual motion controls are crap and wii is less powerful than a watch or something.
Pluss all this extra money they are making will surely go to the development of ultra awesome games. Whether they be games like Resort or Other M doesn't matter. You can bet there will be plenty of each.

Laffo, mainstream consumer. I don't think he understood what that was at that time. Next he'll say the definition was different then and now, and how Nintendo only caters to some magickal "new" audience.

I don't see where Nintendo has been all that arrogant in their statements, Iwata has been relatively humble. Yeah they are pleased for to be so successful but you don't hear anything on par with "The next generation doesn't start until we say it does".

In an effort to not beat a dead horse...
Nintendo gives the impression of complacency right now. Now, all of us have our hopes set on all of the hidden things they have in development, which I'm sure they do have, but aside from that, they have always been a "if it's not broke don't fix it" sort of company.
I have a lot of (admittedly nitpicky) issues with the Wii as a platform which plenty of other people share. We all know the big ones... storage, friend codes, tying games to consoles instead of a personal account, etc.
I'm not sure Nintendo would classify any of those as "broke" and I worry that means they won't fix them. To some, that "ignoring of facts" could be seen as arrogance.
I have to admit that I miss the days of the third place GameCube. At least then we knew Nintendo had to shock us (which they did) and we were still getting our great first party titles.
I don't expect Wii 2 to be any more than a remote with motion sensing capabilities incrementally better than Motion+ and HD graphics. I have a hard time getting excited over an incremental console upgrade, and that's kind of sad.
Here's to hoping I'm wrong.

Well Nintendo has a pretty good holiday this year with some promising 3rd party games plus a brand new Mario platformer. We all should know that the big Nintendo teams are working on something, and in a way the fact that Nintendo can afford to take a couple steps back from rushing releases give them more time to create. The Gamecube era was one where most Nintendo games lacked polish and seemed rushed out the door, even if they were still great like SMS or Wind Waker. Nintendo is being conservative, and I'm not sure that is necessarily arrogant but being more picky about what they commit resources to.

Yeah that Nintendo is terrible with its arrogance, just look what they just recently said!
"In an industry that's certainly had its challenges this year, we like to say that the environment where PlayStation wins is best for this industry. We have a brand that can play on a worldwide basis, young and old, male and female, where our competition tends to be relegated to either select regions or to select consumer audiences. ...We don't have unlimited money, we cater to a more mass market audience. I think we're willing to take a little bit more risk than a competitor like Nintendo is and ultimately we deliver to the masses on a worldwide basis and that's what we've done for the last 15 years."
Bad Nintendo. Oh wait!

I remember when Ian wrote gigantic posts about how Nintendo should try to appeal to the mainstream consumer and stop making video games and ads where you "already have to be a gamer" to understand either.
I never did or at least never did in the manner in which you describe. And I'm pretty sure you know that too. Nintendo used to be limited to children and a minority group of gamers open-minded enough to actually give them a chance. I felt they made the best games in the world but due to their poor marketing and bizarre self-defeating incompetence there was a large section of gamers that would enjoy Nintendo games but weren't willing to even try them since Nintendo provided so many superficial reasons to turn that audience off. This was largely the Playstation audience.
I had never thought of the idea of the blue ocean audience. Hell, Nintendo are considered geniuses for targetting this new market. I wouldn't expect myself to come up with such an idea. Like the rest of the industry I only saw who was already there. I just saw tons of Playstation and Xbox owners that ignored Nintendo but I figured Nintendo could win them over if they just stepped back, acknowledged the mistakes they were making and addressed them. Hell I personally wanted these mistakes addressed since they affected me.
The most important part though was that Nintendo was to convert these people to embracing Nintendo's game design philosophies. They were not to compromise those to attract a wider audience. They were to improve their incompetence as console makers and their public image but not change their game design philosophies. But they did just that. They changed to attract the new audience instead of converting the audience.
The ad thing was just that Nintendo ads were such that one had to know the game to even get what the ad was about. It had nothing to do with being a gamer but rather being specifically a Nintendo fan. The only people who would understand the ad would be those already interested in buying the product. I actually feel Nintendo has overall done a very job of addressing this. The "Wii Would Like to Play" ads were very good to describing what Wii Sports is and why you would enjoy it and thus want to buy it.
As Wii owners we should want Nintendo to be hungry for success. Hunger drives improvement. Nintendo has become so successful so quickly with a brand new audience and their competition is so far behind that they're currently no threat. So we complain about friend codes. Has Nintendo addressed this yet? No. Do you think they'll ever? They're not worried about the competition and the new market they owe much of their success to doesn't consider friend codes to be a big issue. So why would they care? Even if they lost us we're not significant enough for it to affect them in the short term.
We see companies get complacent all the time. Atari did. Sony did. Microsoft was in the PC field make when Apple was no threat. EA shifted Madden into neutral once they got the NFL exclusive licence and NFL 2K was no longer a threat. And Nintendo themselves got lazy with success and that's why they lost the top spot with the N64. Unless all this is to you is hometeam rah-rah bragging rights you should never want Nintendo to seem untouchable. No company should be so dominant.
Title: Re: Wii are... uhhh, Nintendo is #1! Earns title of World's Best Company!
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on October 06, 2009, 07:15:08 PM
Nintendo didn't get lazy with the N64, they stuck with carts. For one, they produced their own carts at made a profit on them, and two, they had much higher faster times and served the needs of the types of games they wanted to make.
Some of Nintendo's best games came out of the N64 era. There was no sign of laziness.
As far as Friend codes, as much as we would all like to see this inconvenience addressed, Nintendo kinda designed their system in a way that they can't just erase everything and start over. Some companies have done what they can to bypass it, but its kinda programed into the system so Nintendo is gonna ride it out till the next system. If they don't fix it in Wii2 then we can all bitch and complain about it, but I'm not sure there much Nintendo can do but stay the course at this point.

Google's dominant, but do you have a problem going there everyday?
Can we just step back for a second and realize how impeccable Iwata has ran his company since he became president? The best company in the world? Wow; just wow.
Ian, I largely understand you, but your looking at this in the wrong light. You've...bitched before about how the resources of Nintendo have been split largely towards the casual side. This was true. Nintendo had to bring in their new audience at all cost, even the cost of some of us. Well, as the most dominant company in the world and the video game industry, Nintendo now has the ability to experiment and stretch their resources; take risks and improve on themselves.

I agree with EasyCure, Pale. He came into this thread specifically to ignite this very argument. One that even you are tired of. And your response to this is that the people of this forum have to be equivalent trolls in return? Quoi?
What's the point of having moderators if they don't "moderate?" All this D_Average guy has BEEN to this forum is a caustic agitator and a pain in the ass. How many people does he have to insult before he gets banned? (Fun fact: He insulted everybody on this forum in that talkback thread. That includes you, Pale) How many topics does he get to crash? I really didn't want to drag this out in the open, but I've asked Lindy for help on this issue, TWICE, about people he was personally insulting, including myself, and all he got both times was this limp "warning." If I was still a mod, he would have been banned a long time ago.
And EasyCure is right again that people have been banned for a whole lot less before. When did we become so soft on trolls?
EDIT: Also, by "dishing it out and taking it" do you mean we are to claim D_Average has sex with his PS3? Do we rearrange his name to make some sort of crude insult and repeat it over and over? Do we take those same insults and put them as our signatures?
Because he's done all those things. And most of the forum members here didn't respond in kind because they were sure such asshattery would get him banned. Since he hasn't, does that mean such behavior is now condoned at NWR? I certainly hope not.

Continue down this road, and you'll end up with a strong case of objectum sexuality like that hack Sean Malstrom and Jack from Infendo. Hell, you probably are Jack and Sean.
D_Average to me. Pathetic Media thread, General Gaming. You say that I'm basically about to start fucking my Wii, for no other reason than that I disagreed with you.

Way to strawman my argument guys. Is this what you must do to defend your lover? Pathetic.
D_Average to everybody. Because they all disagreed with him.
YOU started this crap, sir. And nobody cares if you own a Wii or not, you're still a troll. Is it really worth being civil to this asshole, if he just flaunts the rules he breaks over and over? Seriously. Can we get a mod up in this piece? Can some rules start applying to people? What's the point of being civil if even trolls never get punished?

Make a new thread for this please. I promise I'll read it.
Actually make it in the Funhouse and theme it after Phoenix Wright. We will hold Funhouse court and maybe a mod will take the Funhouse courts recommendation under consideration.

I think he already ruined it just by posting in it. Ian has issues with Nintendo, but he doesn't go around insulting everybody on the forum for disagreeing with him. He posted a succinct and well-written post that had to do with the topic and my post, I actually highly appreciate Ian these days, if only because I've been exposed to a hellish alternative in the form of D_Average.
On the other hand. D_Average makes grade school insults and says people who disagree with him **** their Wiis and jerk off to pictures of Miyamoto. If that **** doesn't get banned, what will?

trick him into a political discussion on religion, or a religious discussion on politics. That should get the results you're looking for.

Hey, sexual orientation is waaay against the rules, but he was all too willing to discuss that with everybody in that thread.
I haven't even seen this guy get "warned" yet. Is this our model poster now? Are we all supposed to be like him now, crashing threads and questioning everybody's sexual preferences?

His debating may leave something to be desired, and he may be a little annoying at times, but I don't remember ever disliking anyone to the point of wishing them banned.
I'm sure Pale is aware of whatever it is that D_Avg. is doing and whatever is being discussed behind the scenes may be related, but this isn't the thread for that discussion.
Seriously, we can make a game out of it in the Funhouse. Present your case, you already seem to have all your evidence ready.

His "debating" includes personal insults of a sexual nature against anybody who is on the other side. Yeah I dislike him, because: 1) He's personally insulted me and several others. 2) He's broken the rules repeatedly, particularly the one about sexual orientation. I want him banned because of that, not just because I dislike him.
I'm sorry he followed me into the thread BnM, but he was going to post in here anyway.

Am I the only one that sees the irony of his SN and some of these statements about him?

I made a thread in The Funhouse for this (Deg VS D_Avg.). I'm sure it will attract mod attention at some point.

D_Average: Stop trolling or you'll be banned. You're trying really hard. Deg: Relax.
People just need to step away from the keyboard in this forum. If you don't want a massive flame war, don't get goaded into one. If you're in one, don't flame the fire. It's as simple as that.

Well that was quick. Court had not officially started yet.

My esteemed judges at the TACO SUPREME COURT have ruled that Nintendo is the World's Best Company.
They sell so many amazing products, it doesn't matter that they brick a few.
People who buy Nintendo systems to just play Mario aren't Nintendo fans and certainly are not part of the audience that's kept the company afloat through the decades. But Nintendo manages to sell to these suckers anyway. That's how Best of a company they are.
Now You're Playing with Power!
Now You're Playing with Power! Super Power!
Play it Loud!
The Nintendo Difference
Wii Would Like to Play!
Mainstream consumers have voted with their dollars, and the market belongs to Nintendo. What does the market consist of? Wii This and Wii That. Where are the non-kiddeh non-casual games? THERE AREN'T ANY, cuz Nintendo only makes games for the dominant audience in the industry now -- the same people who have no realization or appreciation for Ocarina of Time, F-Zero, Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye, or StarFox -- people who only know Bowling Can Break Their TV and Hula Hooping on a Bathroom Scale is Fun.
Get N or Get Out! Got nothing to play on your Wii? Trade it in to GameStop! Abandon ship! It's time you grew up and ditched these childish hobbies! Just remember in 10 years or so you'll end up getting the latest version of Wii Fit, finally becoming part of the source of your original problem: your support for Nintendo was insignificant compared to their REAL customers, and Nintendo actually makes games for everyone but you.
I've taken the recession into consideration, so I thought it was best to begin spreading Holiday Cheer early, just like Amerikan retailers.
