Title: NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA, HEY HEY HEY, GOODBYE!!!
Post by: vudu on August 18, 2009, 02:24:37 PM
The PS3 went from being easily the least appealing console to me to the most in the last few years.  Originally it seemed all the good games were also available on the Xbox 360 but now I would say that it has the exclusives that interest me more.  What was holding me back was the price.  It was just too much money.  Now it's affordable, so I'll get it.

The Wii is not cutting it for me, plain and simple.  There are games on the horizon I'm looking forward to but they're too infrequent.  The third party support is crap and is not going to change.  Nintendo's first party releases are now split between the new market and the old so from my perspective their output is decreased.  And realistically I just don't seem to be a priority to them.  They don't care if I'm satisfied or not.  They're making money hand over fist so they're not going to change anything.  I feel like they're taking my support for granted.  But I'll still have my Wii and will buy the titles that do interest me.  Next gen is up in the air though.  Right now I'd say they've lost me for next gen if they maintain the status quo.

The question for me now is what PS3 game will I get first?

I feel like Ian finally jumping ship is in direct relation to my post in the Sales Thread. (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=18481.msg542775#msg542775)

Should we celebrate?

I'm in the same boat as The Perm, but I'd rather have a 360.

But according to a Game Informer survey Xbox360 has a 54% failure rate amongst it's readers. 46% of that 54% have had to get it repaired more than once. That means that 21% of Xbox360 gamers that read Game Informer have to get their Xboxes repaired multiple times.

So I hope you don't start reading Game Informer.

At the risk of being yelled at for sticking up for Ian again...

He doesn't have to "jump ship" to get a ps3.  He could just, you know, keep both.  Then he'd still get his Nintendo games that he likes and get some PS3 titles to fill in the gaps.

But yeah, I know this thread is more fun if you pretend like he's jumping ship.

Ian, if you read this, you'll have to put me on your friends list.  I'm PaleZer0. =P We can LBP some time. (and, yes, that's the game you should get first.)

Pale's wrong.  He's just wrong.

That said, I still don't see what the fun is at the "Attack Ian Party" that's always going on.  So he wants to play more games and more types of games than what's on the Wii...

Doesn't mean he's going to be lame like Pale and act like LBP was something decent, and not ridiculously overhyped and completely hindered by it's platforming engine.  He'll probably pick up a good game, instead.

If Ian trades-in his Wii collection and system, he can get EVEN MORE value towards the purchase of his PS3.

Hell no.  I would only do that if I was so broke that I couldn't afford to feed myself.  Since that would require me to lose my job, blow my savings, lose all my friends and ruin my relationship with my family members so severly that wouldn't help me out that's probably not going to happen unless I start doing heroin or something.

I'm not disappointed with my Wii collection but rather that the collection is so small.  While disappointed with it I don't regret the purchase.  Super Mario Galaxy alone is worth owning a Wii for.

Interesting. And I agree with him on that point. My Wii collection is small also. Now, it is true that I could probably add 10 games to it easily, but I'm in no hurry to go and pay $50.00 for each one. Some I don't even think are worth 50 dollars.

Here's the problem with this generation. It isn't the high prices or the hardcore/softcore debate or developers doing what they can to lose money. It's that the "console" to own, isn't actually a console. If you go by the generations, "THE" consoles to own were the NES, SNES (some may argue this and that would be foolish), the PS1, the PS2. Those were the consoles of choose, the market leaders. If you had to choose a console, that was what you were supposed to choice. This generation, it is not the PS3 or the XBox 360 or the Wii that should be the console of choice. It's the DS.

The DS is "THE" console to own this generation. The games and genres it supports are phenomanal. There's no reason for anyone to not have a 30 game library for this system. It straddles the line of hardcore and non-gamer perfectly and is able to fuse the two with many different games as well. The Nintendo franchises on are it pretty solid. First Party gaming is doing well. Third party gaming support is phenomanal as well. Look at what Square has provided the system. No other console this generation has gotten such love from Square as the DS has. For those who find that important. The price of games is excellant making it easy to pick up many titles for it. This generation belongs to the DS. If you own the actual consoles, chances are you are never going to be satisfied. But with a DS, you can find more than enough games to keep you happy and there are always big releases coming.

The other issue is we have the idea that gaming should be sitting, facing a tv with a console. For the longest time, this is where you got the deeper experiences, where the big money was spent and where you got the best quality games. When it came to showing off amazing graphics, it wasn't with handhelds. It was with the consoles. And I'll admit, the DS obviously still lags behind in visuals. But with it and the PSP, this gap is getting closed. When you look at some of the impressive FMV some developers have put into DS games, it helps bridge that gap some more. But people keep focusing on the TV consoles. It's all about having the ultimate systems. Hi-Def TV, Surround Sound, Blu-Ray and a gaming system to match. So, people keep focusing on the 3 different TV consoles and can't find any one perfect console. The business has changed. Just as laptops have now started selling more than desktops, the handhelds are starting to show some muscle over their console counterparts.

But all that is just my view and may amount to nothing more than a hill of beans.

I'll actually be sad to know that Ian will post here less and less because he's off exploring what the PS3 has to offer. Note that i said i'll be sad to KNOW he's gone.. if this thread didn't come up, it wouldn't matter to me at all. Hell i don't even remember the last time i read an Iansane post, i usually glance over them anyway ;P

Good for him though, if he wants to get satisfaction elsewhere, so be it. By the end of this generation he'll be on some PSfanboy forum probably making the same old arguments, but with a new coat of paint. Personally I feel as if Ian is one of these lapsed gamers thats doesn't realize he's a lapsed gamer.. He's not burnt out on Nintendo and what they're doing, just games in general because he's done it all to death before. Now that Nintendo is doing things differently, something he's NOT used to, he's afraid of the change and puts up this wall where what they are doing is not for him. He thinks he can find satisfaction somewhere else because they'll be able to deliver what he wants/needs as a gamer but.. In time he'll realize nothings changed, just the resolutions a little higher.

In time he'll realize he either cherishes gaming truley and isn't afraid to try new things and embrace change, or that it was all a hobby he got burnt out on and not a passion, then give it up for good. Either way, good luck to him.

==============

On an unrelated note, while i don't agree with Khush entirely about the DS (only because I've never been much of a portable guy myself and have less than 10 DS games, though would like a few more)..

I DO think he has a point and his opinion is worth much more than a hill of beans. Basically, your thoughts of how the gap is closing between console and portable gaming intrigue me because lately, more and more do i wish the two were interchangeable. What i wouldn't give to be able to take my current Wii library on the go (and not have to rebuy ports or spin-offs ala PS2/PSP).. Ah, but this is a discussion that would deserve its own thread, so I'll stop here.

^I'm definitely a lapsed gamer, especially in the terms that EasyCure spells it out with, minus the fear of the new.  I'm a bit tired of everything that doesn't involve rolling things up into balls, then catching them on fire.  And maybe Starcraft.  A Starcraft binge every once in a while is probably a very healthy thing.

I was on edge of becoming a lapsed gamer until Wii came along to be honest. By the end of the GC era life got in the way of gaming and the few times I went back, it felt like the magic wasn't there anymore. It wasnt like being a kid and rushing home after school on friday night knowing you were gonna sit in front of the NES and beat the **** outta SMB3.. ya know?

All of a sudden the promise of Wii had me excited once more, the magic was back. Sure some of that promise hasn't been delivered, YET, but i'm still hopeful. Even the DS got me excited, though as i mentioned I've never been much of a portable gamer. The games i do have for that system I love, and just hearing about unique games on the platform make me happy as a gamer, because imagination is still alive and well in developers.

Basically, the Wii is helping fight the war against stagnant gaming and despite its flaws i'm thankfull for it as non-elitist gamer. Yes, I said THANKFULL. Before 2006 people started acting like a video game wasn't worth **** if it wasn't a GTA clone, that was the first wave of attack. Then FPS games littered with bald space marines came in for the second wave, followed by the onslaught of hi-res graphics... I felt like I was watching gaming die.. my favorite hobby, and also a passion, was whithering away like a wilted flower.. almost lifeless... slowly turning brown.

and as Pro would say, the tides of the blue ocean washed away the old crops, making the land fertile again for the seeds of change to be sewn.

Unfortunately all you can trade it in for right now is a Wii or a PS3slim. There is no telling if the program is still gonna be active or funded by Sept. 1st & they don't give rain checks, so you better trade in while you can.

If you go by the generations, "THE" consoles to own were the NES, SNES (some may argue this and that would be foolish), the PS1, the PS2. Those were the consoles of choose, the market leaders. If you had to choose a console, that was what you were supposed to choice.
I absolutely could NOT disagree with this more.

You normally do. :P
Since when have I ever agreed with that statement?

Alright. What is wrong with that statement?

Just because a system sells the most doesn't mean it has the best games for everyone.
I believe that if one can get only one system then they should do some research and see which one offers the most games which appeal to them. In my case, despite the huge library of games for the PlayStation, there are far more games on the Nintendo 64 which I like. Same for PS2 vs. GameCube.

In the case of SNES vs. Genesis, if I went by your logic of sales = best, then it would depend on which region you live in. In Europe and Australia, the Genesis (known there as the Mega Drive) sold far better than the Super NES did, which would make it "THE" system to own.

That basically describes me as well: I was prepared to never own another console since I had grown so bored with gaming.
