This is the first title to really focus on the wii version from all the impressions I have read. I have III and Metallica.. and I am not sure why people are so fired up about the Wii version? What makes it superior to the others and while it is great with all the wii love, is there really that big a difference to the end consumer?

The track exporting, plus the chance to get a FREE copy of GH:VH made this new sequel much more appealing to me...

Some of this sounds too good to be true. We need official word from Vicarious Visions that they'll have these features working in the Wii version.

I have this strange feeling that the free GH: Van Halen means you have to pre-order the whole she-bang with all the instrument controllers I would have no need for. That's the version they always push. They would likely not be so generous to give away an ENTIRE GAME with just a disc-only copy of GH5. And if it is America only with no option in Canada well that would be useless to me anyway.
Importing tracks is of no concern for me. Swapping discs isn't some huge chore so I don't care. Having the option is nice but if they didn't have it I wouldn't even notice.
I look though the list of songs and I see some great tracks I want to have. But I also see tons of **** that I NEVER would want to play in a million years. My friends and I found World Tour to be somewhat frustrating because in the story mode we would sometimes have to go through up to three tracks in a row of what we considered to be pure garbage. You start making deals with your friends so you get to sing the song you really want in exchange for singing Korn.
What I want is complete control over what songs I get. Instead of a fixed setlist the game should come with 85 credits to use in the track store. And then there are no sequels unless they add a new instrument or something and all songs are available to buy for all versions of the game (it just disables any new features that don't apply). This is what I want and this is what I'll buy. I'll only make an exception if I find a cheap used copy of the game. Or since I already have one game if they made ALL the songs on this one downloadable then that would be okay too.
You know what this is? It's the same **** as with the music industry where they clinged to CDs and were dragged kicking and screaming into providing retail song downloads. Only imagine instead of CDs by artist you could only buy boxed sets of various artists.

Nope, just the standard disc only game will do for the free copy of GHVH.

This has changed since GH: Metallica. You can freely choose which songs from each set you want to play first. Also, you're no longer forced to play all of the songs. Opening up a new gig depends on the number of stars you have earned, not songs played.

I own Metallica. Which I want to export as well.
Also, GH5 has done away friend codes, it uses your wii console number instead.

The Conduit can do that too. The tracklist for GH5 is garbage - but all the new-to-Wii-goodness that they're including is great. It seems they decided to just pick a track off of Pinkerton for the sake of...picking a track off of Pinkerton, and chose easily the worst song (Why Bother?). Not that it's a terrible song, but it's the worst song on the album.

I was only semi-interested in the 2 games (because I am only interested in some songs on each), but if I can get both Guitar Hero 5 and Guitar Hero: Van Halen for the price of 1 I might get them.

2 Minutes To Midnight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtjHlCC6yBA
Done With Everything, Die For Nothing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFFkwHVFeqk
The models and lighting look great, several steps above the ugliness that was GH3/GHWT. But dammit, those "dead eyes" the characters have really throw things off.

Exactly. That'd be good enough for me but all the extra bells and whistles really makes the purchase worth it in my opinion.

Really? I think it's the best on disc-setlist we've had in a music game to date. It's a music lover's dream IMO.
The Beatles: Rock Band....

As much as I want to support awesome effort from VV, Rock Band 2 pretty much seals the deal as the only band based music game I ever need with an exception of The Beatles: Rock Band.

I'm a music lover, and I think the tracklist sucks. Rockband 1 and 2 were much better. Honestly I think it's more of a tracklist meant to appeal to people who pretend like they like a lot of different types of music - I'm not accusing anyone who likes the listed songs of being that type of person, I just think that's who they are going after. It's the German version of "Du Hast", which is awesome, mainly because you have to speak German, and also because it actually means "You Have", and not "You Hate" like the English version was changed to. There are a few standout tracks, but really it's mostly pure crap that won't be fun to play with other people.

While that is true, I've always felt that Du Hust was one of Rammstein's worst songs. It's downright boring to listen to.

Beck - "Gamma Ray" Billy Idol - "Dancing with Myself" Gorillaz - "Feel Good Inc." King Crimson - "21st Century Schizoid Man" Queen & David Bowie - "Under Pressure"
Wow, they actually bothered to get music worth listening to outside of a rhythm game!

I'm a music lover, and i think the tracklist sucks, but then again so did Rock Band 2's. Only reason i bought it was because Circuit City was liquidating assets and I was able to get it for dirt cheap.

Du Hast is a terrible song, don't get me wrong. I just think it's awesome that it's the German version. Most of Rammstein's songs are pretty basic, if I had to choose one for the game, I'd choose Feuer Frei. XXX was a terrible movie, but the Rammstein concert intro was pretty badass.

Feuer Frei would probably be one of the more obvious choices. I was always quite fond of Du Riechst So Gut myself.

Although, I'd settle for anything off of Herzeleid.

When I saw the soundtrack for Brutal Legend, I thought to myself no wonder why Activision was trying to block that game since Brutal Legend's soundtrack is leagues better than GH5's soundtrack. :P
If you want to look at the 108 song soundtrack. (http://kotaku.com/5333045/ea-denmark-drops-brutal-legends-complete-soundtrack)

It's funny cuz i still don't think theres a problem with GH's note charts. My beef is with everyones precious RB note charts because they're a little TOO simple for my taste dammit. I can play some of these songs on an actual guitar so when i know i should be strumming a chord and instead strumming a single note, it just irritates me. There's other things too, like how even on expert when a chord does show up its rarely ever a proper 3 note power chord and instead just 2.
Guess i'm just nitpicking though becuase i'm used to the real thing and these plastic instruments will never be as intricate.

I have to agree with EasyCure on this one. It's a game, for one, it's not going to be like the real thing... But Rock Band's timing seems off to me (not talking about calibration issues, either), and the charts seem bland, like Harmonix wanted to make them as easy as possible for whatever difficulty level the song is on.
Yeah, GH will have the lead guitar playing parts from the rhythm, and yeah, sometimes you'll be playing an extra note to try to capture the feel of a sound effect, rather than be accurate, but that's more fun, in most cases, to me.
Hence, I stick with GH.
Though apparently, through hacking, it's possible to export RB, GH3, GH2, GH1, GH Aerosmith, and GH Rock the 80's songs onto Rock Band 2... I'm considering trying that and picking up RB 2, but that would really depend on if the export somehow included at least the drum part. Of course, then I'd be conflicted because I was planning on selling my RB gear, and apparently, it's tough to play RB 2 on the GH drums.

Post by: BranDonk Kong on August 17, 2009, 10:18:55 PM
You can't add the drum tracks from GH1, GH2, GH3, Aerosmith, or the 80s - technically you could add the charts and play along, only the guitar and bass are isolated in those games. You should ditch the GH drums and get the Rock Band 2 drums with the cymbals. Sure you lose a note in GHWT, etc, but you can use the pads as toms and the cymbals as cymbals during fills and freestyle mode (does this exist on the Wii version?) on Rock Band 2, giving you 8 unique sounds.

That's the other thing actually, I don't mind that because to me its actually MORE realistic, because its what I'm used to. Though i've been in a few simple bands before, most of the time I play guitar I'm playing by myself so when i play along with a song I switch from rythm to lead accordingly and when I have to I'll play keyboard parts on my guitar (if there's no guitar part at the time, obviously).
Thats why when this argument came up about having to play the keyboard part for The Killer's "When You Were Young" in GH3, I just ignored it. If I was at home playing along to the song, i'd play those keyboard parts on my real guitar.. so whats the big deal?

Good to know, a lot of my favorite tracks are on that Day 1 list! Question though.. Dumb question though.. How does the exporting work on Wii? I'm assuming it just moves everything to an SD card, I just want the confirmation so i can clear out my SD card or possibly just get a new one now.

So i bought GH5 two days ago just to get the free GH:Van Halen they were offering, even though I only know a handful of van halen songs and my interest in any sort of rhythm game has dwindeled ever since i purchased Rune Factory Frontier.
I haven't even popped the disc in, the only reason I opened the game was to get the code on the back of the manual neccesary for the free game redemtion. I'll give it a shot this weekend and give impressions... but how different can it be?
Has anyone else purchased GH5 at all?

No idea but i'm almost positive I only paid the usual $49.99 + tax here. Too bad i don't have my reciept to confirm since i had to ship it off to activision in order to get the free copy of GH:VH haha
I've been meaning to write a mini review of this game but haven't gotten around to it. I haven't tried the new "party play" mode which seems to be the big feature they're touting, but so what? It's like playing quickplay and then having someone join me mid-song. If it works, it works, big whoop.
I also haven't been able to transfer any songs from GH:WT into GH5 because my gf has my memory card at the moment, so thats another key feature i can't talk about.
What I can say is that the set-list is VERY diverse, whether thats a good or bad thing all depends on your taste in music as well as how open you are to trying out different music you might not be in to. The graphics didn't seem to be upgraded much over WT (on wii anyway) BUT... The unlockable Artists like Santana, Cash and Cobain all have amazing character models. Perhaps its just the fact that they're more realistic looking, proportionaly wise, vs the standard GH MEGA-JAW ugo's. It's been awhile since i've played WT but I really do feel that GH5's secret characters look much MUCH better, i'm talking uncanny-alley stuff.
One of my favorite new features (single player feature) is how when playing the career mode and selecting your next track, with the press of a button you can switch from guitar to bass or back instantly. This helps with the new challanges present for each song, which is another neat little feature. Like Rock Band 2, you'll have chances to win sponsorhips to unlock new gear, but things play a little differently in this game. Each song has a unique goal, so it does add some replayability for the completionist type like myself.
some of the challenges are as simple as scoring over a certain amount of points, but you also have ones that ask you to hit a certain note-streak, or even hit as many bass notes as you can with an up-stroke. Because challenges are presented before you accept the song, this is where the guitar/bass switch comes handy. oh, and of course there are challenges for drums and vocals too.
The other nice feature is how you can play with any combination of instruments. Nothing major, just a nice feature to haves to have so there's no more arguing over who has to be stuck playing bass (although there are some really good songs on the set list with fun basslines, and the "open note" makes its return in this game too).
Going back to the unlockable characters.. there's another neat feature here, in which you don't just unlock one of the announced artist, but an artist "pack". For instance, playing through the career mode I worked my way up to whichever venue has Ring of Fire in it. To my surprise, instead of my custom character taking stage, I was playing as a Tenessee Three look alike aka Cash's back-up band! The same went for Shirley Manson, Santana, that dude from Muse, and yes even Nirvana.
