Nintendo’s Patented Horseback Riding Wii Controller (http://www.siliconera.com/2009/08/10/nintendos-patented-horseback-riding-controller/)

If you thought the Wii Balance Board was off the beaten path wait until you see Nintendo’s Wii Horseback Riding Saddle. We’re not kidding about this.

The inflatable seat has a pocket for the Wii remote, which is used to sense movement via the accelerometers. Players hold the nunchuck to simulate holding the reins or, as the Nintendo patent describes, “a raised hand for balance as in Bronco riding, a lasso, a sword or other weapon, etc.”
more pics at the link above

This better not be included as an option in the New Zelda for some immersive Epona horseback riding battle sequence.

This instead better be a swap with Ubisoft for them to use in their Horsez game in exchange for the wiicamera they helped develop.

LET'S SQUAT, LET'S-SQUAT

Future squatting game.

That Vitality Sensor will measure your excitement while you sit your Wii Remote in the wrong direction.

Oh lord...

Imagine a game that uses Balance Board, MotionPlus, Vitality Sensor, Nunchuck AND this contraption...

IMMERSIVE GAMING FTW!

But seriously, this is silly right here.

This is probably one that won't see the light of day.  There are several things Nintendo has patented and never released, like that Star shaped controller or the N64 Gyro Pak.

God, I'm a terrible Nintendo buff without knowing what these things are. The only patent I remember being shown (and never coming to fruitation) was that Nintendo cell phone.

This seems like a terrible idea, especially considering it doesn't seem much different than what the Balance Board can do.

This obviously is just one of the many ideas Nintendo was spitballing and patented.

If for some reason this is in demand enough for a release it is going to be Japan only.  Aren't jockey games very popular in the land of the rising sun?  This would make the ultimate jockey simiuation at home.

Are jockey games still popular there or have they gone out of style?

I figure at some point Nintendo is going to push all these accessories to the point that one of them is going to be a huge DUD and cost them a fair chunk of money.  Maybe it's this or the vitality sensor or something else but eventually "accessory-mania" is going to die.  It's just so blantantly part of their business model now.  You can tell when they design games that finding a way to include some sort of stupid extra thingamagig is a priority.

I think this horse thing is such a DUMB idea.  But "that's stupid" isn't enough to say for certain that something won't be done.  You never know.

Since Zelda is likely to use Motion+ I doubt it would use this as well.  Or at the very least it probably wouldn't REQUIRE the use of multiple accessories.  Nintendo is iffy about using Motion+ in it, likely because they're afraid of limiting a huge potential hit like Zelda to only a fraction of the Wii audience.  That's why they took a wait-and-see approach.  To require the use of a stupid horse controller AND Motion+ and who-knows-what-else would limit things even more.  Nintendo wants Zelda to be a big hit.

Or they'll just include the accessory so there is no possibility of that.

Well that's what *I* would assume but at E3 Nintendo was "golly gee I don't know if we should use Motion+ or not" so they must have some reason for being cautious about it.

They already confirmed the Zelda will use M+. Their "wait and see" approach would have only been a concern if Wii Sports Resort bombed...but it didn't so...

It'll detect when someones playing a MATOOR game with lots of blood and gore and cracks a smile, that way their local authorities are dispatched to their home and sony will not be held responsible for the next big school shooting because they took steps to prevent it. Bravo i say.

Title: WiiPlay Football!!!? Nintendo files Football controller patent.
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on August 25, 2009, 04:05:09 AM
As ridiculous as this sounds, and looks.... it does actually look like a functional way to play with only one hand.
Wiimote w/ M+ & Nunchuck controlled comfortably all in one hand? I wouldn't have even thought of it. I wonder what Nintendo has planned for it though
Quote from: Siliconera
Behind the scenes Nintendo is working on even more Wii accessories and their football controller has the potential to be a mass market hit.

A recently filed patent application by Howard Cheng, Vice President of Research and Development at Nintendo of America, reveals a plan for a soft football controller for use with the Wii and the remote.

So how does it work? Nintendo gives some examples.

Throwing – Players firmly strap their hands to the ball and make a throwing motion. The pitch angle and force of the throw determines the trajectory arc of the throw. Side to side motion determines the yaw angle. Pressing buttons on the Wii remote can adjust other options.

Running – The football controller sense body motion, shifting left and right to dodge tacklers and even jumping motions by raising the ball. Running speed is determined by players making a jogging motion.

Here’s a more detailed look at the system.

At the end of the document Nintendo presents solutions to enhance the football controller. Figure 4 shows the basic controller. Figure 8 adds the nunchuk, which can improve the controller’s sensitivity. Figure 9A includes Wii Motion Plus to detect orientation and improve ability to recognize actions.

Realistically this could simulated by duct taping the Wii controller to a Nerf football.

I like how in the drawing the guy is doing a stiff arm when there would be absolutely no way for that the game to detect you doing that.  But I guess the game is just so damn immersive that you'll do that instinctively until the game misinterprets your long bomb to the end zone as "spike the ball into the ground as hard as you can".

How the hell do you run with the ball unless you happen to have a 100 yard long living room?  Well you move with the joystick, Ian!  Oh so you're basically playing the same Madden you always have but you replace the throw button with waggle and add that extra risk of throwing your controller through your TV screen!  YEAH!!!
